hello Felicia i meet you at London comic con on Sunday 24th may, i was in the first Que dressed as buzz light year and i did not have a smiley the first time round but then i had one for the afternoon session and yu welcomed me back with open arms, honestly you are the most famous person i have ever met and the friendliest, YOU MADE MY DAY.
Thank you for this episode. It bought back a lot of memories of watching my older brothers play this game. They didn't get as frustrated as you guys but it was still god to see the game again.
MarkerInTheSand It might not be such a quick wit thing. I bet he said that plenty of times in the past hence the look on F.Day face, they are after all siblings.
Pro Tip.. There is a Gauge on the bottom of Ur screen the show a percentage.. That Maximizes too 100%.. Wait till the Gauge Hit's a 100% percent, then Attack.. Every time U Attack by spamming Ur attack Button it will attack the enemy @ a Lower Hit Rate then it would @ 100%.. Lower Hit rates Give U either a Lower Hit's or even miss the attack target completely..
Duuuude this game is amazing! Just gotta gain levels, watch your health, and figure out how to best hurt the bosses. I think this is a great game that does this without being too repetitive.
luckyhmongkey Yeah, it's a great game-- just a bit difficult if you don't know what you're doing. Games back then didn't hold your hand through an hour-long tutorial mission. They sent your ass back in time, gave you a bone and a dog, and said "There are dinosaurs. Try not to die. Got it?"
MrBazBake More specifically, level up your _spells._ The attack spells in this game power up with repetitive casting, and they reach _insane_ levels of effectiveness. Spending some time practicing your very first spell will turn it into an attack that can carry you through the game. Granted, it wouldn't be very fun to watch Ryon and Felicia grind for an entire video. That's more of a "Chewie and Fuckface" thing.
Nice; I've always thought this game was super under-appreciated, like the dark shadow of Secret of Mana. If I remember correctly, the plot gets pretty weird and interesting as you near the end.
Retromancers Underrated? I wouldn't say that. Its a decent game with good ideas but the execution is flawed. The plot, environment, graphics, sound are debatable. Personally I kinda like them all but what isn't debatable is its game play and simply put Secret of evermore has a flawed combat system. The hit detection is simply atrocious. It doesn't really become too noticeable until later areas in the game where you start to fight small and flying enemies. You pretty much need to charge your weapon in order to hit enemies because the charged attacks seem to hit more reliably. Thats another problem though because you have to level up every weapon you get which means you have to use the crappy regular attacks and like I said later on the enemies are much harder to hit due to the hit detection making combat worse. On top of that throw in the level design. The game has a lot of tight corridors so if you want to just run around past annoying enemies its difficult due to getting hit causes knock back. That or theres not enough room to get around some enemies. Then if that isn't bad enough you have a high respawn rate on some monsters. So lets sum it up. You have to wait 10 seconds to charge a weapon in order to hit normal enemies which may take a few hits. when you do kill them if you run a few steps you'll keep fighting newly respawned enemies. Of course this is all remedied by simply spamming alchemy. Alchemy essentially breaks the game because ingredients are easy to get and you don't really need to spend much money on armor/healing items because you can just use alchemy to heal/cure yourself. Which is another problem. You get too many spells that are useless in the game. All you really need are a few healing/buff and like 1 or 2 attack spells and you'll roll through enemies. Its not a bad game but I think that it lacks the polish secret of mana has. Its the first game made by a new studio in the united states and it certainly feels like it.
Interesting, I don't remember having any hit detection problems back in the day (at least no worse than Secret of Mana), but I guess it's one of those "your mileage may vary" type of things. As far as the necessity of powering up your weapons strikes, I might have sidestepped that somewhat because I tend to uber-level my characters like crazy.
Retromancers You don't have to level up your weapons but it helps because charged attacks do more damage but have a better hit rate. Unless you're spamming alchemy you're either stuck leveling up weapons or leveling up one weapon and just using that even if it becomes outdated by newer ones. The hit detection is much better in mana then evermore. Evermore could of used some more testing and playthroughs before being released to iron out those issues.
Used to love this game. Definitely one for a kid with a whole weekend to kill finding all the secrets, perhaps not for a one-off show about poor cooperation. Was really hoping you'd take down that first boss and get the axe and that fire alchemy... Man, good memories.
