Craftling: Kraken Guitar

- The plan was, to build an electric guitar without power tools and it worked quite well. The only things I despaired of, were the inlays. Unfortunately, I had to cheat there. All in all, the construction took two months and was quite exhausting in some points.😅
It's my fifth self-built guitar. The look should be rustic and "pirates of the caribbean-style". At some point during construction I noticed that the body has something of an octopus, so I chose the corresponding inlay in the 12th fret. The body is made of maple with an oiled and waxed bog oak top. The three-part neck is made of beech and walnut wood. After long consideration, I decided to use golden hardware that I aged with hydrochloric acid (attention ... dangerous!).
The body has two chambers for weight loss. The "F-hole" is more decoration without an acoustical advantage and the cutaway is sufficient for me, but certainly not for everyone.
I ended up playing the guitar with my limited playful abilities over my Orange Dual Terror and my self made 1x12 cabinet. The recording was done simply with a Zoom H4n in front of the speaker without further editing.
The pickups (Duesenberg Humbucker) are splitable and produce a similar sound as the guitar from the last video. Unfortunately, the actual "pressure" of the combination does not show in the recording, but I'm pretty happy with the sound of the guitar. Compared to my last guitar she is not so heavy and clunky, also the sound seems somehow "more open" ... difficult to describe ... I like it. What do you think about it? Maybe someone has an idea how to get a octopus inlay in a fretboard with hand tools ;-)
Happy new year my friends!
Duuuuuuuude ... This is not a guitar. This is a piece of art. You've got my every bit of respect.

I always dreamed of crafting my own guitar. after watching this without skips. I have decided to just buy from the guitar shop 😂. Great Job man!
you don't have to build your own but why not buy from someone doing this kind of work? you'll get a unique guitar and allow a person to keep doing what they love. it could be a win-win if you find the the right luthier.
@@jeffkelly4721 I agree with you man. I'll try to find someone who does the same stuff here in my town. but I bet this wont be cheap eh. 😅 . need to save most of my money for this.
@@armandcrispo the money is the tough part of this for sure. i have $3000+ invested in two bass guitars that will need to be with me for the rest of my life. i also put one together from Warmoth parts. i was super happy with the quality of the body and neck i bought from them. you might check into it if you want to pretend you built a guitar from scratch ($1400-1500 all assembled - body, neck, hardware, pickups).
@@jeffkelly4721that's a great option though. So I can just mix and match all the goodies in there. but still it's quite pricey for me. but a 1-2000$ guitar is so much better investment than a Samsung s10. just saying 😂.

Started watching just to have something interesting playing in the background. Before long, my eyes were glued to the screen and I watched the entire video with a sense of morbid fascination. An hour to resaw that board?! You're an absolute masochist, but I can't fault your dedication. Your hand must've been screaming.
I think not only the hand has screamed.......
Same started watching it halfway curious but quickly focused in. Very cool.
Just lost 47 min of work, but it was worth it
Same I was thinking I don't have time to watch all this. 25 minutes later, still watching, might as well finish!
Lol. Same here....i don't play any instruments but was quite satisfying to watch. To whoever this was...hats off to ya sir.
I love watching custom guitar builds because it’s my favorite 3 interests for the future. Art, guitars and woodworking all in 1 video. Incredible video
That was magnificent. Old world craftmanship. I started watching and was mesmerized, couldn't take my eyes off this. Fantastic build. The level of detail, care, and love of his work was amazing.
Found this by accident on a different search (it was 'recommended' to me by TH-cam). Just started watching and couldn't stop. At some point, I noticed that my mouth had fallen open, and I was sitting here, enthralled. Had to tell myself to blink. Extraordinary video. There should be some sort of "Best of TH-cam" award for it.
The sound ultimately was unique and spectacular.
Ironic that you decided to build without power tools, something utterly reliant on power for its raison d'être (unless you consider it pure art, for which there is a case to be made).
A stunning achievement (I was stunned, anyway).
Thank you.
Story goes that he started building the guitar in late 1980s and when he finally finished it 30 years later in 2018 he realised that no-one likes rock-music anymore and everyone is into mumble rap. When he realised he had spent 30 years building something that wasn’t ”cool” anymore he fell into depression and shortly after that he started drinking. Legend says that sometimes you can hear the Kraken screaming under the bridges or near the homeless shelters.
In all seriousnes that is one hell of a instrument and i can’t wrap my head around the fact how long that must have taken! You sir, have a great gift!
😂😂😂Maybe someone will make a movie about it ... Thanks a lot!👍
More sad story than Titanic, Hamlet and Green Mile together.

