  • Back in 1983, The Washington State Department of Transportation drove East on SR-900 and recorded video to document the highway. This was part of a project that photographed/videotaped the states highways every couple of years. This video now resides at The Washington State Archives who were kind enough to share it.

Parts of Renton look more or less the same, but Isaaquah! Holy cow it's changed.

1983 the year Empire Way was changed to MLK Jr. Way.
3:05 across that bridge was Franklin High spent one year there.
4:42 To the right, the old Rainier Vista. Couple of old friend that was there back then.
8:55 Spent a lot of time at Fred Meyer and the old Wig Wam. LOL
9:20 Church Fry Chicken. Every Sunday afternoon. Love that place.
11:35 Jack's been there a long time. Did most of my car parts shopping there.
23:26 where the S curve is, Busy then busy now. Love it, thanks for the memory

Yes, remember going to the Wig Wam store as a young kid and later just to the north across the street from the Wig Wam I went to work for South End Screen as a teen in 1971. The building the screen company was located in was at one time a variety store though I can't remember the name. Would cash my paychecks at the nearby Peoples National Bank at the corner of Othello and Empire. Church's chicken was great takeout, sure miss that option.

I love seeing all of the old compact cars that haven't been seen on the roads for almost 30 years now. Lots of old Japanese economy cars also. Not to mention some of the classic malaise sedans and coupes.

Seems the camera was positioned so that everything on the left was not visible. Couldn't see Skaggs, Rebel records, or King and Bunny's, to name a few in Renton East Highlands. As big as Renton Western Wear was, it's not visible from the camera angle.

33:59 for all the Coalfield kids! Our "home" games for Liberty back then were played at the Issaquah stadium. Very familiar with the Renton/Issaquah part of 900

I spent many years traveling 900.A lot of people might not remember that there was a fire station in the yellow building near Lenard s.

wow I take this road everyday, I had no idea it was called 'empire way' in those times. Some of those places are still open today like burger king, wendys and few of the 7/11's. My current apartments did not exist. I see bunch of trees where they stand now.

Yes it was Empire Way before Mlk Way, I was born and raised in the Rainier Valley, Rainier Beach and Beacon Hill neighborhood. I was kid in the 1970s and a teenager and a young adult the 1980s growing up there.

The name Empire Way was a tip of the hat to James J Hill "The Empire Builder". He was president of the Great Northern Ry and the man responsible for the construction of the line to Seattle in 1892.

Does anyone remember what that Burger joint was called next to Mark n Pak back in 83? On the corner where Old Sunset meets Sunset. Became a teriyaki spot, then a Herfy's. It's a Santa fe grill now. Loved the fried mushrooms back in 83

Never knew there was a Triumph motorcycle shop on Empire/MLK @ 8:30.
Always dealt with Dewey's on 12th/Capitol Hill.
Out of sequence from Old Sunset at 405 to 900 @ 405. Lunch break?😏
40 years ago, not a single red light between the end of the Renton Highlands at Duval, and 1-90 in Issaquah. Now, around a dozen.

It was all so much more civilized back then. Now I look at these areas and I think of the degradation and crime how it’s no longer safe to live in these areas.
