I have a friend that has had a blue jay in her house for 17 years now...he can't be in the wild, since he's never been. He has quite the personality. He likes who he likes and will even attack the phone if he hears the voice of someone he doesn't like lol.

@@betzy7560 Instincts are indeed "wired" in, but what they learn from parents is as important or more so to survival, and hard if not impossible for humans to teach or guide. I might try to introduce a young bird to a flock hoping they'd adopt and teach ... Blue jays are much like crows.

I’m 70. When I was about 10 y/o, I was eating sunflower seeds, sitting on the grass under our backyard tree. This blue jay was in the tree watching me. He began hopping closer down the tree until he was on the lowest limb…about 8-10’ above me. I laughed and jokingly teased him with a few sunflower seeds on my open hand, raising my hand up to him. To my surprise, he swooped down and, without landing, took a seed. Maybe more, I dunno..but definitely took at least one seed out of my hand and immediately flew back to the lowest limb. I’d never been so stunned in my life and ran off screaming out this miracle to whomever would listen.

WHEN I WAS 14 ... I WALKED THROUGH A NEIGHBOR'S BACKYARD WITH A BIRD FEEDER .... SAW THERE WERE A FEW BIRDS THERE AND WALKED OVER SLOWLY ... GOT ABOUT 5 FEET FROM THE FEEDER AND STOPPED AND WATCHED THEM .... I PUT MY INDEX FINGER OUT (NOT OPEN HAND) AND THE DAMN BIRD CAME RIGHT OVER AND PERCHED ON MY FINGER AND TOOK A FEW SECONDS TO SAY HELLO ... THAT WAS THE HIGHEST PRAISE I HAD EVER BEEN GIVEN !!!!
WOULD ALSO FEED ROBINS BIRD SEED RIGHT OUT OF MY HAD ...AND SQUIRRELS PEANUTS OUT OF MY HAND ...
STANDING RULE WHEN YOU MEET A NEW FRIEND WITH FEATHERS OR FUR IS .... GIVE THEM WATER AND FOOD ... MAKE SURE IT'S VERY PURE WATER !!!!

My Papa raised doves for three decades. When he found out he was dying, he released them all. He kept feeding them and they kept on living nearby. After he died, I started feeding them. The doves and, by then, their grandchildren and great grandchildren stayed to nest nearby. I fed them until I left home and went off to college to remain distracted. Four years later, I moved back home while looking for work. I'll be damned if some of those morning doves didn't come right to me the first morning I went outside with two pocketsful of Planters Peanuts. It was amazing.

Crows, unlike their Raven relatives, lack the beak to break open skin. They do eat meat, if it’s already been “opened” (like roadkill or another animals’ kill) but if the animal is intact, they eat the soft bits. This is why crows hung around gallows and gibbet cages- they’d eat the eyes. If the animal was alive and too big to swallow in one bite, I don’t think it would’ve bothered to try to eat something it can’t.

This takes me back to my High School days when I would sit out on the balcony doing my homework and feeding the Squirrels. All told, by the time I graduated HS there were over a dozen squirrels who would be waiting at the sliding door in the mornings and waiting on me to get off the bus after school. While sitting at the bus stop just outside my door, the other kids started walking to my house so they could feed them as well. Then one day, while doing my homework a Blue Jay landed on the railing, eyeballing the peanuts and me like....Hey Dude...can ya help a feathered friend out? This was my Junior year and I know the pecking on the glass alarm very well. Harvey and Mabel were the first two, then others followed. My neighbors all started spending more time out doors so they too could hand feed the wildlife. The saddest day was when I shipped off to the Navy after High School. When I returned home, my Mother had continued feeding the wildlife and Chipper, the first squirrel to eat from my hand was so visibly excited it was like she was about to climb right out of her fur. So heartwarming to have been remembered by that little tree rat lol. That's my story. Thanks to all who read it and thanks to The Dodo for this walk down memory lane. Zip~

@@TheMrTslab It was so heartwarming. Chipper was a Female and she had a couple litters in the void between my ceiling and the third floor apartment floor and she would climb down from the rain gutter and scratch on my window so I would open it so she could help herself to the peanuts I always had on the window sill. When the babies were old enough she would introduce them to me. She was a character with her own very sweet personality. Sometimes she would come lay in my lap while I studied and sun herself while I fed the other critters. Good Memories! Thanks for reading my story!

Think about it this way. I dont know anyone that would shoo away a bird that came up to them and possibly landed on them. So its not likely they'll meet fowl play. (Omg. I cant believe I just said that).

The closest thing I had to a bird buddy was a wild turkey who showed up during late May of 2020 and stayed around until March 2021. I learned so much about turkeys during his stay and he even had a special dance for me. I've tried finding more information on the sound and dance he did but it seemed truly unique to him and him alone. We have some blue jays in the neighborhood but I haven't tried to making friends with them (yet).

