  • Here’s our first little tool review/ demo of one of our favorite tools. It’s the mastercool hydraulic flaring kit. It’s not cheep. 300 bucks. But as someone who needs to make flares it’s well worth it.
    If you want little demos on how to use the other flaring dyes let us know in the comment section!
    Here’s the amazon link we’re I got the tool. This video isn’t sponsored sadly.

    Here is a Tip for you that you will appreciate years to come. Never ever do any flare of any type dry! use Grease!! just like the commercial machines do. I found that CRC red grease rattle can works great but any lube is better than none. Your dies will not last long and mar the lines if you keep using it dry.

      True, but i can honestly say ive been using this same tool for going on 15 years and never wore out a die yet…..used daily

      Try greasing the dies on this when flaring a tube for quick connect fittings, it will slip every time. Only grease I use on it is for the threads, and on the cone end. Besides, snap on sells these, and will warranty the dies if they ever need replaced. Yes they mar the lines, but the dies need to grip them some how, 10 seconds with some sandpaper after flaring and its perfect.

    I first used one of these in 2010 redoing my pickup. Loved it, wanted one, and finally ten years later got a set this week. It it nice because it will also do JIC/AN flares as well for hydraulics with the appropriate die set.

    I just bought this exact tool and washer video as to how to use it it was very easy to follow your instruction and I just crimped successfully my first stainless steel 3/8 brake line and it looks absolutely beautiful I cannot believe I didn't buy this tool sooner this is an absolute lifesaver. I couldn't crimp a stainless steel line to save my life with any other tool and it come out successfully. I'm so excited to have a tool that gives you a factory perfection crimp!!!!

    After attempting several different style tools (20 rail style, 20 dollar 'in-line' style, rental kit from auto store) to make double flares - I finally bought one of these kits.
    One note is - you can give it too much pressure!
    Does work on coated 3/16 - as mentioned, puts some grooves in the coating but holds tight.

    Just bought a Carlyle flaring tool. Fittings kept leaking and realized the flaring tool had no teeth in the 3/16 portion, when compressing the brake line all it would do is push it back and make a horrible flaire. 8 hours I was so made. Have done brake lines before and never had an issue. The tool cost me $75 at Napa and they won't let me return it.

    I've caught he'll on those flare fittings before ,just on the water plumbing ones . The brakes and fuel lines are even harder. A mechanic put a compression fittings on one of my car because he couldn't do it. It makes me laugh when I see people buy those cheap sets because I know they don't work. I'm going to buy one for fixing fuel lines on my truck. I hope it works.

    I can definitely see how this is worth the $200 or $300 price tag, but I'm also amazed at how well a $20 flaring kit will do by comparison. I've used mine several times with excellent results. You have to put a lot more elbow grease into it, but it definitely gets the job done. But if I had to flare brake lines multiple times a day? I would definitely buy this tool. Thanks for a great video.

      10 years ago these were on tool trucks for at least 600 bucks and taiwanese, not even US made. Figure a manual flare tool does less stuff and only will last for for so many jobs typically.
      These Amazon and Eastwood units (same unit maybe ?) Being around 300 bucks sometimes less is amazing to me

      Biggest reason I got the Mastercool was for the quick connect flares for fuel lines, and GM transmission cooler lines. No more waiting a few days from the dealer for the good pre bent stuff. 30mins and I'll make my own.

    Lol this is funny. I've been working for Benz 21 yrs. This video popped up and it's a C-Class lol this chassis has huge problems with rusted brake lines and rear subframes. Of course you know that since you work for Benz.

    In the video you show the tool being used on a bare brake line, have you used it on the MB coated lines? I bought the Eastwood vise mounted tool and it doesn't seem to hold the line tight enough because of the coating. Curious how it works on the coated lines from MB. Thanks!

    • @dkrems739
      @dkrems739 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man. I'm the guy in the video. And yes it works great on the mb coated lines. You just end up with some grooves from where the die bites into it. Everyone at work borrows my kit when we do brakes lines. We typically just get the rolls of it and make the lines. I did my 163 a few months ago and no issues

      I did rusted and weak brake line repair on a Cadillac Escalade from some northern salt state (i am in south Texas) a few days ago. Hence why i am here trolling the flaring tool vids. This tool would have been a great thing to have, but i managed just fine with my manual flare set. Though i do plan on getting one of these very soon. I am doing a brake mod and oil line cooler mods on a 1969 harley, so i thing push connectors and the ability to easily flare stuff would be awesome.

      Even if you dont use it everyday, still worth it. Any decent flare tool is around a hundred bucks. I couldnt get the other tools to work. It takes practice and trial and error.
      This tool is fool proof and will save you a lot of time.

    Never had a hand flare tool work on steel brake lines the die center pin was always way under size and did not a line right and would spilt and not form right . It's like the industry does not want anyone to be able to do there own work / it can't about cost no way would it be harder to make the pin and die fit the line better . They have been selling the same JUNK for 50 year's with dubbel flare rating and it's 100 BS there are better tools butt there not available from parts store's.

    A week on brake lines? Are you flat rate? My god I'm sorry lol. Never spent longer than 4-5 hours on a complete replacement of all line even with the shitty manual flare tools. Just sounds like you cant manual flare for shit, but a lot of people these days cant anymore, kind of a dying art that I'm glad is dying lol. Just bought one of these Mastercool kits, very nice piece, Pro tip, since yours didn't come with it, Id at lest order the 3/8s GM trans cooler line dies, They WILL save your ass one day. Was the main reason I ordered the kit, alone with the quick connect dies.

    He said "copper brake line".
    Folks, dont ever use copper on a brake line. It will not last and will fail. Way too soft. Besides, using a hydraulic tool on soft metal is way overkill.

    • @BloodRaven1969
      @BloodRaven1969 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It is Flexi-Bend high nickle/copper BRAKE line, sold by the roll. About $50 for 25' of 3/16 line, black fittings available for added no rust protecting. The line bends easy, is rated AT MINIMUM equal to standard steel line, and it will never rust or corrode. Great stuff, but to my mind not worth the cost aside from custom builds or race cars (where ease of fixing/replacing w/o hassles in fast fashion counts.

      as i understood it's not just copper but an alloy that is supposed to be as good or better then the steel line that rusts in short order (at least here in mn)

    • @benbee2922
      @benbee2922 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He said copper-nickel. Best thing ever invented. Can shape and bend with your fingers. I have found it as cheap as (2) 25ft rolls for $20 on ebay.

      He's using copper nickel alloy brake lines which are designed for the job. It's used as original equipment on several European cars.
