Agreeing with that “you go first” is common and even friendly. “After you” is quite honorific! “Got it” & “no problem” work if you deal with a friendly boss. If you were to deal with your company’s president or equivalent, “understood”, “roger that”, “copy that”.
I think you exaggerated it a little bit. I've asked many people in the UK, and the phrase 'you go first' sounds totally fine to them, even though it is imperative.

Thanks for replying to my message about 2 months ago. You are probably right. For my own generation, only a VERY small % of parents and grandparents spoke English at home. So we did NOT get much chance to listen to English at all. Similarly, we only wrote in English at school, and only during some of the lessons. So, Singaporeans should be better in both listening comprehension and written English as you said. But it should be TOTALLY DIFFERENT now. But now of course I am NOT familiar with the current situation in HK / Singapore.

I can't agree with the ideas concerning the differences between "sit"(v.) and "seat" (v.) mentioned here. The verb "seat" is more specific in describing having a position(e.g. chair) to sit while the verb "sit" concerns more about the action (you can sit on the floor or anywhere that might not be a "seat" (n.)). Besides, many of those mentioned here are quiet far from what native speakers use in conversation.
You go first is Command Mood. e.g. Melody work faster! 'work' here is imperative verb, no 's'. You first is verbal informal, can't stand alone to act as complete sentence, but is common in response to question. Who will go first? You replied, "you (go) first"
Too funny. Just the other day I was on line for the restroom at a restaurant and the person ahead didn’t try one of the doors and it was unoccupied. But I did and before I went in, I asked her, “Do you want to go first?” She declined, “No, you’re fine.” I think the context of how you use the phrase matters. In this case I thought nothing of its use and I know she was not offended. But Americans are less disciplined vs the Brits about language. Also we are a country of immigrants, we are understanding of non native speakers.

I would use that with my kids or my staff who’s repeatedly disobeyed my instructions, but totally not with my boss if I want to keep my job. 😂

"Did I make myself clear?" may sound very demanding and rude, especially when people say "Do I make myself crystal clear?". "Is there anything I can further elaborate on?" is so much better.
其實”I know” 不是你所形容的不禮貌。in some occasions like “it has been raining for a week”, you can say “I know” which means “tell me about it” or to agree with what the person just said. “I know” is extremely common in the daily conversation.

"did I make myself clear" is still too bossy as a reply. "do you copy" amongst same level. I never have to speak to anyone higher in my work so I cannot give an alternative how to say it politely to "the boss"

很有用,最近刚来到加拿大,用英文跟同学交流不明白可以说“did I make myself clear?”,总是跟人同时走到一扇门,可以说“after you”. 另外也经常听到客服说“I'll be with you shortly”
I think "you go first" is quite common and not offensive. Especially when you are in line, but want someone behind you to go before you.
Yes I am talking English here. Maybe u can say, "you can go first" which implies there is a choice. Again it's really common in North America

英文要活學活用,不能死記,要跟外籍人士(英文為母語)多溝通,才有進步及學會講正確英語。可惜大部分香港學生害怕在課堂跟老師及同學講英語,遇上外籍老師就更加害怕回答提問,英文水平遠遠落後新加坡華人,因為他們多用英文互相溝通。雖然星洲人講英文有馬來西亞(馬拉)口音,但他們能講較港人流利的英語,因此很多外國人喜歡到那邊工作或旅遊。
其實英語在不同地區已成為當地生活用語 甚至口音。譬如你所講的新加坡人英語環境。日常本土化英語singlish 就是常用you go first。 就是melody 老師說的不正確。但在當地是常態。 英文已演變在每個地區有不同色彩。亦不能夠說完全錯的。相反英國在當地不同地區的英文有不同口音字眼甚至聽不明白。至於新馬人,除了雙語人才,因當地集合不同人種和方言,大多數當地人的語文水準只是半桶水。
@@jl6735 本人到過新加坡及馬來亞多次,亦常於電視看到當地華人講英語的水平,認為確較一般香港人佳、較流利,口音當然會有。本人四十年前有幸到加拿大讀書,結識了很多新馬華人同學及朋友,當時已經有此概念,因為他們彼此用英文溝通(部分用華語或家鄉話),但港人大部分用粤語溝通。另外,大部分香港人(尤其是初到步的)只跟香港人來住(相信是同聲同氣),看香港(中文)刊物,睇香港電視的節目(粤語),經常只在唐人街商店渡日,甚少接觸當地西方文化,因此他們的英文水平沒有大進步。
@@denistang7595 不能完全同意你的說法. 我在加拿大某大學當英語科助教, 學生中有本地生也有留學生. 當中不少香港留學生的英語水平很高. 星馬留學生最大問題是他們不肯下功夫去改掉他們那濃重口音, 而且説英語時加上中文語氣. 若要比較香港生和星馬生的口語, 我認為香港生較優勝.
I also know quite a few people from Singapore and Malaysia, they think their English is ‘more accurate’ than even Oxford English.
But quite obviously Hong Kong students speak much better English than they.

學生的英文水平,多受老師影響,尤其是中學。本人見很多上電視講話的政府高官(署長、局長或司長級),英文水平真是不敢恭維,只有在律政處的大法官,英文才有外國人(英美)的水平。其中主要原因,是大部分中學的老師,尤其是英文科,並非在外國修讀學位。雖然課本是英文,大部分老師用中文教授,因此無助學生的英文水平。只有極少數著名英文中學(band one),才全部科目用英文授課。本人是退休中學老師,因此較熟悉香港教育。

"did I make myself clear" is still too bossy as a reply. "do you copy" amongst same level. I never have to speak to anyone higher in my work so I cannot give an alternative how to say it politely to "the boss"
Sometime being rude is necessary to emphasize your views or make your stance clear.