I totally get it. I've got a 4 or 5 generation "murder" of crows that I've been feeding daily for years. They wake me up every single morning (which stinks on the weekends) and will even perch in the tree outside my office window to watch me while I'm working. When I'm taking too long in between breaks, they'll fly back and forth at the window level to get my attention - which really freaks out my rescue squirrel. I've now got Carolina Wrens (named Lo-Wren, Air-Wren and Cam-Wren) who land on my hand every day to get mealworms. It took a long time to gain their trust, but it's so cool building that bond with wild animals. Like many others out there, my hubby calls me Snow White too.

My mother started feeding them, puffed rice, roti (Indian food) since last one year or so, at first they were nervous. But now after a year or so, some sit on our sofas and eat directly out of her. It's an amazing feeling and seeing my mother so happy feeding those birds makes me so happy. Hence, the long comment. 💕

People don’t realize that sucks actually make wonderful pets! As long as they have the time to spend with them, and the space to allow them to run around and to swim freely. I got 3 ducklings one Easter when I was a kid. I raised them and we put up a fence in the back yard so they could roam freely in the yard with a little pond as well. They made great “guard dogs.” Also, they kept miles out of the yard bc they would eat all the grubs. I took one of their eggs once and used a home incubator and actually hatched a baby duckling. It was amazing. Just great pets.

@@mj6962They are the best! I have 4 extremely spoiled Cyuga ducks that my wife and I just simply can't ever get enough of. We made our backyard into a little duck paradise with several safe enclosed swimming ponds. We have a fairly large 1.5 acre garden that we grow their greens and even have a worm farm for them. Our neighbors love them(cyugas rarely quack) and we always have visits from the kids that live around us. They have become so popular in our neighborhood that we even give them birthday parties now🥳
If anyone is reading this and is thinking about getting a pet duck(or ducks) do know that I do spend nearly $700 a month on them between food , vet supplies, straw for bedding and an outstanding $340 water bill. You will be on their schedule so if you don't have 8hrs a day to dedicate everyday just be a duck fan instead of a duck owner. They WILL expect all your daylight time from sunrise - sunset.... But that is the best part of ducks imo👍.

Fun fact, Jays and Chickadees are some of the smartest birds with the highest cognitive abilities. Corvids including Jays have even been known to solve puzzles and use tools to obtain food. Chickadees even adjust how much they stash based on how hard the winter to come is going to be.

This was wonderful and nostalgic for me. We had Wing Nut at our farm for years. He had a wing that had been obviously broken and healed in a crooked fashion. When he arrived I started paying more attention to the bird feeders and made sure he always had food throughout the winter.
He couldn't fly but I watched him hop up the tree branches higher and higher until he got up high enough to glide to where he wanted to go. We have a 100-year old fir tree shelterbelt on the south side of the yard site, an old-growth Burr Oak forest in the northwest corner and a scrub poplar forest on the northeast corner. He could get anywhere on the 5-acre yard site by launching off the trees.
Unfortunately, West Nile in 2003 decimated our raven, crow and Blue Jay populations. Just last summer we had two Blue Jays return. I was so happy to hear their raucous noise at daybreak LOL

My mom does this also, she feeds Yellow Breasts as they are predominantly in our part of the country, and in the mornings their beautiful choruses let's us know that they are there and waiting on her generosity. What started out as one bird has easily become close to sixty or, I kid you not. She just loves 'em, it brings her joy.
She gives her four cats a scolding to let them know that the birds are off limits, and would you believe that they listen!? Omg, animals are amazing!

That is so cool, it brings tears to my eyes to know that birds and animals will interact with humans in these ways. Man is the most destructive animal in this planet, and these birds and animals still trust us. Truly Amazing!

That's crazy.I have those birds at my feeder.I'm going to try giving them peanuts(I never knew they ate those).
I am learning that birds are more social than I thought.
One day when my feeder was out i went and refilled it.Then all kinds of birds came flying out of every tree in my yard.I was astonished that they made the association between me and food.
I'm having fun learning about them.thanks for the video!

I saw on TH-cam an older woman that had fed birds her whole life and when she passed away her son went to the cemetery. A bird met him at the entrance and soon more came. They guided him to her grave. How’s that for Respect? ✨❤️✨

This is so beautiful to watch! I used to feed birds and squirrels and had two squirrels who would take a peanut in the shell from my fingers but never tried with the blue jays. They just ate from the railing. I thoroughly enjoyed this, thank you!

She should have left a letter to the new owner, explaining the feeding arrangement with the local bird population.
Of course, they'd have no obligation to carry on with the practice, but at least letting them know would be lovely.
Sad to think of those birds coming for peanuts as they had been for so long, and....nothing.😕