I really love that game, and it makes me kind of sad inside to not only hear you hate it and talk bad about it, but see you fail and so saddened by it.
William Bowles The game definitely took a while to grow on me. I sympathize with Felicia and Ryan's frustration with it. It takes a few hours of game play before the really interesting parts come to the surface, and by that time you might have already quit.
William Bowles To be fair, both of them generally fail and suck at the games they play on this show, but this episode was probably one of the failest they made. I had this game as a teen, really enjoyed it, and I don't remember having as much trouble as they had, back in the days before gamefaqs, but then, leveling up my character and spells and weapons in a RPG is obvious to me.
Guys I know you were in pain but i swear this episode made me laugh SO MUCH! This is the kinda game that makes the funniest episodes. Please do more retro games like this !!
I actually liked this game back in the day. One thing to note is that you can find alchemical ingredients for your "spells" in the game all over the place. Your dog will lead you to them; just watch for when he starts sniffing around. The spells in the game are key to making the game much easier. That and as others have mentioned, you need to wait until your gauge is 100% before attacking to get full damage. Also as you play you will get weapon levels that let you charge up for a stronger attack. Most of these conventions are familiar to those who have spent a good amount of time with Secret of Mana, which was an inspiration for SoE.
King Richard This is a two player game, just only while the dog is on the screen. You merely never had a friend try it. I've had several friends with this game, and every single one of them had the dog as playable. However, since the dog is not always around, it cannot be called a multiplayer game.
One of the best games ever. I love the magic system of this game. Especially that you do not use mana and that the dog can find the ingredients everywhere in the levels.
***** Just happened to be the word that became well-known first I suppose, though it's also a bit easier for English speakers to pronounce, lol. And I hadn't heard of 'leedvermaak' until now, so that's pretty interesting!
That was my favourite SNES game of all times! :) And yes, games have been harder back then... i cant even tell how hard i raged when those bridgs constantly kept collapsing... For fighting the first Boss (in germany it was calles Vulgor) -> level up your bone to Level 2 (so you can load your attack) before you go to the boss -> gather enough ressources for some fireballs before you go to the boss -> destroy the claws via fireballs -> then go inside with a LOADED Attack, and unleash it on his heart -> Repeat
That was so hilarious to watch, and a tribute to the difficulty of old games. I was definitely guessing that they needed to find/buy a new weapon before that spot, it shouldn't take 6 swings to kill a basic enemy this early in the game.
I remember having trouble with that same boss. I farmed up for a while, which was a lot more fun than it sounds. You keep mixing ingredients to discover more spells. I think they would have done better by farming for a bit.
Fun Fact: Secret of Evermore was one of the very few games ever made by the North American division of Squaresoft, maybe even the only one. It was also never released in Japan, and only showed up in North America, Europe and Australia.
Don't know if anyone has suggested Altered Beast as a game for one of these episodes, but I think you would both love that game, and it has a plot with Greek mythology in it.
It's still one of my favorite co-op rpg games. There weren't a lot of rpg co-op game around that time that I know of... Probably less stressful to play if you guys made it further into the game to get another team member to access the co-op portion of the game. Or... maybe more stress trolling each other with the added team member xD
Sometimes games just break you. Or just kill a little part of you, on the inside. Pick a game you love for the next one and let's get this co-op party back on track!
haha the looks on their face when more raptors popped out was great. he was so relieved and thought it was over lol. if you beat the raptors a guy in the village will give you a grass vest lol. just sayin and it might help if you level up the bone crusher to level 2 an charge up your attack when you hit thraxx in the heart lol.
I mentioned it in my comment. The Dentata, an anti-rape device worn by YT in the book. Basically it gives your vagina teeth. Though as I recall, in the book it was actually an electric shock, but the idea of scaryness down there is the theme. So kudos to him for the instant connection.
I have, sadly, played this game before. I didn't remember it until the dog pulled the dead boy into the bushes to do who knows what to him... Then the memories came flooding back: being flung out of holes... I never got as far as you guys. I quit.
