  • A recent nostalgic visit (June 2018) to the location used for external scenes filmed for the TV series 'Open All Hours' / 'Still Open All Hours' staring the great Ronnie Barker and the very talented David Jason.
Big band vocalist and events organiser Gary Lewis takes some special time out to locate Arkwright’s corner shop from one of his all time favourite TV comedy programs ..... "Errrrr fetch a cloth GGGranville"

Hi Jim, thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment...it all helps to keep nudging it towards the 20000 views mark...be only my second video to reach that milestone even though its probably the shortest video l have made in 13 or so years of posting. Totally agree with you on Mr Barker, who l met albeit very briefly at a book signing , very unassuming and humble he was too after me thanking him for all the years of laughter he had given to millions worldwide....l think he was far more comfortable being in character as someone else...be it the slightly shifty but likeable Fletcher in 'Porridge' or miserly penny pinching Arkwright from Open All Hours....truly a master of his profession...the 'Governor' as David Jason called him...just brilliant.
Please check out some of our other videos, l have attached our latest for you to watch. Thanks again . Gary

Good to hear from the land of the Kangaroo, Cookaborough and Koala, which part are you from ? Thank you for taking the time to leave your comment and pleased the video helped bring back fond memories of watching the programme on TV with your late father, l was the same with my Dad , only for me it was 'Morecambe & Wise'...happy days indeed. This short unscheduled and unrehearsed video had until very recently turned out to be our second most watched in over ten years of posting, its my little tribute to the Comic genius that was Ronnie Barker. I will attach the new video that has surpassed it views wise and l hope that you enjoy watching it. Comment and share if you so wish. Thanks again. Gary

      Hi
Thank you for leaving your comment, good to hear from you...all the way from the USA you say ?. Pleased you enjoyed the short video, it was a real treat for me to finally visit the location, after being a big fan of 'Open All Hours' and the late great Ronnie Barker for many years...l"m sure you will enjoy watching all the episodes...they made 4 series, a total of 26 episodes between 1976- 1985. The fairly recent follow up series 'Still Open All Hours'...made without Barker who sadly passed away in 2005 wasn't 'in my opinion' anywhere near as funny...as good as David Jason is...it just wasn't the same....without Ronnie Barker.
If you enjoy a laugh then , you may like to watch my 'outtakes /bloopers' video...see attachment...comment and share if you so wish...lots of other videos too...if you are interested in history and music. Thanks again.

      Hi Gwenn
Great to hear from you, that's the second comment on this video from Australia in the last few days...made my day you have. For me Ronnie Barker WAS the show , and as talented and well loved as David Jason is the follow up series 'Still Open All Hours' wasn't in my opinion nowhere near as good. This is one of our most watched videos, totally unplanned and rehearsed, maybe that's why people enjoy watching it ? (plus that very rare look inside the shop as it really is) Outside the very shop l just couldn't resist doing my very poor Ronnie Barker/ Arkwright impression , regards to you and your mom, thanks again.
      Gary.

While seeing nostalgic areas where iconic TV shows like this were filmed, it is on the one hand interesting and exciting to see, yet sad. Sad in the sense that even though you know it’s not real, you almost wish it was and sad that the characters aren’t there in person. Especially knowing that, sadly, most of them all have since passed on, with very few exceptions. Once I binged watched Open All Hours, I immediately did the same with Porridge. 👍 👍

With reference to the campaign to keep the 'Open All Hours' shop, I hope 'Sid's Cafe' from 'Last of the Summer Wine' remains. As that is in Holmfirth, I doubt it would be demolished but a shame if it didn't remain a cafe. Just like you can imagine Ronnie Barker and David Jason on the step, inside the cafe you can imagine Compo, Clegg and Foggy sitting at a table or Nora Batty fending off Compo.

    • @timeslip9

Sean, thanks for your comment. Regards the opening direction of the front door, this has been noted before in the comments l think...and yes it is different to the 'studio' version of the door. My best guess is that for ease of studio filming purposes (people walking into shot on camera) better if the door opened behind the person entering the shop rather than in front of them ...less of a glass reflection issue too .As one film maker to another (although these days not as prolific as yourself) keep up the great work as you are a natural in front as well as behind the camera , your variation in topics and subject matter is to be commended, from Goldfinch's to walled gardens and from local history to rhubarb. Please check out some of our other videos (l will attach our latest), most welshmen have a decent singing voice (my late father was Welsh) so some of my earlier videos have a vocal / musical link connection....please feel free to comment and share if you so wish. Hi David ,
Thank you for taking the time to comment. Yes , It would be nice to think some of the actors, film crew and indeed the writer (Roy Clarke) who having been involved with the show over the years would have had a soft spot for the location and emotional attachment to the shop itself, but its more likely that it would have been seen by many as just a 'job' to get filmed and paid for, but l would loved to be proved wrong ....l have no doubt that the likes of the great Ronnie Barker , David Jason and Lynda Barron would have had a few laughs while on location filming there.

It’s good to see it still there today, but due to the popularity of the show it should of been kept as it was, as a tourist attraction, and a listed building of cultural importance. I’m sure it would of generated revenue from that, especially, with Open all hours being viewed by the younger generations on TH-cam. Perhaps, an entrepreneur might buy it, and see a golden opportunity to renovate it, and restore it as it was. Parking an original Morris minor outside, and Granville’s pedal cycle too.

