      Sad meaning the damage they were inflicting to themselves was terrible or sad meaning these days rugby players are becoming soft. Your comment could be read either way.

    I love the ABs, and have had wonderful times there with family at the south of the North Island, but that BOD spear tackle still looks horrific to this day. Unfortunately, the mic picks it up on this video (01:44+) even if the camera doesn't, and it sounds disgusting. You can see Gareth Thomas pointing it out and looking back, in other videos as it happened. It was well off the ball and the cynics out there may consider that BOD was targeted, having been so early in the first Test. One opponent doing it near the ball = accident. Two blokes doing it together and off the ball??
    I noticed that BOD's tackle just prior looked a little high, so perhaps that got the ABs blood boiling? The ABs are well known to play right up to the line (and occasionally over), but this was something else. We'll never know now. However, it certainly knocked the stuffing out of the Lions whole tour it seems, so job done I guess.
    Regardless, everybody moves on and I'm a big fan of the All Blacks and their dominance of the game. Their sheer will to win is what sets them apart, plus their refusal to take their foot off the gas even when they're miles ahead.
    Watching this test again I could see that the Lions were smaller in stature and had taken a few 'passengers' along. Body language wise, I didn't see that they had that 'belief' in themselves that is required to win out there.
    This tour squad will have to at least match the inner belief of the ABs if they are to have any chance. I personally think they are a far better squad than in 2005 on both points. Billy Vunipola will be a big loss, but I still think there's enough there to do the job. I personally can't wait for this series.

    • @spike1927
      @spike1927 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      p.s. Forgot to add that there were many differences during the teams during that tour but Dan Carter was absolutely incredible at this time, and unfortunately for the Lions, unstopppable. Quick to think and act, and as they said in one of these videos, how did he keep his composure to kick a difficult conversion from a tight angle straight after a 40 metre dash. He then went on to dominate the game in his position for many years afterwards. Having watched the Rugby Championship highlights, Beauden Barrett seems to be exactly the same kind of concern to the Lions chances. Just read he's had a recent head injury but hope he plays in the Series so the best go up against the best.

      @@spike1927 yes so fast forward to 2020. The 2017 Lions were very complete and perhaps deserved a series draw with the All Blacks. The loss of 6 players with 600+ caps between them did have an effect on the continuity of the team nevertheless the Lions were outstanding on this tour and a possible series win 2021 against the RWC '19 South Africans is on the cards.

      Because everyone had a secret grudge against BOD. They all colluded in the dark to take him down. It was all orchestrated by the NZ prime minister Helen Clark. Money was paid, favors were met. Everything was planned so BOD wouldn't take part in the the Lions tour and there would be NO repercussions.

    The spear tackle on O’ Driscoll was shocking and to make matters worse the citing officer took no action.
    However, Tana Umaga is a genuine world class centre and one incident should not be a reflection on his playing career.
    I would suggest that this incident was the main reason why Umaga somewhat surprised the Rugby world by retiring from international rugby at the end of 2005. He was still in top form and RWC was only 2 yrs away.
    The whole affair was a dirty chapter.

    Wow what an unbelievably talented team the All Blacks are. Just years ahead of other teams in skill levels and intensity.
    Shame they're also such cheats though and lacking in sportsmanship. They would have won comfortably anyways without purposefully injuring their opponents best player.

    • @TDMFAN
      @TDMFAN 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if what you were claiming is true (i.e. they purposefully did it) then that's 1-2 players out of 23 for that game and more who wouldn't have even been in the lineup. Oh and of course the team today is completely different. It seems like the Brits/Irish will never let go of this 12 year old incident.

      NZ is probably one of the most targeted teams when it comes to dirty play. We just don't bitch and moan about it as much as you lot do. Richie McCaw was kneed twice in the face by Irelands Jamie Heaslip, Andy Powell of Wales took a swinging arm at Richie McCaw's throat and Anton Oliver was stomped on the head by England's Danny Grewcock. The list goes on. Go on youtube and look up cheap shots against Richie McCaw.

    Man, the BOD one was pretty bloody awful. Not one of my proudest moments as an AB's fan. An equally dumb moment came when Woodward undermined his future selections, by inferring BOD was the heart beat of the team with a mass PR spin campaign. I rated BOD highly, best center in the world IMO, at the time. However, if BOD was the lynchpin of the side, then how did they think they were going to beat the All Blacks, when they were being outclassed in every other facet of the game?

      luca alright let's be objective. This should not happen on a rugby field anymore. I blame the officials for not reacting accordingly during the match, and after the match. NZRU also never took the right decisions afterwards to at least try to appease the lions supporters' anger. However I don't see the point in trying to bring the discussion up again 12 years after the infringement was made. BOD himself clearly stated that he didn't want that event mentioned anymore because it could stir retaliation against NZ opposition (or anyone else). Let's settle the debate now, it's getting childish

      Not "horrific." Unfortunate and accidental..............basic physics. Sour grapes even after 12 years. No surprise that Northern Hemisphere teams are so slow to evolve. Numerous, cynical professional fouls by the Lions remain unidentified by aggrieved Lions fans......."confirmation bias" at its most obvious. Let's hope that the Lions come to NZ aspiring to play entertaining, expansive, running rugby. The odds are low, but hope springs eternal. The rugby World cannot tolerate more endless bleating by the Home Nations, about how unfairly they are treated.

      If DC were injured, I'd expect that most would not have hinged the entire series on one incident! Nick Evans or Aaron Mauger would have come in and they would have consigned the whingers to another beating for the ages! Its rich to hear that sort of sook when the UK based decades of early rugby on thuggery and continue to uphold their roots in the Aviva Cup.... Child Please.

    In case you people want to know: this is the main reason why the All Blacks win games consistently because of the fact that they are the best team in the world 90% at the time they bend the rules but the officials JUST DON'T GIVE A DAMN AT ALL. So more of less they are the best CHEATERS in the world AS WELL!! BUT if you look at 2017 first game? It's a sign saying that it's about time that referees came to their senses if you know what I mean. But we all have to agree what Umaga and Meaulamu did to O'Driscoll here was indeed the most disgraceful cowardly act EVER in World Rugby history.
