There is a research station, a small building in Antarctica. Compared to Mars, the South Pole is a tropical paradise. You can breath the air, water is plentiful, you won't be fried by radiation, and if there is a problem, help is not far away. Despite this, residents at the station must be rotated out every few months as severe psychological problems soon arise. Living on Mars would be a miserable experience.
Why compare it to Antarctica and not with people living in space? we already have people living in space and the limiting factor on why they cannot stay more than a few months is lack of gravity and that is not the issue on Mars. Also, you compare Mars with today's Earth's worst pace, but in the event of nuclear winter, all planet could be inhabitable on surface and living underground here might be worse than living on Mars on the surface in some domes, of course. Also, we're lucky to have Mars as a next door planet, because if Jupiter or Saturn would be next, those are not "very hard", but impossible to colonize. Anyway, we should absolutely give it a try as being confined to eating, pooping and replicating without advancing has 100% chance of extinction on long term.
@@Daniela-pr7rz Jupiter and Saturn have plenty of moons that could be just as colonizable as Mars tho. The problem is that with current technology the trip to the outer planets is still too long. As of your nuclear winter point, even in the worst case scenario it would not render our entire planet uninhabitable, but it could make life miserable for most people. Now what you need to understand about living in a lifeless planet like Mars is that the domes and living conditions would be super cramped and stressful, even privacy is a luxury and even the oxygen you breathe is accounted for. Going "out on a walk" to clear your head is not a possibility either unless you're in a spacesuit. And you can't just go back to Earth either, since the trip home is 7 months long at best. I absolutely want humanity to thrive and reach for the planets and the stars, but we have to be realistic and cautious about it. It's not just a matter of giving it a try, but improving our society and tech to the point that colonizing the solar system will feel like a cakewalk.
@@Gabriel-br4qe These moons are even cooler than Mars. Several of Jupiter's moons are located in Jupiter's radiation belts and have such high radiation that humans will only survive minutes before they will die.
@@abstuli It's true, however there are also some of these moons that could be reasonable candidates. Jupiter's moon Ganymede for example has a natural magnetosphere, the best radiation shielding that a space body can provide. But the trip to Jupiter is 3.5 years at the very least with current technology. Good enough for unmanned missions but terrible for crewed ones.
Yes, I agree. We should start by terraforming Australia, as it is large, arid and has a Mars like geography with a relatively small population of 27 million people.

There is a lot of oxygen there but it’ll take tons of energy to break the chemical bonds that binds the oxygen to other elements such as iron. However humans get very sick and will die if pure oxygen is breathed for extended periods. Earth air is 80% nitrogen and that is rare on mars.

