New engines will shut down and go into limp mode if their fuel isn't completely perfect on the right octane, meanwhile this thing has been on the clock for 100 years burning crude oil that was in the ground half an hour ago, thumping away while casually on fire and not complaining a bit.
Yeah it loves the heavy fuel oil, which is basically sweet crude. You just need to heat it first. If you're interested, check out the fuel and fuel systems on merchant marine vessels.
New engines also make more than 1hp per liter. This thing is huge low specific power output stationary engine. It wouldn’t power anything particularly useful other than maybe an oil well pump. Even then it would still be somewhat useless since those usually often run off of well gas and not crude.
I have heard that the whistle on the exhaust is to tell people around that the engine and connected machines are running for bringing in business. Processing grain or other plants used for food.
The fire at the air intake needs to be going continuously to provide needed heat for "complete" combustion.... but the exhaust going through an air to air heat exchanger could do the same for both the air intake and the fuel oil heating....
Very low quality thick fuel oil one step above tar and requiring fire to thin it and fire to heat intake air before the engine can run.....and produce very low power for it's size.
Those guys filming are safety inspectors making sure proper safety measures are in place and the operator is wearing the proper safety clothing such as steel toed footwear, safety eyewear and no loose baggy clothing that can possibly get tangled up in the machinery. I’m sure a clean bill of health will be issued.😳🤔
Hej hej, Sweden. ❤ Sweden from the first time I was there in 2001. I had friends for 20 years, lived in Ulvshittan. They must be 86 y. bust lost all contact because off Coronacircus. I'm not injected and that is why I lost contact. So sad, maybe something happend there?? They came everery year to Belgium, but it is all gone.😔 I hope I can drive with the motorcycle to Sweden again, but time has changed so much. It is so sad to see beautiful Sweden going down. Sorry for my interuption, but it just came up. Hej då.
Ha, right now, as I write, I'm sitting in my car watching TH-cam, waiting to be towed because my battery has died. Yes, honestly! Seems the old belts and pulleys aren't such a bad idea after all!

Why not bend the exhaust pipe around and create a "heat exchanger chimney" of hot exhaust gases around the fuel oil feed pipe to take over heating the black oil after the initial fire dies down??? Extend the exhaust up above the height of that wall so the exhaust also sucks air up the "chimney" and away from the operator...... There must be a near crippling amount of carbon in the cylinder and air intake from that smokey bit of burning material on the engine's air intake... again a part of the exhaust gases could run through a heat exchanger to provide heated air for the engine...without all that carbon... (like the heat exchanger tube running under the intake manifold on an old air-cooled VW... exhaust gases keep that hot to vapourise the fuel in the air/fuel mix from the central carb all the way out to the intake ports on the heads).

22 HP are equal to 16,18 KW... I guess that 2 kilowatts of load capacity could be converted to electricity by small generator (and I probably saw it spinning by the brick wall) and then passed to a tubular electric heating element to heat up the oil. As result - exclude distracting the operator for adding wood to the fire. Isn't it more sensible?

Fit a whistle to your car exhaust and it would sound the same
You have a great wee industry going there fella well done...
I love how the thing is just casually on fire
burning very low quality, barely refined fuel (if it's refined at all).... needs that pre-heating to make it flow and be able to actually burn
The fire at the air intake needs to be going continuously to provide needed heat for "complete" combustion....
but the exhaust going through an air to air heat exchanger could do the same for both the air intake and the fuel oil heating....
That's a beautiful engine.
