Came here from Hackaday, but I'm subbed now. This is brilliant! And it's giving me dangerous thoughts about my severely underpowered benchtop Craftsman drillpress. Thanks for sharing!
Most treadmill motors run at a much higher rpm than a drill press. How did you ramp that down with pulleys so you don’t exceed the max speed of the drill press? Thanks, Paul My treadmill motor maxes out at 4,500 rpm and my drill press motor is about 1,750 or so. So I would need to ramp down my 4,500 motor to 1,750 before attaching it.
I didn't see how the middle pulley was used with the treadmill motor and the quill motor. Want to explain that? Looked to me like the treadmill motor was mounted way too low also.
Loved every second of this. I've had a 1940s-era Shopsmith in pieces for years that I haven't tackled because... well, honestly, I had no idea how. Watching you tap in the bearings and everything helped me figure out next steps. I may also consider replacing the stock AC motor with a variable speed DC motor like you did here - super inspiring! One question: What modifications allowed you to use the drill press as a milling machine? Is that dependent on what the variable speed motor allows, or did you also do something to the quill to handle the lateral stress? Thanks!
Have a similar (bit bigger) unit and stuffed it with a 3 phase AC motor fed by a VFD. Way more bottom end poop than the dc motors (which I also have, and used on my CNC mill). Mill never needs to make tons o torque at like 10rpm though. :)
I think this solution won't maintain torque, but will allow a basic (no load) speed adjustment. It is cheaper than a closed loop control or other methods though.

Small motor, very torquey, easy to work with, brushless, very efficient, quiet, and I don't have to deal with AC 3 phase, plus I don't have three phase in my shop
Why are variable speed drill press motors so expensive? I am a 1 arm/legged woodworker, and one of my toughest tasks in changing belt speed on drill press. And the "get a 2 phase and hook a VFD up to it" must be limited to people who do not have "double digit" concussions.