Secret of Evermore is actually a very hard game, even more-so early on when you have nothing to rely on, and even then it's hard when you don't know your dog can sniff out items, that the game can be played two-player, and how to abuse the invulnerability mechanic while casting items/spells... so.. yeah.. This reminds me of the time a few years back when I convinced my girlfriend to play Ultima Online after she had only played MMOs like City of Heroes and WoW. Modern (at the time) MMOs, in other words. If Felicia had been crying by the end as well, that would pretty well sum up the experience. I've never seen anyone so frustrated and defeated by a game as she was.
I'd like to suggest the SNES game title "S.O.S.". Story is like Poseidon Adventure. It may be hard to find. This game caused me to pay several late fees to Blockbuster back in the day. You will enjoy it.
Hoooooooolishit I actually remember playing this game... I totally forgot about it and it all came back to me when I saw the muscular mutant dog... Shiiiszz
my favorite game of all... TIME! even today i dont get how this game was not successful back in the days, i wish it had a sequel os something like that...
They already played Secret of Mana, they should have remembered how the attacks work. Instead of spamming it, you wait for the % under your health bar to fill to do more damage.
"my crotch is barking -is it friday already?" .... :O) lmfao
Everybody's favorite siblings....
Geek & Sundry I am frustrated after having just watched this game... couldn't imagine playing it
This episode was a riot! Thanks Felicia Day and ***** for the laugh!
Dustin Hudyma, can't believe you watched it without me. :'(
Elaina Hudyma It's worth a second viewing. 😀
Geek & Sundry Secret of Mana!
hello Felicia i meet you at London comic con on Sunday 24th may, i was in the first Que dressed as buzz light year and i did not have a smiley the first time round but then i had one for the afternoon session and yu welcomed me back with open arms, honestly you are the most famous person i have ever met and the friendliest, YOU MADE MY DAY.

My Crotch is barking.
Is it friday already?
God damn Ryon is good.
StabStabStabStabby I lol'd.
StabStabStabStabby I lol'd, but I was also impressed with his quick wit.
MarkerInTheSand It might not be such a quick wit thing. I bet he said that plenty of times in the past hence the look on F.Day face, they are after all siblings.
I love it when you play these old games. So much nostalgia of the frustration they provided.

"Sadly, Anvss and Poopie never came back..."
For those of you who read the comments before watching the video for some reason, this is what to expect.
Got it?"
Generic game advice of the year: level up, watch health and beat bosses!
luckyhmongkey The solution to every RPG starts with "gain levels and watch your health." Unfortunately, Evermore is booty.
It starts off with time travel to that time H.R.Giger monsters killed the dinosaurs, and you are saying it gets weird near the end?
The Paul Fair point...but I do think it gets even weirder!
Retromancers Underrated? I wouldn't say that. Its a decent game with good ideas but the execution is flawed. The plot, environment, graphics, sound are debatable. I really love that game, and it makes me kind of sad inside to not only hear you hate it and talk bad about it, but see you fail and so saddened by it.
William Bowles Same here, man. But I guess they're playing to entertain, and not enjoy games?
William Bowles The game definitely took a while to grow on me. I sympathize with Felicia and Ryan's frustration with it. It takes a few hours of game play before the really interesting parts come to the surface, and by that time you might have already quit.
William Bowles same- I really liked it too... It had a lot of original ideas you didn't see and great graphics for the time.
Haha your faces of frustration reminded me of how I felt when I played this game when I was a teenager!
Guys I know you were in pain but i swear this episode made me laugh SO MUCH! This is the kinda game that makes the funniest episodes. Please do more retro games like this !!
That was one of the best episode ever))) Thx u!
Love the Deckard Cain Diablo reference. "Stay a while and listen."
This was one of my favorite games growing up, and it took me forever to learn how combat worked. It's good to see it getting some frustrating love!
They both seemed to be in a irritable mood which made the episode funnier than usual LOL
I actually liked this game back in the day. One thing to note is that you can find alchemical ingredients for your "spells" in the game all over the place. Ryan's Shirt/Short/FiveFingers combo is the bomb
Anybody else notice they used a 'v' instead of a 'u' on the character naming screen? Anvss...?
Yes!! I thought I was the only one
I noticed it too.
Because they're kvlt as fvck!
Love both of you and Geek and Sundry!
It's so funny how Felecia always moves her arms that way when she does certain voices! LOL 4:44
This is the first time I ever watch a Co-Optitude. You had my curiosity with Secret of Evermore. You had my attention with the yeast infection.
