My dad introduced me to Pink Floyd, and while I liked this song I didn't really 'get it'. Not until he passed away. I was driving home and it clicked over on Dark Side of the Moon and it hit me so hard I had to pull over to the side of the road, I was crying so hard! It became a big and important and beautiful part of my grieving process, which is sort of amazing. It is one of the many reasons they will always be my favourite band, they use music to describe the indescribable.
Damn. Now that’s a story.
I am so sorry for your loss. I completely understand this. My Dad also introduced me to Pink Floyd as a kid and they became a firm fave. I won a little creative writing competition writing about what I thought ‘Echoes’ was about when I was 7. They were the first band I saw live when I was 16 when I bought tickets from my first little retail job for me and Dad to go and I cried the entire concert. David Gilmour’s guitar!!!! My Dad and I would sit in the evenings listening to music, so many memories, particularly treasured as he passed 18 months ago. ❤
I'll burry my dad next week, and I think I'll use this as the song while carrying out the casket. He ended up unable to speak, write or communicate, captured in his own head for 11 years, but he could express emotions. He introduced me to PF 35 years ago. So yeah, I think this pretty much captures all the frustrations and emotions...

The artistry in the women's vocals is to replicate the wailing of a grieving person.
Note how much more aggressive it was at the beginning - then took an angry growl tone - then the instruments soften and she comes back to a soft lullabye sound.
We are hearing the stages of death from denial, bargaining, to anger and eventual accepetance and then a lullabye sounding sweet sound as she sings goodbye and goodnight to her loved one.
I went to the 94 show in Oakland, CA as they toured for their Division Bell. One of the greatest nights of my life. As close to a religious experience as I've ever had. By the time Gig in the Sky was over, most of the audience was in collective tears. Magical, spiritual, uplifting and haunting all at the same time.
You don't just listen to Pink Floyd - it's an experience.

Sebs you are one of my favorite reactionists. Some day sit down with your wife and pop some popcorn, shut down the lights and listen to the album "Dark Side of the Moon" in it's entirety. You will not be disappointed. The album was in Billboards top 200 for over 500 weeks. I wish I could donate to you as a patreon but I am just a poor blue collar man. Some great singers have sung this but the original by Claire Torrey stands alone and not just because she improvised it all. There’s a great interview with her on TH-cam. She got the session fee of twenty pounds for this solo that she just created on the spot.
A few years ago, David Gilmour gave her a Million UK pounds.
The original was on the album but that's not her on this video.That's Sam Brown.
You have to hear the original album with Torrey which hopefully you can find one that hasn’t be remastered and ruined by autotune

Thanks must go to Clare Torry for the vocal part - I'm glad she was finally credited for her writing, even though I don't blame PF for following standard practice at the time. I am also glad that the singers here didn't just follow Torry's vocals blindly but added a bit of themselves to it - it's really important in an emotionally personal piece like this. Great stuff.

Sebs, Mate…The Original Dark Side of the Moon, Studio Version, IMHO is the best one. It was completely improvised by British Singer Clare Torry, who was suggested for hire by Alan Parsons who who engineering the album…for one single recording session at a rate of just 30£…She was given no lyrics, very little instruction and was told definitely not to use any words, instead use her voice to emote her raw feelings/emotions on the stages of dealing with the trauma associated with death and dying… 100% Emotion, all done in just one take… She didn’t even know that Pink Floyd had actually used the song on an album, until she heard one day it while in a record store…The number #1 album of all time, and she improved the entire Classic Song…After years of legal wrangling with EMI Records and Pink Floyd, the courts finally awarded her co-song writing credits on the album, and she was also finally awarded the proper Royalties for her work. PS…The man speaking at the beginning of the song, was a recording of Jerry O’Driscoll, the Irish Dorman at Abbey Road Studios…Talking about life, growing old, and not fearing one’s inevitable death…

Took a couple of takes, actually. Clare Torry said she had nothing more to contribute so they stopped. And it took decades before she was acknowledged as co-songwriter and given royalties.
The song is about birth, life and death all without words. It's like the universe is singing.
Actually you really, REALLY need to do the entire Dark Side of the Moon album beginning to end, it all belongs together. You'll get it when you hear it in order.

The background story of this track is really interesting. The man who says "I am not frightened of dying, anytime will do" was an answer a British soldier gave when he was asked if he had fear of returning to the battlefield. The Blonde Female vocalist thought she had a bad audition when she 1st sang because the songwriter was speechless when she finished. This has been my favourite P F track since I bought the Album 48 yrs ago. Timeless & beautiful.

The song is about death. The beginning is the person refusing and fighting death and as the song goes on the person becomes at peace with knowing it is time to go.
The song Time off Dark Side of the Moon goes hard, it precedes this song and the lyrics are reflecting life, it definitely resonates differently for people of different ages, it’s always beautiful to return to after every few years with new experiences.
What may be the only negative aspect to "The Great Gig in the Sky" is the absence of any video of Ms. Torry performing her part during the "Dark Side of the Moon" studio recording session. These women do a remarkable rendition, nonetheless. Tears still well up in my eyes for this song.
Pink Floyd is an experience, legendary, they're on another level from mere mortal Rock bands!
The lady who did this on the album, did it all by herself. Its awsome.

