    • @forewarnedfilm
      @forewarnedfilm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      2020 was a VERY tempting year for upgrading, but I have decided to stick with my Lumix G80, and selection of vintage lenses until I know that camera inside out. I like the challenge of helping a camera punch above its weight. And if 4K wasn’t an industry distraction, I would say the C100 is one of the great cinema cameras in its class still - shot some of my best work on it.
      You simply must do a video on the XL-1. The memories!

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@forewarnedfilm very tempting...C100 is perfect for youtube now, I've upraised some stuff to 4k with it, but carefully so. XLR, battery endurance, form factor, AF just makes it hard to part with at this point. Colour are nice too, all on camera and top down stuff is shot with it.
      XL-1 for sure, i tend to seed future videos in my current videos just as a subtle serial narrative ;)

    • @forewarnedfilm
      @forewarnedfilm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MarkHoltze Couldn’t agree more about the C100. Here’s a little sci-fi short I shot with that camera. It’s Doctor Who-based, but you won’t hold that against me, will you? Hey wait - come back!!!

    A few years ago a TH-camr made a video about how cameras have reached a point where all needs are met and that the only thing we can expect from that point on is more bells and whistles. It's not that the evolution in technology is bad in any way, but the only logical reason to upgrade is if the gear is holding you back. So that's my metric. It certainly helps to mitigate gear lust for the newer stuff, but now I find myself pining for quality older gear as they become more affordable :P

  • @PhaseDriveVlogs
    @PhaseDriveVlogs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Still occasionally using my Canon 550D - that camera that opened up full manual control filmmaking to the masses and actually made the "film look" achievable!
    The A7SII and Original Mavic Pro was like the ultimate combo only a few years back. I desperately wanted it for the longest time, and only ended up going down the GH5 route due to more useful features for my needs.

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      GH5 was a smarter choice for sure, I needed to match the other A7sii's in the fashion shoot so it wasn't an option, the fact it's ff wasn't important to me until i started shooting vintage glass. Now it's just nice the lenses are 1:1 with no crop or loss of light factor, but other than that, MFT or super 35 all day long.

    • @PhaseDriveVlogs
      @PhaseDriveVlogs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarkHoltze Super 35 size is the sweet spot for me. I use all my vintage (Pentax K) glass with a focal reducer on the GH5 and it gives me around that equivalent sensor size/FOV. That combo is very versatile and gives rather film-like results.

    My Sony a7r II served as my main portrait camera (with adapted manual focus lenses exclusively) since November 2015! Now I'm switching to autofocus and I jumped ship to a Panasonic S5 with Panasonic 70-200. I paid $3200USD for that a7r II but I'm spending less than that for my entire new kit including grip, extra battery, and lens adapters for my Canon FD lenses. May not adapt my Canon EF Tlit Shift lenses... almost 8 years!

    This is very inspiring Mark! For years I was more a gear and tech collector instead of a creator. But last year I consciously wanted to change that at started my small YT channel to put those tools into work.
    "Exploiding what it's good at and minimising what it's not" is an amazing motto. I will keep that in mind during my learning journey 🙂.
    Although that vintage collecting fiver is also tempting and hard to resist 😆
    But for now the FD 85mm f1.8, 50mm f1.4 and 70-200 f4 is more then enough material to learn with 😇

A7Sii will stay in my kit for a little while yet.

    I let my Sony A7R 36 megapixels go to my daughter. She was using a Canon EOS. I thought she need an upgrade. Bought a Sony A7M2 because of my age! needed the steady shot inside stabilization for hand held shots. Yes, there is other ways around the hand movement most of the had held shots are snap shot or just a test shots before I go to the tripod. I don't do movies yet! Landscape photography is my hobby. Lately I am using the Helios 44-3. A Christmas present. The only upgrade I would make is for more megapixels. But I ask myself do I really need the extra megapixels?

