    Matt this was actually very helpful for my A6300. Not quiteeee the same but close enough. For some reason I totally overlooked quickly setting 120fps to the mode dial. Thanks for this !

    Kudos to you Matt for making the time to produce these tutorials. It made getting my new Sony a7sII up and running for a multi camera shoot so all cameras were synched and doing what they needed to on the fly a snap. Alright, not a snap, but given the 3-4 hours I spent setting up and then testing all that you shared was invaluable. Thumbs up!

    Just finished this video, second in a row. Wow, the section on the memory presets was helpful! I watched it twice to get the concept. I can't imagine trying to figure out those functions by reading the manual! The memory presets really open up some possibilities for quick adjustments. I bought my a7ii mainly to shoot real estate photos and some video, both pretty predictable situations (especially using a manual angle lens) so I am not anticipating the kind of run and gun changing situations that Matt faces doing weddings. But this information about the functions of the camera open up some intriguing possibilities! Thank you, Matt! On to video three!...

    Great video, Matt! I remember you mentioning the different frame rates in another video a while back. I definitely implemented the mode dial in my shooting after that. I shoot with an a7s so my film strip movie mode is 24p, mode 2 is 1080 @ 60p, and mode 1 is 120p @720 that way I can just roll the dial without even having to switch to the m1's and m2's.

    Great, very useful, I was not sure what the M1 M2 M3 M4 were, they clears it up. I'm going to dial some settings in now. This should help prevent what happened to me yesterday: I took some slo mo 100p then thought I had changed back to 25p but it was still on slo mo. Had to speed the clips up in fcpx... it was ok though, mostly the extra slo mo clips were really useful...

    As everyone else says, your videos are life savers. You, sir, are awesome! 2 quick questions that I can't find the answers to:
    1) What is the rationale behind shooting 30fps and then conforming it to 24fps? Is it "better"? If so, would it make sense to make that your primary go-to rather than 24fps?
    2) Why is your F-Stop set differently on both of the presets in the video? F4 vs F5.6?
    Thank you for any help you can provide!

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Richard Allen thanks Richard! To answer your questions:
      1. Check out this video if you haven't. In it I cover when I'm using different frame rates. I find that 30fps smoothess things out a little bit when shooting once I conform it to 24fps. th-cam.com/video/bbowa8XpPLs/w-d-xo.html
      2. Haha I think that was just a weirdness in me changing settings while recording the video. I change my fstop all the time depending on what I'm shooting.

    • @richardallen08
      @richardallen08 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for answering so promptly! Glad to see I'm not the only aspiring entrepreneur up late :) ...ya know, just 3:45 Charlotte time and 2:45 Austin time. Sleep is for the weak! :P but really, thanks bro!

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Richard! Brandon is referring to dropping a 30fps clip into a 24fps timeline without conforming. The way I do it, I interpret the footage, so all 30 frames are being used, and no frames are dropped.
      I prefer shooting anything that I need audio for at 24fps. Otherwise I conform all my 30fps and 60fps footage to 24fps, so those clips are all in slow motion. Hope that explains it! :)

  • @luappaul21
    @luappaul21 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Matt, this video is great, but how do you deal with the fact that every time you change your frame rate via the mode dial, all the other settings are the same as what they were ORIGINALLY set to. So if you were shooting at 24p and adjusted your white balance, ISO and (because I have manual lenses) adjusted my steady shot focal length, then when you switch to 60fps you've got to go in and change all those things again. It just about negates the usefulness of having the "convenience" of the memory function for changing frame rate quickly. And another issue with this is when every you format your card, the M1, M2 and M3 slots reset to blank!

    Great video! Just want to say that your reviews and tutorials are what made me finally switch from the 5d3 to the A7sII. So far it's going pretty well, just a bit of a learning curve! I did have one question, what is the benefit of shooting in 30fps for b-roll instead of 24? I shoot in 24p in 1080 and 4k and will switch to 60p if I see a need for slowmotion. I would have thought adding 30p into a 24p timeline would be awkward... Thanks!

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Glad to help you make the switch! :D I treat 30 like a subtle form of slow motion. I edit everything on a 24p timeline and interpret all the footage in Premiere so it is all treated as 24p, including the 30fps footage. Hope that helps!

    • @MBWeddingFilms
      @MBWeddingFilms 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Makes sense! I will try that out a bit at today's wedding.

    • @naugarra
      @naugarra 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. Slow Motion question - when I shoot 60p and drop into 24p slow down 40% as suggested. It still looks choppy on pans. What gives?
      Should I be interpreting footage first? BTW shooting at 1/125 shutter-speed.

