    I think another good topic to cover relating to this for us novices is the difference between the amount of focus points to use. IE: Why use 51 point focus instead of single point focus, and examples of the differences.
    Thanks again!

    Thank you so much Paul. I have been taking photos with a Canon Rebel T7 for about an year. It only gave me shitty soft focus photos that look good only in a phone screen . In any larger screen they were out of focus good for nothing useless pictures. I had been shooting in default ONE SHOT mode all this time. After watching this video I changed it to AI FOCUS. OMG Icant believe my eyes. It improved my photos so much, crisp sharp very well focused photos. I was about to smash this camera on a rock. You saved my good camera and saved money on an other camera as well. Thank you again very much.

    Really welcome the hints and tips.. helped me out a lot.
    I see a lot of vidoes about making photos sharper, but something that made a difference to me, was my screen.
    Many times ive previewed a photo on the back of a camera, only to find a little disappointed once home and uploaded to the PC.
    Ive always edited on my work station PC, but recently ive used a PC which is connected to my TV and found my photos look so much better through the TV.

      @@photogenius Canon lens manual only advise us to turn off IS when using a tripod "to save battery power". Modern Canon version of IS will detect whether you are on the tripod or not and will NOT work against you if you do not turn off IS.
      Of course people using first generation stabilisation of 20 or more years ago had to turn off stabilization when on the tripod.
      IS will help if there is strong wind or earth tremor by passing train that can shake your tripod and camera.

    Great tips! And it's cool that you cover several camera manufacturers. I shot with Canon for years, but I have to admit that Nikon does have a cool LCD display. I won a Panasonic Lumix mirrorless camera on TH-cam, and absolutely love it! Mirrorless is definitely a big improvement to how we shoot. Thanks for another great video!
    EDIT: Oh! And one thing to add to your ideas is that after you shoot, zoom in on the LCD to get a little better look at the sharpness of your photo.

    Paul, I have improved my photos by following some of your recommendations. I enjoy your easy to underside videos. I came across a post of another TH-camr who added something to the "take sharp photos" discussion. The fellow advised folks to remove the UV filter from ones lens. I have a Canon T3i and a T7 and I have always used a Hoya UV filter on my lens. What is your opinion

    • @photogenius
      @photogenius  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brad. I suggest doing some test shots (ideally on a tripod) to see if you can see any noticeable difference between using the filter, and not using the filter. If you can't then I would leave the filter on to help protect your lens.

    What is a good camera setting for taking pictures under a shade tree with a bright back ground and a little dark under the tree?

    • @photogenius
      @photogenius  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This type of situation is always hard to capture regardless of the camera because the dynamic range is so extreme. There are a few things you can do (including shooting RAW for more detail in the shadow and highlights), I would consider using flash to brighten the subject in the shade.

    Really like your videos, you should be an instructor lol j/k. I'm just learning my camera it's a canon T8i and I like how you give examples of what you're talking about. I've watched some other videos and yours is hands down the best I've seen. Thank you for putting these videos out it's really helped a lot. I like taking night scapes and stars and things like that and also sunrise and sunset type stuff and your videos are top notch, I can't thank you enough for really dumbing it down for people like me who learn by watching and listening. I hope you didn't take that wrong your videos are anything but dumb lol. My question is what's a good lens for night scapes or could you make a video covering this type of photography. If you've already covered this maybe I just didn't see it in the list of videos or something. Thanks again for doing what you do and I'm definitely subscribing and telling people about how great your teaching and videos are. Hope you have a great day I'm off to watch more of your work.

    Can I give a shout-out to monopods? They're great if you can find a way to stabilise them using your body which you often can especially if there's somewhere to sit such as a street-bench or a set up steps. They're easier to carry than a tripod and if you're photographing somewhere where tripods aren't allowed you can usually get away with a monopod. In addition as you get older (I'm in my early 70s) your hands develop more shake - monopod to the rescue if you're just going out for a wander around.

    Hi Paul,
    Adding a lot of practical info in one video. Nice job!
    A suggestion for any of your upcoming videos: how to use the different light meter settings (matrix, centre, spot) and how to apply them in different scenarios.

    One question. Why every photographer i have watched on TH-cam, owns an iMac? Is IT better for editing than a normal PC?

      Yes. Colors are more true.

    My Canon m50 doesn't allow me to select individual focus points. It's that normal?

      On the M50 you can select where you want the AF square to be by touching the screen (with touch to shoot off, otherwise it will take a shot!). To re-centre it, press and hold the focus point button (the one on the thumbgrip, below the * button).

    Okay, I'm struggling with this. I primarily photograph jiu jitsu fighters. Plenty of movement, so shutter speed is at a minimum of 640, but more often than not it's around 800. This creates a situation where my only light control is aperture and ISO. If I open the aperture all the way, it's still insufficient light, and this forces me to bump up the iso. Keep it low? Not a chance! I have to crank that bad boy upward of 1500-3500. If left to auto ISO, my camera would go up to 5000 in many instances. I keep white balance at auto. Obviously, a tripod is out of the question. What am I doing wrong?

      My Canon camera T6S/760D has NO NOISE up to the ISO of 3200. My 550D max has NO NOISE up to ISO 1600.
      So we are not in the film era. "Keeping ISO low" is the wrong idea. ISO sensitivity is just digital amplification affected by signal to noise ratio. Like an audio amplifier, you can/should turn up the Volume control rather than "keeping it low" but never so high that the VU meter needle points to the RED Region (where distortions happens)
      Use AUTO ISO but limit the max ISO to the highest where they is still no noise in YOUR CAMERA.
      (In film, ASA/ISO was based on grain size so of course we should "keep it low").

    It highly depends on the glass you use. It’s not all about an expensive camera. Glass! Glass!

    A lot of possibilities. You lens have front focus/back focus issues. You selected the wrong focus point / you focus on the wrong place. You focus and recomposed with a large sensor cam AND at big apertures. The camera's sensor was made like that. The sharpness settings in your cam's (if there is this option) set too low. Lens is entry level, or poor quality.
