Hey Lou, I have the perfect tool for that stem head job. It's called a Kutzall Shaping disc. It goes on a 4½" angle grinder and it would do that whole job in two minutes with no handsaw needed. Once you try one, that chainsaw will start collecting dust!

The thought that goes into each step of the construction is amazing and obviously well worth the energy consumed by Lou's "not so little gray cells" as he orchestrates the construction of this boat! Truly fantastic.

Who would have thought a number 5 plane had a heart beat and a soul. It seems to be the same with every tool Lou picks up, they are his friends and you can see the love and respect he has for them. That's the difference between a tradesman and craftsman. It is so satisfying to watch such skill, precision and patience in a world that is all rip, tear and bust! I can not wait for the next installment, the forward breast hook and aft knees will be works of art. Cheers Lou

6:50 - You can buy special wood carving disks for an angle grinder. And they offer more near work hand control than one can get from a long chain saw blade. One could also muscle and sweat and a hand rasp --- I use a rasp a lot for roughing out such smaller curved areas. Hope this helps.

Have used the discs quite a bit George and Leon Close. I'm guessing Lou doesn't like the amount of sanding type dust blowing around in the shop. I'm that way myself, try to keep the sanding to a minimum, only as needed.
I do agree though, the discs are quick and pretty easy to control.
Was about to post another method here and thought better of it online. Not for the amateur.

Chainsaws are great for 1/4 inch no problem accuracy. I remember getting my first chainsaw and taking it to Snow and Smell. Our wee small school's version of Show & Tell which was changed to Chip n Saw for my 12th birthday. The first question came from our teacher, the Grand Poobah. Start it in one pull?
In 5 months a movie situated in Texas would cause chainsaws to be feared whenever someone's holding a wide open screaming chainsaw over their head while chasing after you. Chainsaws were removed from our school's personal accoutrements accepted list. One Dad helped narrow down the culprit. He fired up his old Homelite and ran towards the parents watching Sport's Day. It was either Mrs. Jake, what the hell are you looking at this here time or the woman with the double bit axe Jake was oogling over as she did stumbled to choose the right F150 getaway pickup.

This band goes all the way up to the top of the bow, although it gets narrower and narrower when it comes over the waterline. Anyway, do you use keel band?? Mine have helped immensely, since wood aint so strong across as it is lenghtwise, and this keelband takes the brunt, when touching the beach or strand...
