Best small boat review I’ve seen in years. So many “reviews” don’t even demonstrate stability of a hull. Well done Usual review is just a couple of rednecks measuring top speed 😅
I did a major modification along the same lines on my six metre glass boat using extruded polystyrene and glassing over using epoxy resin. I doubled the width of the chine flat and added around 100 kg of additional buoyancy to each side. I got at least a 15 % increase in WOT speed due to the additional chine flat width. I use this boat out wide in up to 2 metre swell and she has become a very capable boat. I also added a ballast tank up from for when motoring into a head sea and pump it out for the following sea.
You wont regret it mate. I've been using it so much lately with 4 people on board. The boat used to feel sketchy with 4 POB now I have no worries at all with them. You can have people roll in to go snorkelling and the boat doesn't dangerously list like it used to.
Yeh mate I'm dirty I didn't do it earlier. Absolutely no negatives from my point of view. I was most worried about extra drag in the water at speed but it actually seems to do the opposite and provide lift.
First of all incredible review in real world, realistic conditions. 3 years later how's it holding up? foam sun damaged / degraded? Any significant chucks taken out by hooks / sticks?
Hey mate, thanks for the feedback - no one wants to see boats tested on a glassout. They are surprisingly durable. I've got some good chunks from beach launching collisions with the trailer, but apart from that its still good. I do an annual coat of tyre shine on the top side which they recommend to stop it from drying out too much and I also store undercover where ever possible. I would say if you took care of them 10years service life no worries. Cheers, ORT
yes great vid I have had a dart for a number of years have a Tohatsu 20hp as well best ever and way more stable as I have the weight built in the floor I fish out from wolf rock in many conditions the best enjoy
Excellent review of your tinnie and the great benefits of fitting the "collar" to the tinnie. I'm just beginning to learn as much as l can about all thing's relating to boating. Being a complete novice and wanting to get back into fishing but this time around, using a boat and of course for pleasure/recreation. Don't know yet whether to get a tinnie or a fibreglass boat. I will seek the advice of others as to which type would be best for my intended use. I want a boat for lakes/dams, rivers and coastal bay fishing only, I have no desire at all to venture out into "open waters". New subscriber, to your channel. Regards, Brian.
Hi Brian, thanks for the feedback! I wish you all the best in getting back on the water. If you don't have any intention of hitting anything too rough then its hard to go past the tinnies. Lighter, harder to damage, often cheaper and easier to maintain. Cheers, ORT.
Good review. Boat punching above it's weight and I bet that water was chopier than looked in the video. I'm sure youve push it further and bit curious to know if you have manged to get any water over the bow. Cheers and thanks for posting.
Thanks mate. Yeh the vids never do the weather justice, particularly on the gopro with image stabilisation. I've definitely been out in much worse, and you can push it hard directly into an oncoming wave and I honestly have never had one come over the bow. Reason being is that the harder you come down, the more up pressure against the massive reverse chine in the collar which pushed you up. It's just a ripper of a design. I'm sure you could do it if you went and charged into a breaking wave but in normal driving conditions, it doesn't happen. Cheers, ORT
Thanks for the feedback! Yes so far it has been durable. If you hit it hard on the trailer or with anchor then expect to take chunks out of it but its just cosmetic more than anything. The hull thickness has been no problem at all. No visible flex and I've bashed it into some pretty rough weather. Cheers, ORT.
Dude, you CAN NOT go wrong with a boat collar ! I got pat to put one on my 4.1 Brooker and transformed it from a quite unsafe (randomly broached ),wet, harsh tinny into a dry, soft, super stable and predictable weapon.
@shaneyule3484 I’m about to install a collar on my 4.1 Brooker! Currently the boat is super dangerous, but hoping to change that with a collar. Did you get the max collar or slimline? Cheers.
Hey Craig, I've got to be honest I don't really handline. I would think if you're using heavy line it wouldn't really cut in it to - the outer layer of the collar is a hard layer, not soft foam. I've had plenty of braid rub against it when big fish have gone under the boat and no issue. Cheers, ORT