    I'm new to Sony cameras. Am I missing something or is this how this works? I setup my different settings on the mode dial as per your video here, but I also have a custom Picture Profile where I've tweaked a bunch of settings and I figure, great, I'll just select that picture profile on each of my settings (when I set it up originally I just had everything on PP8, now I want to have it on the new picture profile). But on each mode dial setting, 1,2,M1,M2, etc my picture profile isn't there. Only on the first one. The copy function doesn't help me because the profile I want isn't there. Until I go back into let's say "1" where I originally setup the custom picture profile. So I now have to set all the settings for the custom picture profile 6 times. They don't seem to exist system wide, only within each mode number. Is this how it works, or am I missing something?

    Matt. Whats the difference between having your regular manual setting at 120 frame rate/ 250 shutter speed than keeping your settings at 4k 24 frames /50 shutter and just going to HFR M? The HFR M kicks you into slow-mo and it lets you change the shutter to 250. When you play it back in-camera it shows you it in slow-mo. The regular Manual setting shows you in real time.
    Let me know if I need to make a video explaining what I mean. I'm on the A6300.
    Thanks,

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alex Smith hey Alex! I don't believe the A7sii has a hfr option. But it really comes down to your preference. Hfr is good if you don't want to have to conform the video to slow motion and have the camera do it for you.

  • @MillionairesRow
    @MillionairesRow 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's worth pointing out that when using the memory recall to do slow motion these clips will record audio and will play back in the camera as if they are at normal speed. You will need to slow them down in your editor to get the slo motion and this will need to be rendered. I found out that if you set your frame rate to 100fps and record in the movie setting then you get files that play back in the camera in slo mo and also do not need to be slowed down or rendered if, for instance, a 100fps clip is dropped onto a 25fps timeline. You get instant slo mo with no extra rendering, but no audio is recorded. Any advice about which technique is better?

      It is not your fault :) it is just that Sony software team are funny guys. There are a lot of stupid things about those memory settings that made me stop using them. One of the main reasons was that you can't measure custom WB in memory recall. WHY? :) They also do not set all of the camera settings and you can get screwed sometimes because of that.

    • @codyjones3720
      @codyjones3720 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      YOU CAN SAVE THEM! :D Just open up your memory card on your computer then open the PRIVATE folder then open the SONY folder. Copy out the SETTING folder to you desktop. This folder holds are your memory settings. Copy and past this to all your cards and done! It's tedious.. but maybe a little faster than setting them all up again and again and again and again. ;)

    Hey Matt, stoked on your tutorials man for real great stuff! One quick question.. if you're shooting most of a wedding in 24p why would you shoot b-roll in 30p? wouldn't you want just 24p unless you're doing slowmo in which case wouldn't you want 60p or 120p? I've been under the impression that mixing 24p and 30p can look off, but haven't tried myself yet..

    Hey Matt,
    Thank you for all these videos, they’re great - especially for a novice. I just have a question in regards to the ISO on the s-log 3 setting where the picture profile is set to 8. When in this setting the lowest ISO I can select is 1600, I’ve tried to figure how I can use ISO 100 but that (i think) requires changing the picture profile to auto? Is it because 1600 is the native ISO in this profile? I’ve followed your settings in video one and yet yours shows otherwise? What’s the going on? I’d love your advice and help with this!

  • @alenelson25

    Matt, one question, the M presets are saved in the camera, I read that they go to the memory card so if you change memory or format you loose the M versions of the presets. Thanks for doing these videos.

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Alejandro! Yes, that is unfortunate and I didn't realize it until after filming the video. The M1-M4 presets are saved to the memory card, so if you format it they are lost. :(

    Do you think you could do a video on your editing process when you're working with files that are xavc s hd at 60 and xavc s 4k at 23.9. Trying to find some videos on it but not coming up with much.

