    Absolutely unhistorical and low-budget, and yet I still always enjoy this scene! It's just fun getting to see Britannic 'in action' as it were, and some of the shots are really nicely composed - the torpedo cutting through the water and barely missing her bow, and that almost painterly shot of Britannic and Victoria as the depth-charges sink the sub, the torpedo trails bold in the water.

    "It is unsinkable!"
    I can't believe they actually put that line in! There's NO WAY anyone aboard Britannic would have said something like that after what happened to her sister! It would be like if someone on the One World Trade Center said, in all seriousness during a crisis, "this building is airplane-proof!"

      The titanic sank because of a fire in the building of the titanic so it was meant to be built to be unsinkable but it got damaged which made it really easy to sink with damage from a fire in the building of the titanic, the Britannic probably did not have a fire so the ship would have been unsinkable except there was a mine stronger than the Britannic which caused the Britannic to sink. The titanic would not have sank from that iceberg if it wasn't for that fire.

    • @t3llur1de
      @t3llur1de 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @COOLGAMINGSHOW - The World Trade Center impact fires didn't melt the Twin Towers' structural steel; they weakened the steel across multiple floors until it could no longer support the structure above. When the steel lost its tensile strength, it collapsed beneath the weight of the overburden. There was more overburden to the South Tower impact, which is why it collapsed first though it wasn't struck first.

      After what happened to Titanic, never have they ever claimed that the Britannic was unsinkable. The White Star Line didn't want customers/passengers being afraid of the ship. All they did to the ship was add more compartments, with compartment seals over the top, and the bulkheads being extended farther up, and the main hull was doubled to be able to sustain more damage than the Titanic did, and they added more lifeboats to ensure the safety of the ship

    Britannic was not sunk by a U-Boat but by a naval mine (which of course cannot distinguish a hospital ship from any other). We all don't know what really happened to the ship. the most likely cause was either a mine, a torpedo, or an empty compartment full of coal dust, which is highly flammable. Yes, there were reports of a lot of subs in the Mediterranean Sea, but there also reports of many mines being found. The shop also had an empty compartment full of coal dust, and even a little bit of a breeze can cause an explosion more powerful than nitroglycerin. So, it's either one of the 3, which is still being debated by historians

  • @davinp

    U-73 has the distinction of being responsible for sinking the largest ship sunk in World War I.
    The U boat had laid mines it is believed anything up to a week before Britannic came into contact with one.
    Britannic very likely would have survived the mine damage if it hadn’t been for the unfortunate situation of the nurses leaving the port holes open to ‘Air’ the ship.
    The additional safety features built into the ship after the Titanic disaster were simply bypassed by this fateful decision.

  • @cutercills9x9creates65

    I heard that the wreck today is a recreational park for tactical divers. Since its depth was less than 400 ft (which is why the bow was smashed off, like an wooden stick being pressed on a floor), a trained diver who is taking the dive seriously can survive reaching the floor. Of course, this is a different story for Titanic.

      Quick fact checks with the Imperator though. That ship got scrapped long after the Britannic sunk, after serving as Cunard's Berengaria post-WWI. Except Britannic wasn't torpedoed. There were no submarines in the Kea Channel at the time of her sinking though the channel was laced with mines that were placed by a submarine that had been there days earlier. The sub commander that placed the mines later reported that they had no intention of sinking a hospital ship as both sides agreed that properly designated hospital ships were non-combatant and not to be fired upon, though mines tend to be indiscriminate.