26:26 gave me a moment of shattering heartbreak thinking you went too far or something... Huge relief when you went on to make it thinner. Great work!
You have the skill of an artist, soul of a musician and patience of a saint brother, well done.
My grandpa loved this video he’s been playing guitar for 56 years and says you are very talented and loves the guitar you made
U know what they say, they say they build "hand made" guitar.actually what they do?They operate heavy machinery by hand. but here, this guy build actual fully hand made guitar,a piece of art!!!
But little cheat modo
He said hand made but still used a saw and sander. Waste of goddamn time.
Nah. Machinery is fine. Nothing wrong with using a planing machine, because the end product will be much better. Hand made does not mean constructed with hand tools.
@@Kyle-gw6qp i think he means that most people go to these "hand made" videos in the hopes of proof it's not that impossible to do things by hand only to see everyone just busting out their thousands of dollars worth of machinery
This is the first video, I didn’t look at the length of, and watched the WHOLE thing. 10/10
this should go in a guitar museum after all the greatest living guitar players played it. :)

As someone who has bitched and moaned while building guitars with all the electric tools in the world, I am deeply humbled by your technical brilliance and artistic genius. Good Lord Man! What an amazing video. Thank you so much for posting!!!
The voice montage, the making of guitar, a finest Craftsman, the art of patience, the optimum utilization of time.
Probably the best video on TH-cam.
If I am ever going to buy a guitar, it's definitely from you. Loved it.
Beautiful craftsmanship watched the entire video without budging from my seat. dude you are the man. respects.
I would pay tons to buy this from someone and not because of quality but because of how much work and dedication went into this
That inlay is a killer!!!! I loved every minute of the whole construction, a work to admire. Bravo!!!
I do not often comment on videos.
But seriously, everything was crazy on this one.
Wood burning. Hand tools (cheat mode, haha).
I cannot even imagine the patience, the focus and the efforts you put in this piece. And the technique.
Your instrument has its own story and oh boy, does sing pretty well !
A lot to be proud of.
Cheers, and thanks for the share and the continuous "wow" watching you giving life to the woods.
Can we take a few moments to appreciate how skilled this guy is? Like everything he does in this video is well thought out, down all the way to the camera angles. Its actually really inspiring tbh.
Edit: I just took a look at this guy's channel, I was curious to see what other stuff he knows how to do. This dude it like the ultimate tradesmith
Wow I wasnt expecting the sound test to sound so good. Wow.
I appreciate you leaving in the parts other builders leave on the cutting room floor... the exhaustion and pain involved with hand tools. Great Job!
I've watched a lot of videos of people building their own guitars and what's crazy about this guy is he literally does everything by hand, even using a hand-saw and a chisel to grout. Every other video they have belt sanders and grouting machines and so on. It's like watching a Hatori Honzo sword being made. Amazing.
i love his commitment, even when he could use the most common power tool, he sticks with it and uses a hand tool
This is Tue first hand made guitar I have seen. Wow. Absolute respect to your tool use.
It wouldn't let me "Like" twice. I have watched it twice, and will again many times over and over. Very fascinating to be sure, and educational. I build solid bodies, and there is so much to take away from your process/approach...
Need to be honest; Man this is the hardest thing that I have ever seen. I got tired when I was watching it. Biggest respect from my side!
Legends say he’s still sawing
Often . . . when the wind dies down . . . if you listen closely . . . you will still hear him sawing through the night

This is beautiful craftsmanship! I’m currently doing a “hand tool only” guitar myself and I can appreciate all the work that went into this!
Awesome. Learned a lot watching this. Pleasant on the ears and eyes, too. Great editing. One minor tip: masking tape over the pickups when you file down the bridge. Those filings can get in there and screw with 'em.

Just one word - f*****g amazing! Ok, two words but it was worth it. I’m rarely glued to such a long video as this one. I was so engrossed that my hands actually felt the blisters you had, having worked wood with files I could empathise. Lots of skill and patience especially when one wrong move could mean a complete restart. A brilliant self-made documentary. 👍👍👍

Some people will say this is 47 and a half minutes they will never get back.. I say they don't understand in the satisfaction of building your own guitar from scratch and being able to play it.. I actually made a guitar like this but changed up the body engravings a little (still kept some original) and gave the neck a slightly darker colour.. but had to keep the kraken inlays.. I did however add a few more inlays ranging in different sizes.. I'm not saying I don't have my own style but I loved the style so much I had to make my own! Great work man

Amazing is the only word I can come up with after watching this video! I build kit guitars in the spare room in my apartment but after watching your build I will certainly give building one from scratch a try. About the only thing I wish you would have covered a little better was what you used to finish the body and neck. I look forward to seeing what you do next as well as looking at your past videos.
@Erik Yes I am, I'm making a tele body to replace the body on my Squire 51, I'm at the "route the p/u and neck cavity" stage.
@Erik Nice, good luck! I buy and build my guitars. I buy inexpensive guitars on offer up or build kits and donate them to the Jimi Hendrix Foundation so underpriveliged kids can learn to play, it's my way of keeping busy and giving back to an industry that's been pretty good to me over the last 60 years.
@Erik Take your time, plan it out and do it right, I spent months figuring how I wanted to stain my latest one. Make sure you have all the tools and necessities ready to go. The kit I'm building now has taken me over 4 months but I'm retired and take my time.
Wow. Great work. Amazing. Also, thank you for not leaving the viewer hanging by not playing the guitar at the end! Others who made guitars didn't play them at the end and it's very dissatisfying :-) great sounding guitar and nice playing, man
