These locomotives are the stuff of legend. Designed and built in 1952 and 72 years later they are still doing the same job with nothing to compare it to for shunting and slow moving. They can move 1000 tons on the level and reliable. Great to see them keep up the hard work.
Splendid video! It's so cool to see the Class 08 diesel shunters still soldier on. It's interesting to think that they were first built in the steam era shortly after the original Great Western ceased to exist and now, in 2024, there's at least one working on the modern Great Western Railway wearing that railway's livery.
They are brilliant aren't they. Always a joy to see one, there is one at the DMU depot in Inverness. They can trace their lineage back to the initial batch of shunting locos to this basic design made by LMS in the late 1940s. They look like they are from that era with the cab design and the connecting rods. Even the whistle is a toot instead of the two tone br thing. The fact that they are still in use shows how right the early design was.
Still going strong! Was Gloucester Horton Road’s trip shunter for many years. Fond memories of her on local trip work and trundling up and down to Gloucester Yard. Didn’t know she’d be transferred to Laria though.
excellent shots 👍lovely loco's the only i know of in Kent is at Ashford International sidings nearest we've had to them on the main line was class 20s last year
Nice, vid, thanks. Seen this 08 many times from afar. I wanna get down myself if time, any idea when the sleeper is back to terminating at Penzance? Or has that ship sailed already?
Plymouth North Road station. Must hold the record in the UK for the biggest station with the least train movements. Five to six departures an hour typically 😂❤🚂🎥👍🙏
@@ashthemainman I remarked to the train man on the platform some years about the station being so big with so few trains, and he replied , “ ah but you should see it when it gets busy”. Yes eight trains an hour😂😂 .I guess it was much busier in the days of steam. A tiny place like Ryde St Johns Road has four trains an hour. Thanks for sharing.🙏
@@CoffeePot31 the confusion is the current branding on the great western- being called great western railway rather than before first great western - if you know what a Class 08 is you know this is British Rail Made. So if this was a freight liner Class 08 that’s all you would say.
Class 08 owe the railway nothing. They are the stalwarts of English Electric epitome. Superb machines.

Ex Derby driver here. Fond memories of working the 'Jocko'. You really don't see many out on the main lines these days.
The little shunters are fantastic to watch. I remember seeing them in Leicester station. There is on e on the Great Central Railway in Loughborough.
A rare sight to see a mainline 08
I think only here during engineering works and powercar turning and Penzance maybe now

Don’t change a classic - there a a reason it’s always loco plus a rack of coaches - they can change the formation to fit demand now dow 😅

She was at Old Oak Common for a few years too. I worked on her there.
Love it, last of old school action
Many thanks for sharing this…so wonderful to see
Glad you enjoyed it
Is so cool a small locomotive add all those cars so satisfying

quite rare to see a gronk in a train station nowadays!!!
* railway.
I miss seeing 08 shunters grumbling their way round mainline stations. Such a rare sight these days.
Fantastic
Man this is a pretty cool to still see a Class 08 or 10 at work on the mainlines. Bet it’s not everyday yall see these old timers still running.
There should be more of these little hard working locomotive on you tube .the unsung loco of br
Damn it! I used to live very close to Didcot, now I live in Plymouth. It’s much harder to see industrial trains now. And I miss them…
0:30 very fast train
devious
Great catch
thunder-birds are go-go-go 😊
Cool
I spent hours in the 70s when i was a child watching these shunt in plymouth.Full no hse.
Wow
Classic Gronks ❤
Engine needs attention , sounds like an exhaust valve needs adjusting
I didn't know the Night Riviera from Penzance STILL had a Plymouth portion.
This started from Plymouth rather than Penzance due to engineering
Its got an RG shed code on the cab( Reading)?
Used to be at Reading, as there shunter, transferred when I think a couple of LA’s 08’s were out of use & Reading I assumed didn’t really need an 08
Nice, vid, thanks. Seen this 08 many times from afar. I wanna get down myself if time, any idea when the sleeper is back to terminating at Penzance? Or has that ship sailed already?
Already back to Penzance but will be back again at some point
Lol "fast train" 😂 -they gotta be joking!
Looks like a model 😅 oo guage
Forgot to look, but why no trains just after plymouth, engineering works or something?
Resigning in the Truro area
Now when will GWR sub an IET diagram for one of these 08s? 😅
They did do a tour with 08s and a HST a few years back
Is this 08 fitted with TPWS then?
Yes.
I drove these in Australia,in Victoria we called them F class
Are these British made to like the HSTs we shipped over?
Why does it sound squeaky?
Cause it’s so clean

One to London, one to Penzance, one to Cardiff, one to the north, one to Gunnislake (2hours)

hi, great video, but it is a BR 08 not gwr, pity the westerns are around anymore, we have put up with these confounded 800s which we never asked for,
Well, it is a GWR 08 and the livery is GWR Green - 😜 makes it definitely a GWR British Rail Class 08. Vs. Maybe before First Great Western.
That's not a Great Western Railway engine, that's a British Railways Class 08.
If you watch the video the livery is literally GwR 😀
@@ashthemainman It was built as a BR Class 08, I mean.

By that logic a class 800 you see at Plymouth is NOT GWR but is Hitachi - its ofc both - Livery/operator vs manufacturer
It's not a GWR 08 but a BR 08 it maybe in GWR livery but it's a BR design
GWR is the train operator- it’s a GWR British Rail Class 08 >_
It’s diesel from Thomas the tank engine
More like Arry or Bert
My home city ❤