I was too, I think his fan base has shrunk to a fraction of its peak. Every time he misses a deadline, more people dive into his timelines and realize how ridiculous they are. I think Destin from smarter every day did a talk where he talked about refueling for a mission to mars and the 20+ launches it would take that shaved off a pretty good chunk of die hard. Thunderfoot and common sense skeptic have gotten pretty popular debunking a lot of what elon has claimed and shown how he spins his losses point by point. I think that's why he is betting on Trump so hard, he is desperate to keep the funding coming. If Trump doesn't save him, he will probably have issues with nasa.
He may be factually incorrect, perhaps over confident and a bit over ambitious, but he is not lying. He is out there as a pioneer and if someone can point out a factual error or have a better idea, let it be knowm but to label a renaissance man of out of our time a liar is pretty low in my opinion. He is trying and bringing out a conversation over it. Earth will die one day either by natural causes or by man. Mankind must not be in one place. Nuclear war, Asteroid could end humans if we are all just on one rock.
No one born in the next 100 years who doesn't become a super top expert in something related to working in space or a colonisation program will have to worry about ever setting foot on Mars. Ordinary people won't be going there for centuries, if ever. Of the experts who *do* go some day, many of them will be driven mad by life on a totally inhospitable world. Constant worry about radiation, temperature, the integrity of shelter, the availability of food and water plus the insane winds and sand storms, the differences in day length and gravity, the confinement to small spaces with other people, the near-impossibility of real-time communication with Earth and the inability to leave at will is going to annihilate even the toughest professionals. Hell - working in Antarctica for a year is enough to send a lot of people off the deep end. Mars will be like that dialled up well past 11.
What? I believe a million people at Mars will happen next 80 years or so. I believe in Elon Musk a lot. Look how far Space X has come. Breaking records after records each year and are growing so quick that nobody else can keep up. To then get those space ships to Mars and back safely is the hard part. But once that’s under control with minimal risks and cheaper transportation I believe humans building its first city on mars is 100 % gonna happen
So we aren’t trying to fix things on earth? And why can’t we do both? The scientific breakthroughs made by colonising mars would most definitely help solve problems here on earth.
“A magnetic shield is critical to preserving Earth's atmosphere and habitability. Without it, Earth would resemble Mars.” All the problems pointed out could be solved but it would be a colossal waste of time and effort since Mars lacks an Earth like magnetic shield.
We may not be able to build a planet scale magnetic shield. But it is easy to build a local magnetic shield. Go google "CREW HaT: A Magnetic Shielding System for Space Habitat".
There is one particular problem not mentioned here, that we can't even solve on Earth, psychological distress. There is a reason why the longest stay on the ISS is less than one year, and it isn't just the bone density degradation, Scientists are effectively worked to exhaustion every day, to keep them from thinking too much about where they are, and how precarious their survival is. We have a base in the Antarctic, which has a breathable atmosphere, gravity, water, rescue solutions just a few hours away, but the scientists have to be rotated out every few months because of severe psychological distress. When the resupply and shift change flights are delayed due to bad weather, there is an emergency stash of alcohol at the base, and the scientists are advised to get blind drunk, every day, until relief arrives.
Not only is it a lie, but it's a stupidity, too. What are we doing planning to live on Mars if planet Earth hasn't fully been explored yet. Lol. We're still not even type I civilization, and we're already thinking about settling on another planet? What are we doing? Fix our home planet first before moving to the next.
What can I say, Human are selfish. People who have the power to change our world don't care about our world. They only care about themselves. And let me add that human are also dumb. Well most people are anyway. Anyone who is willing to spent 10 mins to learn anything about the science behind space travel will immediately call out Elon Musk bullshit. But for some dumb reason, people idolize him and will believe anything he said.
That 100 people in a starship is another ridiculous claim by Musk. Given the available volume for habitation, storage of food other supplies and basic stuff like that precious oxygen people rather like, not to mention the shielding against radiation, 10 people sounds more likely and only if you’re willing to sit in really cramped conditions for a year or two. 10 people at best if you want to get them to Mars in a more or less healthy state.
Elon is away with the fairies. He’s not the genius his disciples like to think he is. He’s an entrepreneur that took a few lucky turns in life. As long as we got egocentric leaders around the world thinking about how to get richer rather then saving the planet then this choice to colonize mars is the best option. Test: Build a self-sustaining city deep in Antarctica. Prove it's possible there. Work out the tech and techniques there. If you can't do that in Antarctica you sure as hell can't do it on Mars. Even exploring Mars with humans, much less building a self-sustaining base, if possible will almost certainly be accomplished by the Chinese. Such an endeavor requires societal, civilizational level resources, commitment and collective cooperation. Resources and cultural values the Chinese have, and that we in the West unfortunately do not. Our resources are hoarded by wealthy douchebags (like Musk) and far too many worship the supposed (though never proven) creativity of libertarian techbros (like Musk, again). Yet they somehow always end up sucking up public resources and contracts (despite their libertarianism and supposed rugged individualism) while very often failing to even meet the terms of the contract. For example, Musk having taken public dollars to send an orbiter around the Moon and back. A project that is years behind schedule and he that he is not even remotely close to producing the rocket and capsule tech (so still unproven he can even do it) for necessary. The "Dear Moon" trip was supposed to happen in 2025 iirc, yet Musk can't even get his Starship rocket to a successful Earth orbit without losing control and blowing up with ZERO payload. Musk is a fraud. Maybe the biggest fraud in human history. And a very likely a literal criminal fraud in regards to his promises regarding Tesla cars/trucks and FSD. A subject for another rant... ;)
There already is a base in Antarctica, it is manned throughout the year, but the scientists have to be rotated out every few months otherwise they develop severe psychological problems. The reason that scientists on the ISS are rotated off every few months is also not just because of the bone degredation from low gravity, but also due to the psychological stress. It turns out that humans are ill prepared for long periods of isolation, even on their home planet.
There is actually nothing sinister behind it. Scientists often exaggerate possibilities to receive more funding. This is very normal and even a good thing because it accelerates the process of achieving their goals. Imagine if someone told you that something would take hundreds of years to accomplish-would you be interested in funding or even researching it to make it happen? Probably not, because you would never see it with your own eyes. However, it is still better to be optimistic about these things. Elon Musk is passionate about his work, and as a result, he is going to live a life full of passion, which is certainly a life worth living. ----- Without optimism in the human's body we would never be as far as we are today

This person is not contributing anything to society, he not only wants to save earth nor go to mars. He will make views of his video and enjoy life.
I'm really glad you made this video. Elon isn't the designer of most of his companies, he's just a slightly Autistic capitalist building 💰 from his tribes of real creators. His change politically and his statements since 2014 tainted my opinion enough to realize he's not that learnedly smart or people smart, instead more like a salesman trying to pitch things to fool his fanbase rather than to really advance humanity. (Gwen Shotwell is the real reason SpaceX has become the top launch provider and trusted by the US government and military.) A few O'Neal cylinders rather a million walking dead on poisonous Martian soil by 2029 would better serve to save humanity from his greatest hits list, and Starship could be a very big part: First by making a moon base to both exploit resources and learn how to better survive in space, then helping gather asteroids for O'Neal cylinder resources and building them in less time (2060 to 2100) than terraforming Mars (starting 2035 to 3200}, and for less 💰. All this from research and IMHO.