    So I guess It's ok to admit BUYING a used RX100 mkII in 2020 ? (Camera from 2014, cost 1850 Kronor, which is like 220 US dollar)
    Well that's what's in my pocket anyway, I really like that little ting.
    BTW I recently improved a few of my m42 adapters, improved you ask ?
    Some of the cheaper ones, had a shiny (Anodized) aluminium ring inside.
    With a self adhesive flocked back vinyl mounted to this ring, I actually got better contrast with some lenses.
    Especially my telephoto Komura 200mm f3,5 and my Komura 300mm F5.
    Let's hope for a better 2021 everyone even if we are off for a VERY bumpy start.

    What camera do you recommend under lets say, 1200 dollars? Is 4K really that needed? I shoot 60fps most of the time, i love the look of 60 and i sometimes tend to shoot 24.
    Is there any good 4K60 camera that's cheap that's not a phone or action cam? All i know are the Panasonic GH5 and BMPCC 4K, I am mostly a small TH-camr but i am making video work for people. Or is 1080p60 good enough? If so, which cameras?, again i do mostly shoot and export at 60fps.

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I shoot video; not stills so that’s where my focus is. I don’t print photos ever, if I did I wouldn’t blow 12mp images up too big, but you can go pretty big. You just can’t crop in too much or over edit. You don’t but an A7sii if your focus is photo, the Rii is a photo focused camera and has the MP to back it up.
      S series on alpha, video focused R series photo focused. :)

    Do you think the Sony A7R II is a good buy in 2023 used? Thinking about buying one used since it's full frame and 1080p60 and 4K30. Will it work with B4 lenses? There's a few vintage ENG cameras, such as the Sony DXC-M3A, that have B4 mount lenses. They used a connector for powered zoom and auto iris though and I don't think it will work with the camera.

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so, loads of resolution on that camera even by todays standards.

      @@MarkHoltzeShoukd I get the A7sii though. I want to mostly shoot video but I want a good photo camera. I was happy with the photo quality of my a6000, so I assume the A7sii is the best choice. Plus the SII can do 1080p at 120fps.

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya the Sii is the better video camera for sure. I would save a bit more and go for the A7iii, better colors and better auto focus/battery. Also gives you 24mp Vs 12

    • @KylesDigitalLab
      @KylesDigitalLab ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarkHoltze thanks I'm going to invest in the a7 III. What's a good starter lens for it, and are all e-mount lenses the same? When I had my a6000 it had a 16-50mm lens but that was using an APS-C sensor. Would that lens work on the full frame cameras? I was thinking about buying like an old Canon EF lens with an adapter and using that for a little bit until I can afford a good E-mount lens, because they are expensive. I'm planning to spend about $1200 on the camera body used.

    What made the Mark ii is IBIS, no real need for sticks! Next on camera apps like Digital Filter no need to carry filters and holders! Bottom line October 2015 and it was 7 years ahead of other makers even today Oct 2022 others just getting mirrorless started and their lenses. It was the day when ISO 6400 was max without extending and noise control in SW was just starting. And Capture One was ahead of Lr for only $30 vs Ps and Lr ea $800 and each new update! Still after 7 years ahead of others for still or video and now $1K a great deal.

    Familiarity with cameras has become underrated in the current upgrade cycle. Learning a menu system on a hybrid can be a nightmare, and even worse is memorizing them from on multiple cameras.

  • @sztomi90
    @sztomi90 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well I have the A7s mk1 for more that a year and I use it only with vintage glass, even for events.(30 min video limit removed with the playmemories tweak app) It is a workhorse, it never let me down, but the grip is just to shallow, and with bigger lenses it is awful. I also want to invest in some AF lenses, and I am worried it won't worth it since the a7s has basic autofocus system. These are the main reasons why I am thinking of an upgrade to a never one like the a7s2 or r2 but those are still too expensive considering how old they are, they are in the same price bracket in my area like a Canon Eos R, so I think I will go Canon route. The better specs combined with the ability to use much more affordable EF and even EF-s lenses is too tempting. Not to mention the seemingly DSLR like grip of the R. Anyway I will probably keep the A7s as well. :)

    2023 viewer here. I've been looking at used A7sii versus a used A7iii. As far as I can tell, the A7iii has a couple main advantages: battery life and better autofocus. Does anybody feel like these things are worth the extra $400? I do shoot some weddings and I'm interested in shooting 4k s-log, but looking for a deal on an all-around workhorse. Open to anybody's thoughts comparing the two.
