Beautifully sung... love Max Boyce... I still have my great Granchers Lamp Check No.1 from Marine Colliery, Cwm... welsh Miners from the valleys, the salt of the earth!
But I can't forget the times we had, The laughing midst the fear, 'Cos every time I cough I get, A mining souvenir. - These have to be some of the most poignant lyrics I have ever heard.
THIS ALWAYS MAKES ME THINK OF THE VILLAGE WHERE I GREW UP,A LITTLE VILLAGE GLYNCORRWG, SUCH HAPPY MEMORIES OF MY 15 YRSTHERE ,I STILL CALL IT HOME ,1 DAY I WILL BE BACK THERE .🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
My enduring memory of a Forest of Dean miner walking up the hill past Cinderford library. Oxygen bottle in his hand, he would take a few steps before stopping to use his bottle.
One of the most moving renditions I heard of this song was at a working men's club in Caernarvon, in 1990. My brother's band was playing a dance, and at the end of the evening an old fella took the microphone and sang this song. Not very well, but with great feeling.
I think this is a miners song, well sung by MAX BOYCE .A story in a song ,love it and it still brings tears to my eyes every time i hear it,as i come from a welsh mining famiy.
Proud to be Maori/Welsh mix. We had a mighty man like this in Aotearoa once called Prince Tui Teka, moe mai ia, haere ki te po nui ki ti po roa ki te po maire. Now du'in triao shaddar Cymraeg! Cymru am byth! Big ups to the Richards family.
That's one hell of a mix! Proud to be Welsh and proud to have mining as a part of my history. It's so important that we don't forget those that worked down in the mines. Cymru am byth indeed 🏴❤
Great song! Greetings from Greece! Unfortunately there are some big and powerful countries who do not want the smaller countries than them to get strong.
Why can't we have max Boyce back singing to the crowd's b4 the home games it's bound to get the crowd's going and great atmosphere ian Llewellyn Jan 2018 come Wales bring max back
You have Daffydd Iwan I ve so much admiration for both men ut Daffydd has amazing voice and all his beliefs. Well done Max but I'm sure you ll agree.D.Slater.
Max Boyce In our little valley They closed the collery down And the pithead baths is a supermarket now Empty gurneys red with rust Roll to rest admist the dust And the pithead baths is a supermarket now 'Cause it's hard Duw it's hard It's harder than they will ever know And it's they must take the blame The price of coal's the same But the pithead baths is a supermarket now They came down here from England Because our outputs low Briefcases full of bank clerks That had not never been below And they'll close the valley's oldest mine Pretending that they're sad But don't you worry butty bach We're really very glad 'Cause it's hard Duw it's hard Harder than they will ever know And it's they must take the blame For the price of coal's the same But the pithead baths is a…
I watched my Granda die with the cough - the mining souvenier but in another generation, no one will know. Max breaks my heart like when I watch footage of Aberfan. Where is it being told?
A rather silly relative of mine was having the usual rant about Mrs T closing all the pits so I asked him if they re -opened a local pit if he'd go back down. "Don't be stupid boy how can I with this cough of mine". Black phlegm coughed up each time.
cwm marine colliery.................rem i went to an outdoor party on the outskirts of london.,,,,houseowner....a big name in banking, when asked for a welsh song ...i gave them this.....heads bowed and ashamed ...the party ended
This is not a tale of a nation BUT of the 100'000's up and down 🇬🇧 who went underground to do the dirty work that powered the industrial revolution. Many died and suffered poor health and all they wanted a fair days pays for a day's work and a vibrant community to bring their families up. Many of those communities are still trying to find a purpose decades later. This was a failure of Government (all parties), poor Management and Intransigent Unions. All failed to protect those that worked so hard! Listen and reflect, this could be Bargoed, Balmore or Barnsley!
It is a beautiful and a poetic song, Max Boyce at his eloquent best. But there's some false memory here. Those of us who grew up in Wales when the mines were struggling, and who were lucky enough to read the tragic novels of Richard Llewellyn and (especially) Alexander Cordell, know that coal mining was a curse and that the Welsh are well rid of the fear and the "mining souvenirs."
Yes it would be hard been down a drift mine (scary) the man portrays lot's of things which as a Welsh man you should be proud. I'm English and proud of all what Scotland Ireland and Wales have achieved.
Dan Jones Max worked underground for nearly 8 years right out of school and wrote this song when he got above ground. He is singing this because he lived it, and every second of it is true and heartfelt. Im sure he doesnt give a damn about champagne or socialists.
You obviously dont no what its like to fight withevery brrath if yyou call this crsp this man has done so much for. WALES .IM PROUD TO SAYI USE TO NOHIM. I VE ONLY ADMIRATION.I LIVE HERE I NO WHY HE S A MAN INA MILLION. D.SLATER

I found out a year ago that I have a 1st cousin in Christchurch that was given for adoption in 44. I am in constant touch with her, Da iawn am ddysgu Cymraeg. Where in N.Z are you ?

I’m English, and I’ve loved listening to Max Boyce since I was a kid. Max is a Bard and a gentleman. This song fills me up every time I hear it. I knock out the melody on my harmonica and it still moves me. And when I look at what the English have done over the centuries to the other peoples we share this island with, well... it’s no wonder there’s resentment. Anyway, Cymru am byth!
One of the nicest person on the planet. The amount of money he raised for charity in Wales and never took a penny, a true gentleman.
I was a young lad watching max on tv. When i heard this. It was a real eye opener. Miners lost a lot. And gain a souvenir. Miners cough.
wow...this song reaches back 100years into previous generations ....very moving
Watching this from New Zealand. Brings a tear to my eye
A good friend of mine sings this around the camp fire. Brings a little tear to my eye.
Max's finest moment! Total respect from this Scot to his massively talented Celtic cousin.
Beautifully sung... love Max Boyce... I still have my great Granchers Lamp Check No.1 from Marine Colliery, Cwm... welsh Miners from the valleys, the salt of the earth!
Its about time he was made SIR Max Eileen and Brian
I'm English, never been near a coal seam, but this song bring tears to my eyes.
God bless you Tim from Wales.

Max wrote it. He worked underground for about 8 years IIRC, so he’s very qualified to sing this.
Gets me every time - a beautifully sad, sad song - gosh they went through it , that`s for sure. Brian

I'm Scottish, I'm thinking that the answer to your question is.......that Max singing before a Welsh match would give you an unfair advantage
You have Daffydd Iwan I ve so much admiration for both men ut Daffydd has amazing voice and all his beliefs. Well done Max but I'm sure you ll agree.D.Slater.
Max Boyce
In our little valley
They closed the collery down
And the pithead baths is a supermarket now
Empty gurneys red with rust
Roll to rest admist the dust
And the pithead baths is a supermarket now
'Cause it's hard
Duw it's hard
It's harder than they will ever know
And it's they must take the blame
The price of coal's the same
But the pithead baths is a supermarket now
They came down here from England
Because our outputs low
Briefcases full of bank clerks
That had not never been below
And they'll close the valley's oldest mine
Pretending that they're sad
But don't you worry butty bach
We're really very glad
'Cause it's hard
Duw it's hard
Harder than they will ever know
And it's they must take the blame
For the price of coal's the same

Well, they did beautiful homage to Aberfan in an episode of The Crown.
Likewise, Clare.
Wonderful Memories

Think you've missed my point.
could be that I did. The "champagne socialist" revels in these type of songs, it is true. But it doesn't matter if they do.