Thank you for your comment, and its a nice idea of yours to have the shop looking like 'Arkwrights ' as it was in the series (not sure what the locals take on it would be though) , but in reality the shop has always been a family run hair salon , only being transformed externally into the corner shop by the BBC for visual effect . Hi Angel
Thank you for your comment, and you are 100% correct about my whistling at the end...l have regretted it ever since the posting ...because as a big band vocalist for many years l should have known better regards holding the microphone too close when talking/singing...and yes 'whistling'...if l ever go back l won't make the same mistake again....will take the band with me too. Thanks for the 'upvote'...it’s much appreciated and pleased you enjoyed the video, David Jason once said that Ronnie Barker was the 'governor', he certainly was...l met him once at a book signing in Birmingham, it was a real honour for me shaking his hand.

@@timeslip9 Hi Gary. Brilliant video mate. I have severe hyperacusis (bit like misophonia but worse) and yeah the whistling at the end triggered a reaction but was worth it for such a great video. I visited the filming location in 2008 and only managed to take a picture of my car outside the shop. The impression you did of Arckwright was spooky, listen to it yourself and you will see what I mean. Anyway thanks again buddy

Sorry, l have no information regarding the transition of the shop from Hair Salon / Boutique to Arkwright’s shop, but there is an excellent behind the scenes book by Graham McCann 'Still Open All Hours/ The Story Of A Classic Comedy', that may contain the information you are looking for.

@@timeslip9 Hi Gary. Thank you for guiding me. I shall certainly look for the book. I am really perplexed aa to why the location was not preserved for posterity. I think it is a real shame that it was abandoned to the vagaries of the real-estate market.

@@timeslip9 Absolutely. The local or national heritage authorities should have given closer consideration to the matter. A bit if "comedy" tourism could have probably helped the local economy of what looks like a very sleepy place. Mohamed.

I guess the exterior shots were all filmed during the hairdresser's holiday break, with the frontage all set up as Arkwright's shop. I used to love the closing soliloquy, it had a reflective melancholy. And the lights switching off.

      Hi Bruce
Thank you for taking the time leave your comment...it is much appreciated.
Good point regards WHEN they actually filmed the exterior shots outside the shop... it may have been when the owner was on holiday yes , another possibility (and its only a guess) may have been the BBC would have compensated the owner for the closure of the shop for the duration of filming (covering the loss of earnings)...there is l believe photos on the internet of the owner posing with Ronnie Barker & David Jason outside the shop...so not on holiday on that occasion. l also agree that the closing monologue at the end of each show had a touch of melancholy about it...(especially when delivered by Barker), l have said this before and people have the right to disagree, but the show WAS Ronnie Barker, the original show at times only needed to have the three main characters in it to be funny....as talented as David Jason is 'Still Open All Hours' ended up with around 15 actors in it to pad it out and nowhere near as funny...eventually becoming a cross between Last of The Summer Wine and Coronation Street ...it lost something when Linda Barron (nurse Gladys Emmanuel) left too.

      1. I would agree with you about the arrangement between the hairdresser and the BBC, More feasible.
      2. I just couldn't bear the follow-on. It was played for panto laughs, too aware of the audience. I watched one episode.
I'll never forget Ronnie Barker's masterly, and diametrically different, character in My House in Umbria. It was, I think, his final role, and beautifully capped a career of remarkable humour, writing, characters. A gifted man.

    • @johnr6168
      @johnr6168 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jrgboy You're correct, - and they were done before any studio recording. The edited footage was then played back to the studio audience during the 'interior' recording (at BBC TV Centre for the old series). They were played at the appropriate points in the story so that the studio audience saw all the scenes in the correct story order. The playback of the exterior scenes sometimes gave the actors a short break from the studio acting. This type of set up was common for comedy and some drama for many years. The outside shots were done on film up until the 1990s because no portable videotape recording equipment had broadcast quality until then. Recently remastered versions of the old series have removed the scratches from the film.

@@timeslip9 I felt that Linda/Gladys just didn't really have a role in the revived series (and I think I've read somewhere that Linda felt so too). The character had several bits of schtick in the original run, but they all were based either on being Arkwright's fiancee (and/or on generally being buxom), or on being a state registered nurse, or on comforting and mothering a naive and young Granville. So in the new version with Arkwright passed, Gladys inevitably retired, and Granville no longer really needing her caring and mothering, she no longer really fulfilled any function.

      Dear Mr Joe Blogs
Thank you for leaving your comment. I did go to film down the side (towards where the back gates were/are) but unlike the front of the shop which is l guess for public use to enter, or to stand there and read the times of opening...l decided the private rear gate entrance was best left unfilmed ...l'm not a local...and was some 100 miles from home....so didn't want to push my luck being asked what l was up to....from what l can see (and l maybe wrong) but my video is the ONLY one that shows in detail the REAL interior of the shop. I have linked a website below...with some rare photos showing the filming of the ORIGINAL and best 'Open All Hours' with the one and only Ronnie Barker... they include the back gate you refer to....l have linked my last two videos too...the 'outtakes' one may provide a few laughs.

Thank you for leaving your comment, and very well spotted regards the shop’s front door...l have never noticed that before. My guess is that if the 'studio' shop door opened the same way as the 'real' shop door...any actor entering the studio shop would be 'behind ' the door regards filming... also a lot more reflection to contend with in the glass ..studio lights ...camera crew and so on.. better to stand in front of the door...think the back room / kitchen door opens the same way too probably for the same reason...easier regarding filming.
