Hey Ricky, love your videos... There are some important features you forgot to mention, like Resampling. Which takes any sample and reprocesses it through the (SP 1200) Analog filter Input circuits. You can also resample at 26khz 12 bit or 48 16bit or even re-pitch up like vinyl from 33rpm to 45rpm for added old school sampling crunch (for those that don't know).
Full Midi 32 track Sequencer is now included with full MIDI MAP and MIDI CC control over VSTi in Ableton along with hardware synths, while then Slave syncing it to the ER-M MULTICLOCK in Ableton as the Master for recording. (PS: USB Audio bypasses SP1200 Filters on the 8 Outs).
It also has an additional 8 Track Live Looper mode, it's the brain of the entire studio now and with latest OS, I have yet to find any major bugs.
But they seem to release new OS updates and new features very often.
Build wise, yeah apart from the Mute Solo Buttons, the unit should last you at least 25 years. a Tank!
Hopefully they will add Conform to Musical Scales in the MIDI Sequencer soon with the next OS, along with the new Time Stretch.

I think this is the key - it's like buying a vintage sampler, you have to want the sound features bad enough to put up with quirks/workflow/whatever else you don't like.

Oh yeah, I wasn’t trying to do a complete crazy overview. And a lot of the features you mentioned are cool and very useful at times. I’m still getting to grips with this thing I just wanted to give a quick initial impression on how I would most likely use the machine. With most of the devices I use it’s not until the later stages where I really implement all these features to create new styles of music that are outside of what I usually do.
This is an amazing list for anyone to check out though! I hope people do, and I’m going to pin your comment so that people can see it

@@RickyTinez Hi and thanks for sharing. How do you see the s2400 for live performances having it being the brain, drum machine- sampler, and using the looper and midi tracks to play synths and other instruments? I can see that the song mode lacks from programming capabilities, like more type of events and being able to send midi messages. Would you consider the octatrack better in this respect? Thanks for the help! I’ve been waiting 1 year now and really wondering if I should reconsider buying it.

so if you loaded a sample, say at 33 rpm from a record in, you can resampled to pitch it up and then slow it down to get that grit? wow that’s amazing, was thinking about just loading drum sounds into my mpc, pitching them up, and THEN sampling into the 2400. dope to here i can skip that process and do it all in the 2400!

    Hey Ricky,
Thanks for taking the time out to make this video, we're truly honoured.
We're super proud that you and others have commented on the S2400's sound. That was always the impetus for making the machine. Everything else can grow and develop as we carve away at the creation of the OS.
There are a few points I noticed in the video where there was some frustration on your side on how things might be expected to work., Some of which has been talked about prior to this video which we have already taken on board. Firmware updates, at our current rate, are released almost monthly, fixing bugs that are found and also adding more functionality to the machine as we progress and take on board all that you guys are saying.
I hope to see more content from you on our baby as we all grow and develop with it, I'm envious of how gorgeous your camera shots are!
Sorry we didn't get to meet again at knobcon this year was a bit too risky for me.

Count me in as a s2400 fan who owns 2 units, has NO problems with his mute/solo buttons, and finds the heft to be equiv to the MPC3000 and quite lovely. In addition, the method in which you edit a particular track/channel using the A button and then Shift-A to write the change or "Modify", is well thought out. Why? Because it allows you to alter, audition back and forth, and then write the change should you decide. IMHO the s2400 is a simple and fast way to lay down your ideas in the crunchiest old school way possible. And the way it can USB to your computer and becaome a virtual external HDD is so efficient. I advise everyone to read the well thought-out review of the S2400 in Sound on Sound magazine.

I understand Ricky made this video very early on, and it looks like it was a bit harder to use. In September 2023 this is an excellent instrument. I have had it home a few hours and already got external clock inputs from SW SYNC working tight, am making kits, patterns, mults etc... The workflow is incredibly good.

