Coming back two years later to rewatch this video is a good reminder of how many great volunteers have contributed to the restoration of Tally Ho. Makes me wonder where guys like Finn are now and what they’re up to in their careers.

The quality of the work is just ridiculous! I bet the original boat wasn't built this well! :D

I bet you are right. I have worked in boatyard 's over 45yrs. and seen all types of boats built from scratch to just small repair to major rebuilding. The time Leo spends on a single wood joint is something. If we spent that much time the customers would go crazy from the cost and time. Guess now his boat is now a new boat just following the lines of the original boat ? At this pace who knows when the boat will be done. Plus the overall costs will be close to a half a million. cheers :)

    • @Mercmad
      @Mercmad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

I don't about that, perhaps the 19th and early 20 th Century boat builders were just very careful but the standard of work on the wooden boats our family hand were just like the standard Leo is working too. There is always the old story of the three choices, you get fast, cheap,or quality, you can only pick two etc etc etc .

@@DontCryAboutIt , ya your right seems it's very common for sailboat builds that you buy an old boat and start a PayPal account. Don't really see that in race, day cruiser, downeasters, fishing boats? He's doing a great job though and nice to see people giving him the money needed to build a new sailboat. cheers :)

@@rayfletcher3683 I was thinking something alike, too, once he started lofting and resetting lines.
Two sisterships would probably make the outfit and hardware considerably cheaper, too. And I mean considerably.
You would have to have a customer to purchase her yachtbuilding-style (aka prepaying) though, and boatowners in that range of numbers usually are a mahussively difficult breed to say the least.
I doubt Leo would be willing to deal with that even an hour, let alone through a slow build with volunteers.

Music selection for this episode was exceptional. You are a master not only of boatbuilding, but of video storytelling as well. Aren’t these wonderful times we live in? Where anyone can take on a challenge like this, build a community of support and encouragement, and live out their dreams while we all follow along on a weekly show that is far more entertaining and meaningful than a sitcom or another police drama. I am a sucker for anything DIY, so I tolerate crappy vertical phone video, shaky handheld footage, and haphazard editing on many TH-cam videos that are still worth it for their content. What a joy it is to find videos like these that make you not just learn, but to feel as well. And these video’s existence means others will see them and be motivated to up the caliber of their presentation. “Make it like Leo would” is a worthy creator’s goal. Well done!

I di not see the internet build this boat. I see basically Leo building it. Perhaps you can say: the boat many guys watched being built via the internet.

Bloody brilliant jacking technique on those massive pieces of timber in that assembly. Coming along quite nicely. Cheers!

Leo, don't worry about the people in the comments wining about you getting TH-cam money and donations. I don't mind, your videos, craftsmanship, and content are awesome and captivating. I look forward to them coming in my feed and enjoy watching your project. I'm glad you get some sort of revenue from it. Keep up the good work.

Incredible workmanship. So much time and effort going into this build. It is so awesome you have documented this build so any future owners can see the time and effort going into this and have a respect for the dedication and honor the effort such a build deserves.

Your attention to detail and level of craftsmanship astounds me. It's definitely not the norm these days of a fast buck and just doing enough to get by. Cheers to your passing on a dying art and work ethic.

5 thousand views in the time it's taken me to watch it. Just awesome. These videos are great, so well put together, interesting, inspiring and educational. I'm no authority but I'd say the quality of the fit of these massive stern assembly pieces is verging into cabinet making territory!

I love this series. How is it possible to have so much knowledge at such a young age not to mention his skills as a trans Atlantic mariner. Watching them the dad in me says, "Do any of these kids have health insurance? " 😎

My, you have a good team there at the moment Leo. This is quite a stunning series. However, you do look at little drawn and weary at the start of this episode. Take a break Leo - don't burn out.

I've only ever done one 'big' project in my life (building my late parents a house in Kenya). I'm not a natural-born man-manager or team leader, and I'm not much of a people-person either, so I found the task of delegating jobs and responsibility INCREDIBLY hard. Amongst other things I'm an ex cabinetmaker, so I have a tendency to fuss over the most minute of details in a project, and want to check EVERYTHING thrice. Needless to say, I work best alone. ;-)
So, WELL DONE, LEO, in 'allowing yourself' to get your helpers and friends integrated into your project. I know (sort of) how difficult it is to leave a bunch of guys to get on with a job unsupervised - even skilled, talented, experienced, thoroughly competent ones like your chums are. It's a great feeling when you see that they've done a terrific job and you realise that you CAN trust people... (Sometimes!)

Cheers Tally Ho, shout out from SF bay from an old Boilermaker Iron Ship builder Portland shipyards Swan Island, Or. As a fabricator, from lofting prints, we snap chalk lines on the floor and fabricated pieces must fit within the chalk line. I understand the multi dimensional skill sets needed, but the labor of love mindset for the task at hand building a masterpiece creation of maritime history marine vessel

OK, I admit it. I'm addicted to boat building. I thought I had kicked the habit but, alas, I have failed!!
I finally used the last bits of my Irish Felt a few years ago on a house repair. Love the stuff. Can't imagine how much it costs today. It wasn't cheap back in the 80's.
The drive to PT was nice. I don't know how many times I've driven that.
OK, have you stopped and eaten at Fat Smitty's yet? The place is a legend and the food is great!

Deep into the binge - five to ten episodes a day, strictly chronological. The story thus far: Leo, introverted autodidact loner polymath, learning the human heart is more obdurate and requires more finesse to manage than purple-wood. I will sleep tonight dreaming of frames. I miss Francesca's shy smile.
