So the only explainable reason is that a few miles ahead another U-Boat left a Mine. There has been quite a few historians that still believe it was a torpedo but that's not true. Now I am not completely sure but I am just going with what most historians said.
The general consensus among historians is that it was just a mine. There was an explosion, which could have been either, but even at the time, the investigation concluded that a mine was far more likely.
