Cut my teeth at Union Grove.. how long ago is when the Olympics of Drag Racing saw the first 6 sec ETs from Nitro Funny Car. I was standing at the 60 when (I believe the ChiTown Hustler) got the first 6.99. Nice cool, sticky air.. slicks warm. Yeah I AM that old and they can't take the gunpowder memory outa your nose.
When someone gets killed and cut in half at the starting line. I guess then they will keep the Short Bus riders back behind the wall. Stupidity knows no bounds !!!
I guess we should design a bubble for everyone to live in so no one can ever get physically hurt. Treat everything and everyone exactly the same so there is no diversity. Natural food no chemicals or machinery that's made for processing. Just people and animals to live in a place where we all live in a worry free utopia....aww...how beautiful......pusscake
It's Sunday Sunday Sunday Union Grove Illinois come all come now to the greatest Great Lakes dragaway home of the Midwest fastest doorslammer in all of the Chicagoland area as a note I was the first one to do a burn out at the opening ceremonies of the very first Harley Rendezvous in Milwaukee and the drag races at Union Grove presented by American Motorcycle Racing Association as they open ceremonies with running the stock XL Harley-Davidson Sportster class . it was my girl friends 1982 Milwaukee first first Harley-Davidsons off the assembly line after the sale of AMF ..I am a seasoned amateur drag racer from the sixties but this day after rolling out of a very Smokey burnout I'm staring at 50,000 Harley bikers screaming yeah right on get it and now I got to do it with big butterflies in my stomach for the very first time . So I don't have any idea if I'm going to grab traction and flip over backwards right there on the line or stall the motor either way I'm going to look pretty ridiculous as I had just installed a new set of those Dunlop road racing looking tires was that 45° tread pretty far apart slick in the middle and very very sticky plus I had taken the 51 tooth off the rear and replaced it with 48 teeth to lower the RPMs on the all day ride North that we had just taken as my girlfriend had decided that we would not race the Sportster and just ride together as she was riding her 1982 Sturgis lowrider while my 68 Electra Glide was broken she allowed me to ride the Sportster from Terre Haute to Milwaukee and then all the sudden race the Sportster she's screaming race the Sportster. this is now her new decision at the track.. Now I got a lunch this damn thing geared tall so first gear is like taking off in 2nd and with a brand-new very sticky rear tire but I had avoided the water box pulling up to the line but no no no no the track official says I must make the mandatory burnout. took the left lane my competition in the right lane was a 1979 AMF crxl Harley-Davidson Sportster Cafe Racer which with no problem i immediately put back on the trailer turning about a 13 second quarter mile at a hundred as we both basically had the exact same Ironhead engine of 1000 cc's I always thought that the Harley Cafe Racer was not properly tuned as he didn't have a chance ..so while turning down the return Lane in front of the grandstands I'm getting Applause from a 50000 Harley-Davidson bikers doing the wave until second round I had some major difficulties. As the next contender in stock Harley-Davidson XL Sportster was seven times world champion of all stock Harley Davidson XL Sportster who at halfway down the track ground pounded by me faster than a rice rocket turning me into a spectator as I felt the Thunder from his exhaust as he turned over a hundred and fifteen miles per hour in the quarter running something like in the low 12 ish it was the best defeat I've ever had in my life and front of the front row closest ringside seat to one extremely fast Harley for a few seconds
The DeSoto body style car is a '59 replica..wish they went all the way and made it a total Adventurer style with the gold inset, gold front grille and golden louvered hubcaps at least on the front wheels. But still..245 ain't bad kiddo....
I can't believe that no one today knows that there was once a totally separate DeSoto car division of Chrysler corporation. In rank of lowest cost to top cost car the line up was: lowest cost: Plymouth, then Dodge then DeSoto (sort of the Buick level in the Mopar line up) then the Chrysler which sort of competed in the top Buick and Oldsmobile price range and of course at the top was the Imperial. All these cars had several models within the car division. AND DeSoto had an elite level called the Adventurer which was like $4400. At the time. Which was BIG money for a mid range car. But the Adventurer in "57 was a world beater knockout!!! And in '59 it had a slightly scaled down version of the 392 Hemi...WOW
Yeah, it's not to busy, theres a sand trap and catch fence... Great Lakes Dragway is the oldest operating 1/4 mile in the U.S., probably the world, and it's been that setup forever.. it's one of my favorite places in the world.
door slammers Don t ya just lov'e m no tree but stage and green steel body cars faster than the pro stocks of the 70's like Sox & Martin dick Landy Dodge Nicky Chevrolet and the fastest Fords ever Bob Glidden but today it's the Door Slammers taking Center ring
left lane has always been the preferred lane there the dew rolls in on the right lane first under the billboards even in the heat of the day left lane has always been more consistent !