They look awesome. Just one question if you don't mind? When you were turning fast it looked as though it was cornering a lot flatter. Do you think it would increase the risk of it rolling over if the outside was hit by a wave or large chop?
It corners like its on rails. Whether I think it would be more risky to rolling, no I don't. Not in the slightest. The massive reverse chine would make it near on impossible to roll unless you literally got dumped by a breaking wave. The biggest risk I see with the collar through corners, and I am guilty of it, is throwing your passengers around. Reason being is that when driving from the tiller you can really throw it into corners and it handles so well but you forget about the poor passenger up front and them getting thrown to one side. Hope this helps. Cheers.
Great video! Do you think the collar will make it more cumbersome to load as a rooftopper? And have ridden in an Explorer? I'm curious what difference the ride is in the Dart. Cheers
Hi mate. I've actually just done a review vid of my rooftop loader that shows the tinny loading with a collar - check it out on my channel. Zero impact with the boat collar with my loader. I haven't personally ridden in an explorer, but have chatted with guys in camp sites that have had them. They stayed home when I would happily go out. Feedback is they are stable, but bang too much in any serious chop. Cheers, ORT.
Hey guys, great vid, I’m waiting for my max collar right now. Can I ask if those rod holders up front are just pvc or are they an off the shelf? Any chance of a closeup pic? Thanks!
Hey James, they are just PVC mate. Cut to size for the boat and then fixed with alloy rivets. They work a treat for travelling but I wouldn't trust them for trolling with any heavy gear. Cheers, ORT.
Hey mate im pretty sold on getting some for my stacer 3.6 since i want to be out in the bay abit mud harrys etc so do you have to drill into the hull? I dont really want to make holes low in the hull... but i also dont want a bigger boat because i tow with a sedan and i like my little boat and ots cheap on fuel with my yami 15hp
Hi Jay, 100% you drill through the hull - BUT 100% do not worry about it. They do not leak and they actually have level floatation with the collar on. I've left the bungs out and gone for a fish and it wont sink. Check out my newest install video if you want to see whats involved with the install. FYI I'd be reluctant to head out to Harrys in anything but perfect weather in a 3.6 tinny without a collar, its a decent run home when the weather turns. Cheers, ORT.
Hi Harry, Yes I had to raise the skids on the trailer by about 100mm on each side so that the collar clears the guards. It would depend on each individual trailer but the instructions also remind people to do this to avoid the collar fouling. Cheers, ORT
How much does it reduce the splash.. on the ningaloo reef coming back in the arvos i always get smashed by splash to the point where i can hardly see. Would love to here what kind of difference it made
Hi Jordan, its markedly improved on every angle. What happens is where the point of the hull parts the water and it normally throws the water up and gets blown back into your face it instead hits the collar and is deflected down. When it is really choppy you will still get some back at the tiller when cutting across it on the port or starboard bow, but if you're on the beam or straight on the bow the spray is no existent. I was pleasantly surprised with the difference.
Please help me get intouch with this company for the boat collars. I live on Long Island, ny, USA Im wondering if they ship over seas to USA. I need a pair of these badly. Ive emailed them twice. No answer back yet.
Hi Georie, i just got in contact with them via their email info@boatcollar.com.au. I recently purchased another one and there was a wait for stock so maybe thats why? They've been really good with comms everytime I've contacted them. Hope you can get a hold of them. Cheers.

Hi John, I've been in one spot since install so I can't comment on the impact on the roof. I have no reason to believe it will create much/any difference though. The weight would be 10-15kg depending on the boat you are fitting it to.

Usual review is just a couple of rednecks measuring top speed 😅
Great video. Nice to see someone actually test it in rough water. Cheers and 2 thumbs up from Canada.

Yuuup, I installed on my 3.7 Stacer in 2014, gr8 life saver many times, sold the boat in 2019 to first looker without dropping the price.
It really makes a big boat out of a little tinny.
I have a semi tri hull small boat. Seems to make the boat very similar to how mine performs.
Same sort of principal I guess. It's always interested me why there aren't more trihulls from the factory. Cheers, ORT
