  • Watching coin roll hunting videos on TH-cam is what got me back into coin collecting, and it's what eventually got me to start my own TH-cam channel. Most of the videos I watched involved coin roll hunting half dollars in the United States. The thrill of findind silver, or a cool DDO or other die variety was exciting. But it isn't something you can readily do here in Canada. Or so I thought! My bank called me and let me know they had 8 rolls of Canadian half dollars, as well as some "silver" dollars. I ran to the bank straight away to pick them up. So here, goes... my FIRST EVER Canadian Half Dollar Hunt!!

    Went to Canada with my folks in 1964. I was 15. Went to banks. Both halves and dollars were scarce! Did pick up a few here and there. Did find some better 1c to 25c in rolls. Best coin was a BU 1937 dime. I still own it.

    Very cool hunt. I would have never thought to even ask for 50¢ pieces anymore. They used to be found in circulation when I was a kid for sure. I also lived in the States for about 5 years and there was a cigar store in the city I lived in, back when I used to smoke. His schtick was to give 50¢ pieces and $2 bills (both pretty uncommon) to customers in their change and it was also customary to tip barbers with a $2 bill.

    • @CADRollHunter
      @CADRollHunter  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very cool. I knew that the $2 bills were uncommon and we got some in change when visiting Florida once. (They probably knew we were tourists and the locals wouldn't accept them!!).

      I think, generally there are fewer errors and varieties than in American coins, but then again, there are probably lots of varieties I'm just now aware of. But, I agree you definitely need a Canadian book!! Check out lighthousecanada.ca and use my discount code CRH20 to get 20% off!

    Nice video! You're so lucky to still be able to get 50 cents and dollars. Everywhere I ask, they say they have to send it back for destruction. And as you say, you always have the potential chance that someday these will be silver. Also you always can get some of 1987 and up (other than 2002) that are all low mintage. It also reminds me my youth. I still remember when my mother gave me and my sister, one 1981 dollar and one 1981 50 cents each, when the came out. The next year, she gave us a 1867-1982 Constitution commemorative, and then in 1984 she gave us a Jacques Cartier dollar. I was surprised to discover, years later, that 1982 and 1984 also exist as Voyageur, and I was happy to add those to my collection. Lots of memories revived seeing you go through them.

    Hey James! Great hunt 😮 I just went through 600 50 cent pieces from my bank and found a ton of varieties and NIFCs! I use the same microscope as you do and I’ve had some issues, namely the focus is only on part of the coin and yours is focused clearly over the whole coin. Also, the light is always changing as if it’s calibrating when I move the coin around or my finger gets in the view. Have you had any issues like this and if so, any advice?

    • @CADRollHunter
      @CADRollHunter  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm not sure about the focus issues, I just tend to get it focussed at the distance I want, and it seems to be fine (unless I bump it). But, I do experience issues with the lighting, just like you've described. I try to keep my fingers out of the frame, if I can, and give it a moment to re-adjust.

      That's really too bad - they said the same thing to me recently about old paper money. Also, just a tip - don't ever mention the word silver to bank tellers. Most of them don't know the difference between silver and clad, so it's to your advantage to not bring it up.

      @@CADRollHunter that makes sense. Just like the US which still makes half dollars but they are usually made for coin sets, collectors rolls and bags. Commonly referred to as NIFC (Not Intended For Circulation) coins. You rarely find them in circulation anymore

    • @CADRollHunter
      @CADRollHunter  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MathewPoynter Yes, pretty much the same thing here. In the early 80s, they were still minting several million a year, but by the late 80s the mintages dropped to only 2-3 hundred thousand per year, mostly in sets or special mint rolls for collectors.

      @@CADRollHunter same with the US. Now you can still get rolls of half dollars from the bank but they normally don’t carry them. I did recently get three rolls of them.