You probably heard this by now but this was a two player game
IMIRLegend haha ... you are right. I've even played it but through the whole episode never even remembered that.
No it's not. I should know, I rented this game many times over as a kid and played with my brother.
King Richard This is a two player game, just only while the dog is on the screen. You merely never had a friend try it. I've had several friends with this game, and every single one of them had the dog as playable. However, since the dog is not always around, it cannot be called a multiplayer game.
You are having a Sinbad as a genie moment buddy- it was not two player, you have to patch it.
One of the best games ever. I love the magic system of this game. Especially that you do not use mana and that the dog can find the ingredients everywhere in the levels.
This game was one of my favorites back in the day. Played it together with my sister. :)
I love it when you guys go back to retro games.
The video was super fun to watch despite your frustration, congratulations!
Thank you for posting this super silly game. I have had a rough day, and Cooptitude made it all better. :D
This game is so good... I want to see them get good at it. Like, using the spells maybe?
+DNAlien You don't have spells during the prehistoric era.
Why the episodes where they fail miserable are the most entertaining?
Heikki Mustonen I think the Germans would sum it up with that classic word of theirs: schadenfreude. :P
HaveCarapace why do the german always get credit for having a word for it :S we dutch people call it leedvermaak. translates to the same.
***** Just happened to be the word that became well-known first I suppose, though it's also a bit easier for English speakers to pronounce, lol. And I hadn't heard of 'leedvermaak' until now, so that's pretty interesting!
Schadenfreude is well known because it's a song in the musical Avenue Q
Katie Husband
how does co-optitude have so many fewer views than the other geek & sundry shows? I came for the table top but stayed for the co-optitude.
That was my favourite SNES game of all times! :) And yes, games have been harder back then... i cant even tell how hard i raged when those bridgs constantly kept collapsing... I did not expect Secret of Evermoe of all games to proverbially ride you guys hard and put you away wet.
Wasn't expecting an episode today, so this is neat ☺
I remember having trouble with that same boss. I farmed up for a while, which was a lot more fun than it sounds. You keep mixing ingredients to discover more spells. I think they would have done better by farming for a bit.
Fantastic episode! It was such a hard game even back in the day. :)
I wish someday I'll be as happy as they are when there's name choosing in a game
Actually one of my favorite SNES games, and I think I want to play this again haha.
That's actually the most atmospheric game I ever played on the SNES.
"Is it Friday already?" Hahaha, he's the best.
Fun Fact: Secret of Evermore was one of the very few games ever made by the North American division of Squaresoft, maybe even the only one. It was also never released in Japan, and only showed up in North America, Europe and Australia.
I beat this game a couple of years ago, it really wasn't as hard as it's made out to be. Really fun, actually.
Don't know if anyone has suggested Altered Beast as a game for one of these episodes, but I think you would both love that game, and it has a plot with Greek mythology in it.
My brother and I love that game. We never died on the first boss. We always wanted tell we reached level 10 before we move on in the story.
So I just finished watching the guild.
I've never seen Felicia do anything else, so that opening line was quite different to what I expected XD
It's still one of my favorite co-op rpg games. There weren't a lot of rpg co-op game around that time that I know of... Probably less stressful to play if you guys made it further into the game to get another team member to access the co-op portion of the game. Or... maybe more stress trolling each other with the added team member xD
This game is my absolute favorite SNES game. I beat this game like 5 times. God it's so fun.
Sometimes games just break you. Or just kill a little part of you, on the inside. Pick a game you love for the next one and let's get this co-op party back on track!
Felicia: 5000 maggots burrowing into all my orifices.
Fuckin lucky maggots!
OMG! You guys should totally play Trap Gunner! It would be so funny to see how Ryon and Felicia would kill each other!
haha the looks on their face when more raptors popped out was great. he was so relieved and thought it was over lol. if you beat the raptors a guy in the village will give you a grass vest lol. just sayin and it might help if you level up the bone crusher to level 2 an charge up your attack when you hit thraxx in the heart lol.
Classic JRPGs were not easy at all :)
This was one of my first ones that I ever played! Love this game.
I feel bad for laughing so much every time Ryan and Felicia lost. But it was hilarious.
9:20 Lol at the eye roll
Loved this game and the OST! 90's classic. The queen's tower music, tho.