  • @benmironmd

You don’t need to override that way if you don’t want - you can set up override mode when recording like you did and press the pad when you want to implement it into the sequence - that allows you to overdub the setting just where you want it. Super fun to record filter changes but also level changes. The cool thing then is you can change the level slider as you hold down or press the pad while in override mode and it will put in different levels. Just FYI

    • @IrrationalExuberance
      @IrrationalExuberance 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This is correct. Sigma notation can be thought of like a “for loop” of sorts where repeat summing of terms needs to be written in a compact form. It is commonly encountered in Calculus 3 when working with infinite series but it absolutely applies to audio summing and also comes up in lens optics. Disclaimer: I don’t know about how DSP works. However, there are parallels between summing periodic functions like say sin waves both on a graphing calculator as well as when using a digital mixer doing linear summing. In other words when you have two sin waves that are in the same phase you will get amplitude gains both on a graph as well as in an actual audio mix (hence the need for headroom to mix audio)

One feature not mentioned in this review: 'midi input focus' - this is a game changer! Control external synths with a keyboard connected by USB (or midi) to the 2400. Switch between them by pressing 'A' above each track/pad, and MIDI is re-routed to the channel assigned to that pad. I have a different synth assigned to each pad and just press A to have the keyboard play & record notes with perfect timing in the S2400. This puts the 2400 firmly in the centre of my small rig. Nice touch and well thought out feature. With the highly active community on the forum, the team are listening and squashing bugs and making workflow improvements with regular firmware updates 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I mean I’ve been in the same position more times than I count… I don’t fault Rickey at all. It’s his honest first impressions. And yeah if you aren’t familiar with some of the ways it sequences (and it is very different from say an mpc or an elektron) many of these things can confuse you (like the fact that the level is a recorded state vs the mixer being a freely set able mixing level.) or the method for fader locking etc. my initial impression of the faders were also that they were too light. But I realized at the same time this is the price you pay for using high quality DJ quality faders. They have their advantages as well over stiff faders. But yeah fader locking is a key imho and saves you from screwing stuff up (which would happen regardless of fader viscosity… so this really is a good thing.) I have a feeling eventually we will see more.

Good points, but maybe this highlights a basic point that some aspects of the OS/UI are kind of crappy in comparison to other current gear. The workflow for modifying parameters is pretty annoying - but if it weren't that way ppl would be losing their minds with faders positions, slice points, and envelopes shifting around on their own and screwing up sequences.

Those modification settings are SUPER unintuitive when you get started, I absolutely agree. BUT, they're only unintuitive. They're certainly not a flaw. Now that I have the muscle memory down, changing pitch/level/envelope etc is a million times faster in my s2400 than anything else I own. The genius behind the Isla's workflow is that once you have a part dialed in, you can mangle it all to hell trying to find a better vibe, but if you decide you wanna take it back, you just turn off override. Boom, you're back to the original, decent sounding starting point. If you do like your changes? Select override and modify. It's a really, really nice way to work without worrying about needing to physically undo all of your changes. Hands down the worst live performance setting you could ask for haha, but as a studio piece, it's incredible

Just got mine and love it. Use it in conjunction with my Tempest and think it’s wonderful. It takes some getting used to and I’m still learning song mode to sync both “songs” on my S2400 and Tempest at the same time but overall I’ve already done about 5 tracks in 2 days with it.
My only requests for features are an arpeggiator which is something super unique to the Tempest in that it helps to create organic hi hat patterns, Tom fills, and melodic bass lines...would love to see that implemented on the S2400.
The other is for each channel to somehow have more than one sound at once. Even with 8 voice Polyphony it would be nice to be able to play sounds from say Bank A pad 1 and Bank 2 pad 1 through the same channel. Much like how the Prophet X has 2 samples and 2 oscillators per voice. Not sure if this is a hardware limitation but it would be nice.

Like all things quirky on the S2400 they listed them as Ionian (Major) and Aeolian (Minor), search for them in the fader pitch window.