Dark Side of the Moon is an album that you must listen to in it's entirety.
I first listened to it when I was 13years old in 1978.
I can put it on today and enjoy it just as much today.
Highly recommend the same with the album Wish You Were Here.
When I was listening to Pink Floyd it was in a dimly lit room, perhaps some influences, headphones on, the album playing from a turntable.
I see these reaction videos, and everyone is in brightly lit rooms. I understand, you are making a video, but I think how can they truly enjoy Floyd with all those lights on?

Pink Floyd was AOR, Album Oriented Rock, the listener was supposed to put the album on, and listen to the album all the way through. As with a lot of music of the time, the tracks are made to be continuous, one song mixes with the next.
I'd like to suggest the live version of Moody Blues performing Knights in White Satin 💙
music by Rick Wright (keys ) for a movie. Director didn't like it So they had a session singer ( Clare Torey) come in and sing with no lyrics. happy 50 th anniversary DSOTM.
Here’s a piece of advice I give to all reactors listening to Pink Floyd. Many of their albums are concept albums and are really meant to be listened to from beginning to end. Just picking out 1 song and listening to it randomly really does their genius no justice.

Seb my feelings since this song was released was the fear of dying, the pain involved with it to a transition of calm, understanding and acceptance to the realization of the beauty that awaits all in the new beginning. I like your take though too about using it as a reminder that beauty awaits all who suffer through life's difficulties and reach the light at the end.
Just my opinion though but you may want to get back on the treadmill and check out what one incredible woman did that took 3 to do on the 'darkside of the moon' album.
I had to laugh a little about 3secs into the first woman singing how your pace suddenly halved as it immediately captivated you. Oh man! Brother I believe that you would love 'on the turning away '. A song about a societal issue even more relevant today than when it was released. Just for your enjoyment. Pink Floyd will draw you in and you have no choice but to experience the ride. Peace ✌

I'm 64 pink floyd is one of the best bands ever. they will take you places you didn't think your mind could go to. you need to watch that full concert with you wife it's one of the best ever! ❤
This song is supposedly about the three stages of death, (although I’ve also heard that the original encompasses five stages of death), but the three here: fighting, facing and acceptance. When you have this context, it’s transformative

That little snippet of talking is key to the whole song. This song covers the five stages of dying.
When the album this song is on came out…let’s just say at 19 with a lot of friends in our first apt.. the album was played extensively. Many late stony nights, maybe a few acid trips 😎…it was an angelic experience.

All your questions would be answered if you watch Alan Parsons talk about the making of this song in studio. The original vocalist was given no direction. The voice clips are all man on the street type sound bites. Worth the deep dive. I've seen them live four times. including this ensemble.
My favorite part of these videos is when Sam Brown winds up and just wails. Never fails to give me chills.
I played the studio version at my dad's cremation but I prefer this version but the original was my dad's favourite.

PINK Anderson and FLOYD Council, two older black blues musicians from North Carolina are the name sake for the band.

Sebs - you must listen to the studio version of this song on the album The Dark Side of the Moon. It is fearless music a song without lyrics about the acceptance of death. The vocals are by the English singer Clare Terry who used to sing in commercials at the time. Haunting and unforgettable- it reminds us initially we will be angry at losing a loved but somehow in time we will accept it. Only this band could be so original back in 1973/4. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.
Clare Torry did this solo originally it’s worth a listen.
As others have said, Clare Torry improvised the original for the Dark Side of the Moon track. These three women, collectively, brought it up to a higher level - something I thought would never be achieved. It is such an emotional journey and deserves to be at the top of more playlists as this is what music is all about.
I'm going to see Roger Waters in Manchester tonight (10th June 2023). I can't wait. I've had a sneaky look at the gig he did in Prague for the same @This Is Not a Drill tour. An event that all of humanity is destined to experience at one point or another, in one way or another be it our own death or the death of a loved one, depending on each individuals level of compassion and acceptance and dealing with it.
Persistent, traumatic grief can cause us to cycle (sometimes quickly) through the stages of grief:
denial,
anger,
depression,
acceptance.
These stages are our attempts to process change brought along by the loss of a loved one or the acceptance of ones own mortality and to protect ourselves while we adapt to our new reality.
Pink Floyd's Great Gig in the Sky is about such a journey. The opening lyrics start with denial and ends with acceptance.

I've always viewed this work of art as a "Womb to the Tomb and Beyond."
The first section begins at the moment of creation and carries through to the birth and the beginning of wonderment.
The second section is the part of life that is all youth and passion.
The third section is the grace and wisdom that comes with maturity, and then giving those around you the grace of saying good-bye. Then it closes with passing on to the after-life and finding peace.
Since you asked.
For the longest time when i was a kid. I thought that this song was sung by a black woman. This tiny lady got some legendary chords on her.
That was an awesome reaction. If you want more Pink Floyd I recommend Comfortably Numb from the same concert (pulse 1994).

Aahhhh.... anguish! horror! PAIN!! That was the request made of Claire Torry in '72. DSOTM may be THE GREATEST album ever produced! It has evolved a bit over the decades....

The great gig in the sky is about death . Hence the name The first part is about trying to fight against what's coming while towards the end it becomes about quiet acceptance of the inevitable .