After his betrayal of Ukraine by switching off Starlink just before they could drone strike the Black Sea Fleet and piers he cost literally thousands of Ukrainian lives, military and civilians, by letting the missile ships escape to later attack far inland. That to me was his final flaw ... He fears Putin's propaganda so badly he runs away, thinks he's saving humanity when he is enabling a force that will kill millions of not stopped.

His Tesla people he has treated like indentured servants, the staff that made guardrails for Twitter like excess overhead, Boring company a rich-people express lane demo, and PayPal another stolen PR hype that he was barely a part of. His NDAs are vicious, he's used women (Grimes, even some employees) as incubators for his legacy (except for Amber Herd, who refused and broke up, breaking his heart.) SpaceX only survived and prospered because he HAD to hire and pass control to Gwen, Bill Gerstenmaier, and Tom Mueller to make it and understand how to sell it to NASA and the Pentagon. That's what summed him up in a nutshell... A fearful opportunist who the Pentagon should force to agree to work with national security or be excluded from contracts until he does.

People need to stop simping for Elon
Before you can even send one starship to Mars you have to build a habitat where they can live and work and grow food because they're going into an absolutely hostile and toxic environment. Otherwise they'll just have to stay in the starship until they run out of food, water and air.
People: hell yeah im going to mars!
Me: nah earth is better for life
Going to Mars is an ambitious goal but starship certainly won't be the vehicle to bring humans there. He asking one vehicle to do to much, this isn't a trip to the moon we are talking about. It is 8 months one way in the best case and starship is not built for interplanetary travel, it is made to get large amounts of mass into orbit. You wouldn't use a crane to move people across the Atlantic Ocean would you?
Video fordot counted refulig starships......
Absolutely ludicrous. Ask someone who's been on the ISS for a couple spins what they think of musk. You first bro, and good riddance.
Mars is hell without us. We do not need to go there and mess it up.
The first English colonist died almost from hunger. The Native Americans helped them to improve the soil. 👉The initial required material must come from Earth. The rest will be locally extracted on Mars.
Yeah but you didn’t absorb what was said in the video. It’s not that simple.
Elon forgot to tell us , the travel thing , thats already solved , we just get Scotty to beam us to mars , no problems 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.
Using earth's resources to build civilization on Mars 😅😅😂
why not?
@@zhchbob Because its infinitely less efficient than just using and reusing our existing resources better. If you can develop a robot to fly to mars and search for minerals that same robot can mine through a landfill for minerals for a fraction of a fraction of the cost.
Wearing it on a necklace wouldn't be good for my job either, because it would get caught onto boxes
By 2050, we may not even have landed another 12 people on the moon !
After the dream about space travel is broken, will the human appreciate and respect the environment they are living in more?
Of course not. People will do what is convenient for them; regardless of what's at stake.
Listening to musk's brilliant ideas I immediately changed course and decided not to become addicted to mind altering substances.
Elon musk seems to have the same form of reckless stupidity seen in Stockton Rush

We haven't been back because the money isn't worth it.
We don’t know really how many people would be willing to go to mars until it’s actually offered to them. Everyone sent there would need to have a trade because becoming self sustainable is very important, manufacturing and construction would be key

@@TH-camrcolz There is a reason why scientists get rotated off the ISS every few months, and why they are worked to exhaustion every day, to prevent them from dwelling on their isolation, the constant danger present, and the fact that it could be many months before a rescue could be attempted if things go seriously wrong. There is a base in Antarctica that is manned throughout the year, but scientists have to be rotated off every few months, because of the severe psychological distress that they suffer, and this base is on Earth, with gravity, a breathable atmosphere, plenty of water, and rescue just a few hours away.
Nobody will have a trade there because it will be impossible to live. Human bodies need our gravity. It’s only one third there so our bodies won’t survive long, even if they can survive the long trip there.

I think Mask is just talking all this BS to motivate the story. For now his only real concern is getting Spaceship into orbit. Figuring out how to actually do all this stuff on Mars is pointless, given that even getting there is out of reach.

Why do you say he is Lying? It could simply be that he is "mistaken." Lies imply intentional deceit. Elon believes in what he's saying so it's not "lying."
There is a such thing as lying to oneself. When you don't know something to be true, why make a statement that only would sound good to you (hence you believing in your own misconception) and telling others this? Its a lie, if it's not true, then it's a lie, doesn't matter what the intention is, malicious or misguided, a lie is a lie.
@@antiseize11
Who lies to themselves? My mother told me a lot of things that never came to pass. Was she deliberately lying? NO. She genuinely believed what she was saying. What if I say something and then change my mind? Was I lying when I originally said it? No. Therefore, I don't accept your explanation at all.
@@Peekaboo-Kitty I understand your point, but anyone can lie to themselves, it's called delusion, overtly optimistic, or wishful thinking. It doesn't have to be malicious intent either. A statement made that is intrue is a lie by definition, either we're deceiving others or our own selves. We can even lie by omission, no one is immune to it, it's just life.
