I'm just getting into carving. I cut up and pulled out a dead bush stump, and am looking for tips and advice. I may just have to try making these little people. They are adorable. After I see if I can turn a hollow piece of the stump into a night light. 😀

Hi Tia! She said she has carved over 2,000 of these little people, so I imagine she has developed some muscles specific to carving. Soaking the wood in water before you carve it helps soften the wood also. Also, make sure your knife is razor sharp so that it shaves the hair on your arm. These guys sure are a lot of fun to carve and make great gifts. Take care.
Hi, Sharon There are wood carving blades out there for X-ACTO knives. They're less expensive than the knife you're using. I'm new to this hobby and I'd like to know if I can use an X-ACTO as an alternative to using your knife. Also regarding the wood being used to carve these guys, I thought an alternative to basswood would be something like pine or perhaps balsa wood. Is there anything wrong with these alternatives?
Basswood is really the premium stuff to use. Pine tends to split easily and balsa is just so fragile and has a fuzzy surface. You can see how nicely the basswood holds detail with a sharp knife in this video. I suggest Heinecke Wood products for good prices (I'm not affiliated with them). A search is your friend. That said, I really like to whittle found wood - branches, random bits of pruned wood, that sort of thing. If you want consistent properties, get basswood, if you want character in your material, get free wood. I have never been happy carving pine. But that may just be me. Regarding knives, you can certainly carve with X Acto blades, but you will eventually want to move up to a better quality knife. The round handles are not as controllable as a proper carving knife. If you already have the XActo, use that. If not, look into a decent pocket knife. Victorinox makes a 2 blade one called the Pocket Pal that is great for whittling. It isn't expensive - under $20. The Tinker might be even cheaper and it comes with a can opener. You want a handle you can control, a blade that is thin enough to be really sharp without being too long, and a look that says "not a weapon" to anyone who sees it. You will want proper sharpening tools, too. A fine grit hone and a small strop with compound will be all most people ever need.
An X-ACTO is not designed for this type of work. You can make it work probably. It will take longer and you will break blades. A good properly sharpened small blade pocket knife would be much better. But then again, the best carving knives in the world are only $30.
I'm assuming you don't expect me to use the same knife you have. I use a carving knife, a gouge, a chisel, and a V carving tool all made by Flexcut along with a Dremel tool and an occasional X-ACTO knife. I also have the Flexcut sharpening strop

Is it wrong for me to share a video showing crochet stitches my mother taught me? It is also quite posible that there are many people who think alike in this world. How can you be certain she didnt do these first, or learn the technique from one of her grandparents or something. Besides, Price uses a different technique. He cuts a silhouette of the subject then defines it. Ive seen these same figures she is carving EVERYWHERE. I really dont think they should be labled exclusive. I also dont know why you have complimented this carver in the past if you felt this way.

It looks very similar to basswood. Basswood is a very soft wood and easy to carve.

I love you video's and I have recently purchased some carving knives, gouges ect. What is the best stone to use in sharpening the carving knives?
Just search google or youtube for sharpening techniques. Iuse both diamond and ceramic.
