  • This piece is part of INNER ASTRONOMY, a full length cantata for strings and treble voices. Like all pieces in the larger work, the poetry comes from Randall Pease, the composer’s father, and captures moments in his life where he was struggling with addiction recovery, dementia, and terminal cancer. The poetry and overlapping melodies of this piece create a meditative and introspective atmosphere that brings to life a search out of internal darkness as one calls out for love and redemption.
Audio Credit - Performed by Molly Pease, Kathryn Shuman, Sharon Chohi Kim and Lauren Davis, vocals, Rachel Iba and Nigel Deane, violin; Patrick Benkhe, viola, Tal Katz, cello and Miller Wrenn, bass, 2019 - Fahad Siadat, Conductor

    Lyrics:
    As if the sun
    disguised by clouds
    its sight not found
    by an addict
    since visual is
    only what’s real.
    chrysalis
    blossoms this
    fragrant wing
    where sun sings
    into play
    this one day,
    only here.
    invisible
    impossible.
    him all alone
    no heart known.
    buried in skin
    dark clouds blind him,
    makes permanent
    spirit absence.
    a willing prayer
    under layers
    of disbelief -
    God set me free
    from material
    to spiritual.
    - Randall Pease