The workflow of 'setting up' a sound before you record into the sequencer is definitely at odds with the MPC way. BUT... there are some real advantages to the SP1200/S2400 way. Because all the values (level, pitch, filter, envelope, start/end/loop points etc.) are recorded into the sequencer for every note, it means you can literally have different values for every note of your sequence. It's a bit like Electron parameter locks (except they're always on). So in theory, there are an infinite number sounds you can record into the sequencer using just one pad. Also, the S2400 allows you to overwrite any parameter live by just holding the pad in record overwrite mode and moving the fader or knobs. You can get some great bass/hihat/synth lines by recording, for example, Envelope Decay tweaks as a pattern plays. Each note can even have a different filter type. The MPC can't do that. Pros and cons to both ways.

@@jovantrendmaker4722 Well perhaps you can, though you must have missed my comment about efficiency not being the reason I still use old equipment. :)
Besides there are subtleties to sounds that cannot be replicated, things like, the specific ways a particular action of a keybed forces you to play, eg the polly AT on my SQ-80 - unless you want to go in and edit notes by hand, which really would be inefficient in comparison. There are a couple of Polly AT controller keyboards around but good luck finding a 61 note one.
Though that’s just one example I’ve been using DAW’s since Cubase 1.0 was released on the Atari in April 1989, I would’ve brought it on my Macintosh but that came out in 1990 which I still sometimes use.
Of course all of that got made obsolete by sonic foundries ACID- and of course the whole host of VST and plug-in stuff..
...and yes I have followed it all from there so I’m well aware of what it’s all capable of.. :) The sky is the limit as they say but there is a lot to be said for limitation too!
fully cognisant here of the potential of modern equipment and Plug-ins.. and I guess if that’s your thing and you dig it you can work it like a beast but you have to bear in mind, technologically this is much like anything...
      For instance:
Machine guns might have made swords pretty much obsolete, but I still would rather watch an expert in swordsmanship, then a highly skilled marksman. Both talents have their place.
..before you point out not to bring a knife to a gunfight, knives for the average skill level, are well known to be more deadly at close range then small arms, but of course it all depends on the skill level of the user. Also this is a rather morbid analogy and probably shouldn’t be taken too far. 😂
Hopefully you get the point though. Believe it or not there are actually things that can’t be replicated even with the latest equipment without considerable difficulty. Even that argument says nothing of the emotional and ontological practice of making music in a particular methodology.
I dare say anyone sufficiently skilled in whatever device they are using could pretty much do almost anything with it- however at least for myself musicmaking is more of an experiential process than an exercise in ruthless digital efficiency.
I do hear this argument from you youngsters allot and it must be terribly frustrating trying to get through to the older generation who are just so incredibly out of touch.. heheh 😏

From watching the development of this, I went from excited to uninterested for reasons this video seems to confirm. Piling on the features but not displaying having the base functions clear and intuitive. The SP1200 is legendary because for its time it was really well thought out, streamlined and sounded rad. I wish it stuck to emulating the 1200 and then just worked on modernising the frustrations of that machine. Instead it took its best features and tried to piggy back them onto features that aren’t compatible.

The sound is fat and warm but the chopping function not so much you can’t create drum kits from your chopped samples plus some of the preset drum kits were not truncated that well. But I can honestly say that after acquiring the S2400 I'm finally full. I use to want an SP-1200 and an MPC 3000 but after getting this I could care less about them especially the SP-1200 🙄. I wish live hell the converters on my live sound this buttery. Don't get me wrong I was frustrated with coming from the quick workflow of the mpc especially the live. Having effects on deck has spoiled me tremendously.

I believe the cons of the machine you’re frustrated of are safety features. When you get happy accidents, the slightest accidental change can ruin potential magic. With so many sliders and buttons, it’s easy to change a parameter that totally changes the feel and you didn’t even know you did it. With the undo feature being finite, you might undo something you put a lot of effort into. Easier to make slight changes and get it just right instead of just erasing it and now you’re crushed. I had an old loop sampler that was very primitive. And I had a happy accident that turned out to be gold. I broke my neck rocking to it so hard. I went to make change and I accidentally erased it. I straight up cried. Then spent 10 hours trying to get it again to no avail. Once you get used to the flow, it will be second nature. And you won’t accidentally kill something magical. Thanks for the vid and thanks for your opinions. I can’t wait to get one myself. Always wanted an SP but the MPC3000 came out and it made me forget about the SP. If I was rich I would’ve had both.
