Little known fact though, some of the vocals aren’t Annie, on Must Be Talking To An Angel, Sweet Dreams, Missionary Man, and others, some backing vocals were done by other singers, such as Joniece Jamison who also helped give Shakespeare’s Sister a similar boost.
The backing vocals were always duly credited on the inlay sleeves and if you take notice Annie never mimes to those parts on the videos, Joniece even appears on the Missionary Man video and on live shows, and don’t anybody get me wrong, it was mainly all Annie for the most part, but many people don’t realise that, mostly during the unworded parts when things get really high, echoey and intricate, it isn’t all Annie.
Just worth pointing that out because many people mistakenly believe it is.

Annie Lennox is the definition of Blue Eyed Soul. She sang a duet with Aretha Franklin and belted out ‘Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves’ right along with Aretha. They were friends from that time on until Aretha’s passing. Check that song out when you can.

    • @snorpenbass4196

Not sure who told you that, but it's not true. Aretha barely talked to Annie throughout the making of the song and the video. Later, Annie found out it was because Aretha thought she was a lesbian (she's not, but she is an ally). Aretha was, like many women her age, very...conservative about some things.

As a kid who graduated high school in 1984, Annie Lennox was beyond amazing. She may not have started the "Androgynous movement", but she was the one who brought it to American kids. She challenged the ideas of what women were supposed to look like at the time.

Annie is a very accomplished musician on her own. She was literally weeks away from graduating from the Royal Academy of Music where she studied the flute, piano and harpsichord when she dropped out to play those instruments in bands.
By the way, Dave long ago credited her with writing most of the lyrics to all their songs. He joked that every time she borrowed his coat, when he got ir back the pockets would be filled with napkins, gum wrappers, etc., with lyric ideas she had scribbled on them.
In a biography he credits her with spontaneously coming up with the lyrics to “Sweet Dreams” while listening to some synth music he had recorded on a reel to reel. The tinkling you hear when she sings “hold your head up, keep your head up” is actually both of them tapping on milk bottles.

The cow was a reference to how the music industry treats artists - basically as cattle that need to be fed and herded only for profit. Everything about this song and video were extremely radical for the time - the song itself, Annie's presentation with the hair and the suit (she was anything BUT the traditional presentation of a female artist) and Dave Stewart's creepy/cool/techno instrumentation. That time period (late 1970s/early 1980s) was a very radical experiment in what could be considered "mainstream" music (The Cars, The Pretenders, etc.)

People who never even listened to techno or rock or even western music, half a world away, heard this song on repeat (I know - I experienced this traveling). Believe me...it was huge. It still is.

If you were a teenager to early 20's when this came out in 1983 it is hard to describe how mind blowing this song and video was. I remember the absolute buzz in college with people constantly chattering in class about "Did you see the video with the girl with orange hair!". The singing, the andogynous look, the style was just absolutely riveting. I remember some of the richer students who had one of those new fangled VCRs and would get a copy from MTV and they'd have watch parties where they'd just put this video on endless loop. Like I said the buzz was crazy.

Sweet dreams was a reaction to the way they were treated by record executives when trying to get or renew their contracts, hence the ‘chorus’ of “some of them want to use you, some of them want to be used by you, some of them want to abuse you, some of them want to be abused” as a general description of executive / artist relations in the early 1980’s when the “casting couch” was as much a part of getting signed as an artist as it was in the film industry in places.

I didn’t realize just how amazing her voice is until I saw Michelle Chamuel sing “Why” on The Voice. It struck me that she was the first person I’d seen perform an Annie Lennox song…then I started really thinking about Annie’s songs and I realized that I’d never really LISTENED to it. I may have been listening to her songs, but I wasn’t paying attention to how incredible the singing was. I realized that the reason I’d never seen someone performing her music before is because it would be very difficult to do what Annie does vocally.

Her voice is pure and iconic and with a flawless range. Some brave souls have tried to cover her songs and in my opinion just can't compare. The only ones that 'succeed' are when they come out with a completely new arrangement and don't even attempt to replicate her sound. My opinion.

The video was inspired by a Fellini film -Juliet of the Spirits - the idea was to put things together that shouldn't be together, in a surreal way - here we have technology and nature. Eurythmics stated that when they put the cow in the boardroom it was out of place but when they put the technology in nature it seemed to fit. You should try the video for their songs Beethoven (I love to listen to) and Love is Stranger - Annie took on different personas and played with characters. Infamously she performed Sweet Dreams at the Grammys dressed as a man and had to provide MTV with her birth certificate to prove she was female after the station watched the Love is a Stranger video where she removes her wig and thought she was a male transvestite.

Definitely an 80's tune that was iconic.
It funny J that you mentioned Marilyn Manson, he did a version of this in the 90's that set off his career.

Annie and Dave Stewart, guitarist, used to be a couple around this time. She's a powerhouse vocalist. They had many hits. As mentioned awhile back please react to, "Love is a stranger", and "Right by your side". Also her duet with Aretha Franklin, Sisters are doing it for themselves. The 80s sisterhood theme!

    Try
    1. Carly Simon: “Jesse” such an (underplayed and underrated song)“He’s so vain”, “You Belong to Me”, “coming around again”…. So many great songs
    2. Carol King “so far away”, “I feel the earth move”, “it’s too late”, “will you still love me tomorrow“

I recently had to re-hear this song. I saw the title somewhere and said, "Jesse? I miss this?" Come to find out I've listened to this since it came out but must of never heard it say Jesse. What the hell was I hearing? Great Song. Everyone knows a Jesse.

OK guys, you want a weird one? PJ Harvey: "Down by the Water."
It's creepy, haunting, tells a story, and her voice is so different. Just something for your ears to soak in.

StILL waiting on Linda Ronstadt singing “ someone to lay down beside me.” It is the BEST. Amber, you will LOVE it. Some pretty piano for J. PlEASE, please please. she was the #1 female in the 70’s. Nobody could touch her. Her back up band eventually became the Eagles. I could go on and on about her. Another good tune by her is “ You’re no good.”

A similar group for Female Friday would be Alison Moyet of Yazoo - a few great songs are Situation, and Don't Go (both of these were standards in early 90's dance clubs) or Only You (soft and melodic). Alison has a killer voice, and Vince Clarke of Depeche Mode/Erasure does some of his best work as a vanguard of synth-pop.