Ohhhhhhh I sooo did not need a visual reference for a dentata. Kudos to Ryan for the awesome Snow Crash reference though.
Christian Akacro Snow Crash reference? When did he reference Snow Crash? I must have missed it.
I mentioned it in my comment. The Dentata, an anti-rape device worn by YT in the book. Basically it gives your vagina teeth. Though as I recall, in the book it was actually an electric shock, but the idea of scaryness down there is the theme. So kudos to him for the instant connection.
Christian Akacro He may have been referring to the movie Teeth, in which the female protagonist/antagonist suffers from Vaginal Dentata.
Either way just horrifying!
I used to love watching this show
Lol I've had every one of those emotions playing that and sadly I never made it to the end either!
"This game is just inside my fucking vagina, just growing like a fucking yeast infection." Felicia... lol
Felicia: "I'm not an angry person." What? O.o Looooove yooooou :)
The name you spelled is Anvss... just saying lol
***** Oh and you guys finally caught on lol
***** It's the ancient Roman spelling.
originalscreenname44 Ancient Anvss The Great.
I grew up on that game! Was flippin awesome. ^_^
Felicia is so done with this game and I'm living for it bahahaha
"I love wearing outfits that match my hair." - Felicia Day, a redhead wearing an orange shirt, ironically mocking a video game character.
I'm surprised there aren't any Supernatural fans here.
Only heartbroken ones...
Miss you Charlie!
Very sad day when charile died
You needed to level grind to around lv 15 or so, get some spells, charge the weapon...
I don't remember that game being that difficult but I also don't remember finishing it. Can't believe it's already 20 Years old.
LOL the Rage is Strong in this episode. :)
I loved this game as a kid, but it does take a lotta grind.
Have you considered Thousand Arms for the Playstation?
I have, sadly, played this game before. I didn't remember it until the dog pulled the dead boy into the bushes to do who knows what to him... Then the memories came flooding back: being flung out of holes... I never got as far as you guys. I quit.
I have SO much love for this game. I will get a tattoo of it some day.
This game was great when I was a kid. It was a harder version of Secret of Mana to me.
Secret of Evermore is actually a very hard game, even more-so early on when you have nothing to rely on, and even then it's hard when you don't know your dog can sniff out items, that the game can be played two-player, and how to abuse the invulnerability mechanic while casting items/spells... so.. yeah.. GL guys :p
So when can we expect Part 2?
This reminds me of the time a few years back when I convinced my girlfriend to play Ultima Online after she had only played MMOs like City of Heroes and WoW. Modern (at the time) MMOs, in other words. If Felicia had been crying by the end as well, that would pretty well sum up the experience. Favorite Felicia episode EVER!
I'd like to suggest the SNES game title "S.O.S.". Story is like Poseidon Adventure. It may be hard to find. This game caused me to pay several late fees to Blockbuster back in the day. You will enjoy it.
I love Felicia Day even more now. COME TO GENCON FELICA DAY!
Hoooooooolishit I actually remember playing this game... I totally forgot about it and it all came back to me when I saw the muscular mutant dog... Shiiiszz
T-shirt link didn't work :( 404 page not found
Ah my favorite childhood game.
When is part 2?
You guys should play Rock n Roll Racing for the SNES. Give you a break from all the frustration.
I loved this game as a kid! It's actually pretty fun once you get a bit further into it. But yes, that first boss if horrible.
Y'all should play Saga Frontier
You guys should play I Ninja, its a game cube game and its pretty great.
my favorite game of all... TIME! even today i dont get how this game was not successful back in the days, i wish it had a sequel os something like that...
9:36 never had a problem before
Any chance of you guys maybe playing DMC 1 or 3 sometime?
Favourite episode by far. Your faces when you died! Ha
this is the game that got me into rpgs one of squaresoft greatest 16bit rpg
They already played Secret of Mana, they should have remembered how the attacks work. Instead of spamming it, you wait for the % under your health bar to fill to do more damage.
One of the best dawgie faces ^__^
Glad they're finally doing a retro game again.
As someone who's beaten this game, I can tell you that you need to grind a fair amount.
scytheajecs And find the alchemist "spells"
I think there is a major flow with this. If you played the original, Secret of Mana you could actually play co-op. Plus it was a better game.
