Very interesting discussion. I grew up in Hong Kong but went to a British school before eventually back in Australia. I still remember my English teacher said when I was primary 1, 'If you want to learn English properly, don't try to translate Cantonese into English'. That advice is extremely useful for life, especially when I later learnt French, Mandarin and Japanese. There are certain things that you cannot simply translate across languages, not just simply because of their syntactic structures, but the deep semantics that rooted in the culture itself.
For example Cantonese culture is not a very lovey duffy kind of culture. Cantonese speakers are mostly pragmatists and very practical. From a young age our elder generation taught us not to express our feelings publicly or it could get us disadvantaged in the adult world. And hence, saying, 'I love you' simply is not a thing. You can say 'I like you' or 'I need you' easily, but 'I love you' simply is not in the bone marrow of Cantonese culture. I still remember once of the first things in Drama School was being asked 'Why are you Cantonese speakers look the exactly same when you like or dislike someone?' Took me some time to put down this cultural burden for acting.
This kind of cultural difference would simply make translation across languages very difficult when these cultures do not share the same cultural similarities in certain concepts or ideas. Another example is the Eskimos has seven words for snow based on their appearance, texture etc. but in Chinese or English it is just snow, as we do not need to figure out what to do under what situation or condition of snow.
I have just started a channel teaching Cantonese in a systematic manner. As I just started it, so still figuring how to make it interesting, while standard and easy to pick up. As I am doing everything by myself while learning how to edit videos, it could look amateurish. If you guys can give me some feedback that would be great :D

I suppose we don't think too much about learning a different language, we just do it.
Besides the language itself, the culture plays such an important part how we present ourselves which makes translation into another language is so very difficult.
We've been thinking about the whole question of acting as a Chinese person. It's like we're crippled right at the onset, being told not to chat back from a very young age, just do what you're told, be forever polite, be even more polite to the older generation... The list goes on and on and on.
How does one express oneself with all these rules?
Last time you mentioned the culture of tipping, which is not common place in Hong Kong. We talk about cultural differences in an upcoming vlog. Thx for the idea!

I agree that you can not simply transliterate everything because to be able to accurately translate the meaning from one language to another, one has to know both languages very well. That's why when most of us move to an English-speaking country, our Chinese has gotten worse, we start thinking in English and forget the Chinese translation. Often time, these days if I have to lookup in the dictionary because I now only know the meaning in English and no longer know the meaning in Chinese.
我住澳洲, 有時候都會和同事交流文化，有些文化差異真的很有趣, 例如: 我們説:Hey you look tired today. 大部分的澳洲人只回一句 : 'Oh Thank you' 除非你真是和這個人很熟，要不然這樣説是很沒有禮貌還會得罪人。Because they think you are telling them you look sh*t today.
但是如果我們説中文的時候這樣説'你今天看起來好累啊' 我們其實想表達關心，意識你想説，是不是病了或沒睡好? 通常會答 對啊昨晚沒睡好etc.
那如果想在英文説這句話就一定要加一句问候- You look tired today, are you okay/is everything okay? 這樣他們就知道你是出於關心。
如果想這句話翻成中文的話- "你今天看起來好累啊，你有没有事/你Ok嗎?" 這對於我們來説感覺有點嚴重，我的樣子真的很糟糕 (要趕快拿個鏡子照照)。
所以生活這裏，一些文化差異導致一時真的得罪人還不知道。但很有趣。

“感激”太誇張... 已經唔係語言問題，文化背景、文化修養等等都好大影響
廣東話最大問題係個tone, 冇乜高低起伏，所以講「我愛你」時好冇feel. 其它語言相對有高音，低音，講出黎聽得舒服啲。
廣東話好直接，每個字一個音，好短，所以好難慢講，係奇怪既🤣🤣🤣

其實英文I Love You不應該直接翻譯為我愛你。尤其是表達親情方面。你應該教小朋友講愛爸爸，愛媽媽。爸爸愛你，媽媽愛你。因為中國人習慣晚輩對長輩用『你』做稱呼系唔禮貌所以大家亦不習慣用。父母可以話爸爸愛你。小朋友應該話愛爸爸，而不是愛你。

It is very true, in some situations there is a difference between Cantonese and English. From my own experience, the only way to speak proper English is to think in English. I find reading a lot of English books also will help. However, since we are not in the elite social class, I guess as long as people understand that’s all it counts.

I grew up in the U.S. so speaking English is of no issue to me. I do like to say phrases like "long time no see", "good, no good?", "eat, no eat?" just to be Chinese. 😆

Hi Sarah and Jason @mr Chan, yes, is true, sometimes, cantonese and English translation is different. English meaning pronunciation and cantonese pronunciation meaning is slightly different. Which is true.

To me, when I speak cantonese, and mixed with English. So it's basically has been mixed and match. This is call Malaysian English and cantonese 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hi, I thought you two should be truly bilingual, where you can think both in English and Cantonese at the same time. I have no doubt your kids will also have that capability but they must taught to do that and continue to do that while they are still young.

Jason needs to improve his English speaking accent(British or America). Sarah is fine but I cannot understand Jason. In real life, English speaking has a certain intonation and Jason has not master English speaking intonation, typical Hong Kongers. I can switch from American English, mandarin, and Cantonese seamlessly and all the nuances. Natural languages are not directly translatable one for one so you must paraphrase, even between mandarin and Cantonese. Due to academic requirement, I had to study French and German, whose grammars are even more diverse from that of Chinese or English. So I am keenly aware of having to translate every sentence with a long pause, an unpleasant feeling. I also had to learn English as a child and my mother tongue is Cantonese. Somehow, it is much easier as a child. Now, American English is my forte even though I started speaking Cantonese and Cantonese alone. The real reason why you guys have problem is that you do not really have an English speaking environment and I do. I lived in the US for 62 years so I am truly bilingual whereas you guys are just amaturish when it comes to English; it is obvious. Cantonese still is your dominant language and English is only secondary. When Hong Kongers speak English, it is too choppy and too flat, just Chinklish really.

We both grew up in England and Australia, so we're both quite proficient in English. We all have our accents and trying to understand another accent that's not your own is sometimes difficult.
Americans can be very expressive when they talk, but that's not the only way to communicate.