      Hey Taylor! I'll add this to my list of videos to make in the future. To sum it up, I edit on a 4K timeline and upscale the HD footage to match the 4K footage. With TH-cam's compression it looks pretty good. Then, I export in 4K as I would normally. :)

    Hi Matt, nice to meet you ;) Great tutorials for setting up a A7S ii. Now I still have a Canon 70D, but I'm thinking about to invest this year in a A7S, because I would like to start filming. 70D is great, but that camera has some cons for filming, like the restriction of fps. One thing that I am struggling with are the settings to actually shoot footage. Should you only set the file format to the correct settings, like for example 4k at 24fps and then have the ability and flexibility of changing shutter speed, aperture and ISO of the camera or do you have to set only the shutter to double the frame rate as mentioned in this video and have then only the aperture and ISO to control the rest of the settings to shoot footage?
    So when you have set the Record Settings to for example XAVC S 4k 24p (fps), the shutter speed will be at 1/50 and if XAVC S 4k 30p (fps) the shutter will be at 1/60. So every time you should double the shutter speed of the camera when changing the framerate of the video? And to film slo-motion, the settings will be XAVC S 4k at 60fps and a shutter of 1/120 shutter? And then only have the ability of changing the aperture and ISO to get the best look, so a bright lens is no unnecessary luxury?
    Thank you for your time and great series of videos. Hope you've some time to answer my question. Really want to know it, so I am be able to boost my film skills to the next level with credits to you Matt :)

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Casper! As a rule, your shutter speed should be double your framerate. So 24fps a 1/50 shutter. 30fps a 1/60 shutter. When shooting slow motion, you can go higher than double the shutter speed and it won't be a huge issue. You could shoot 60fps with a 1/400 shutter etc. Just don't ever set your shutter lower than your framerate.

    Do you use general white balance approximations like 3200k for inside and 5500k for outside and adjust the temp for what looks good on your screen by eye? I ask because I noticed the set custom white balance option isn't selectable for me UNLESS I go into M mode on the dial and then I can set my balance by taking a picture in the scene... I can shoot video in M mode but I love the idea of switching between my memory 1 & 2 that you showed us. I looked at what the picture in M mode told me and went back to my memory 1 spot add added in the light value and I actually needed to move my color down a couple ticks. Lots of fun playing around but maybe just a quick visual guess adjustment is all that is needed, not actually taking a picture of a white card and reading the calculations then applying them to my movie memory mode...

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Norman! Yes I gauge everything by eye when shooting. I've got pretty decent with it after 7 or so years lol. You should definitely be able to set the custom white balance in Kelvin while in video mode. Did you watch my video about Sony menus? I covered this setting in that video.

    • @slangdoll
      @slangdoll 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did watch that video, thank you for that. Yes, I can set the temp (K value) like you show but I was talking about the last icon in the WB section SET where you hit the centre-button to take a picture of a white-card and it tells you the k-value and even sometimes slightly adjusts the color then you can assign that to one of the three custom spots. It seems to be a manual photography setting only but it's how I've set my balance... I've never even paid attention to the actual results before and that option is "greyed out" when in video mode but I can remember the results and apply them to one of my video memory setting on the dial. I'll just keep at it and sooner or later I'll get where I can make very good guesses rather then have the sensor tell me what it should be.

    • @slangdoll
      @slangdoll 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK! I get it now... Haha. I thought my picture white balance sets were only there in M mode but they ARE there in video mode, I just have to go to M mode to take the white card pic and back to video mode to select my balance NICE! And thanks to your latest video, I can add it to my memory :) THANKS MATT JOHNSON :p

    Question:
    Videos will be exported for TH-cam. I would be editing in 24p.
    Slow motion I would record in 120fps. But.. since my videos would not have any synced audio (no talking) I was told to use 4K-30fps as when I put it in a 24p timeline it will look smoother and better. But when recording voice audio, then I should keep it at 24fps. TRUE?
    If it is... if Im shooting video at 30fps will all my audio be off even if there are no voices? Such as ambient sounds in the video?

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Michael! I shoot everything that I need audio for at 24fps and I always edit on a 24fps timeline. You'll need to conform your 30, 60, and 120fps footage to 24fps (making it slow motion) otherwise you're going to get a weird stuttering effect in your video because Premiere will drop some frames so it matches 24fps.

    Hey matt,
    When i first picked up my a7s2 in december 2014, I was using the m1,m2,m3,m4 features to set up different profiles just like you are showing in this video. But I always ran into a problem. Whenever I would format the memory card in camera using sub menu 6 (toolbox) page 5, It deletes all my M1, M2, M3, M4, presets. It retains the main 1 & 2 presets but it deletes all the M1-4 presets. Am i doing something wrong? Is there a way to format the SD card in camera without losing all your M1-4 presets?
    I called sony about this and they told me there was nothing I could do, but i thought you might know some kind of trick... maybe? hopefully?

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vertek Media hey! Unfortunately I've had mixed results with this too. I believe that the camera is saving 1 and 2 to the camera memory, and m1-m4 to the memory card. I don't have a fix for making everything save to the camera unfortunately.
