2:50 I believe Jeff Jarrett or the Road Dogg ended up winning the Intercontinental Championship. Not completely sure though.
Charles spoke about Owen with positive emotion behind his voice. He seems genuinely happy to have made the memories he has with Owen.
@@md12962 Godfather
Godfather has always struck me as a genuinely good human being. Loved him as papa shango
I know trying to think your the only one who knows his real name shut up 🤣
@@Phoenixsuns1968 huh?
@@ponokanakaIs he? I'm someone's godfather as well.
The Godfather is one of those weird cases of a guy seeming "regular" after his bout with the Wrestling industry. very rare.
Is he papa shango
@maroof1 yes, he was also Papa Shango
@@maroof1yes, he’s Papa Shango, he was also Kama as well
He was one that never tied his sense of identity to his character or the business. He’s obviously grateful for his time and success in wrestling, but it’s not who he is at the core.
The memory of how JR announced that Owen was dead still sticks to my mind till this day. Its unbelievable on how the wrestlers continued to have their matches right after it happened
You probably dont know but beaver teeth kevin Dunn told jr in the headphones and jr had to be professional about it sad man
Because Vince is a trash bag human being.

Same here.
My dad use to work with a guy who order every ppv tape it and give to use to watch the next day i was about 4 and it was very dark vibes i got watching it after finding out what happened.
Did they give refunds? It's the least they could do

1:26 that chill you get when you think about something. He has the memory very vivid in his brain.
One of weirdest things I heard in interviews by wrestlers that were there was by Ken Shamrock. He said he thought because Owen had a reputation for playing ribs on people that it was a work and was expecting Owen to show up on Raw the next night and say it was a joke. And he still wasn't sure Owen was dead for several weeks after and still was expecting to see him.
Literally the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard honestly. I like Ken but CMON
jesus
some people have a hard time accepting tragic events. that sounds to me like a man hoping that his friend isnt dead and will show up and say," it was the greatest rib in wrestling history! woooo"
shit was tragic and sudden af
i can understand that being very difficult to accept .
@@ZeonRemnants Ken was very close to the Harts [Ken trained in Stu Hart's dungeon when he came to WWE. Owen was seen wearing Lion's Den {Ken's MMA team at the time} shirts as well] so I can understand him being in disbelief. Its the same when you lose a relative or loved one. You just can't accept that they're gone for a period of time.
It's called denial, he probably couldn't believe it and was hoping to see him alive
I was there that day Owen hart died...back in Kansas City MO 1999...I was 10 years old...I remember the whole arena just going very quiet when Owen Hart landed in the ring...I'll never forget that day
What was it like for the rest of the show?
@@David_R922 I remember seeing the paramedics come out with a stretcher, that's when we all knew that wasn't a stunt, he actually fell...i never saw the actual fall cause I had my head turned talking to my dad, I just hear a loud crash... turned and looked and there was Owen laid out in the ring... after they carted Owen away, for some odd reason the show kept going, Owen was supposed to fight the Godfather for the IC title...next was the main event which was Stone Cold vs the Undertaker for the WWF championship in which Austin won
@@Chris-go6ds Did you think it was part of the script? Was the crowd still interested in the matches after what happened? Any announcements to the crowd?
@@David_R922 like I said before when the stretcher came out we knew it wasn't a stunt anymore...and yes and no
It's weird that no announcement was made. They just went on like nothing happened.
Yes he dropped the IC title to Jeff Jarrett the next night on Raw during an Owen Hart tribute show since Jeff was Owens tag team partner
The title change to Jarrett would've been two Raws later. On the Owen tribute Raw, it was Road Dogg & Godfather leaving their scheduled match to "go burn one and tell some Owen stories."
Jarrett wrestled Test on RAW is Owen.
@@atifqavi2054 tapped him out with The Sharpshooter
@Meng4Now so the Owen Raw tribute show wasn't the next night? I thought it was.
@@GameTime-yj6qvThe Owen tribute was the next night, the title switch to Jarrett was a week or two after that.
I appreciate that Charles wasn't trying to add details or try and make the story more interesting(as wrestlers love to do). In most traumatic situations, there's chaos and confusion-- and because you're in shock, you often don't remember precise details but just your overall feelings.
whenever anyone would ask me about what i went through, they always demand every single, teeny tiny detail.
“What time was it?”
“What day was it?”
“What’s the address?”
and because i was more focused on the events themselves, everyone laughs and say i am just making it up
The title didn't mean anything on me because I had the girls.
2 things from this: They really wanted the IC title to mean something. And Godfather was so over with the girls that the 2nd highest title meant nothing. I'm still glad he got it though. He will be remembered for it.
Owen Hart is a true legend in pro wrestling......
He really is just watch any match against the british bull dog far exceeds his brother.
Great questions Chris. I completely forgot he was supposed to face Godfather.
The anniversary of Owen's passing brought me here. Just watched Bret vs Owen at Wrestlemania X. Man what a great talent the world lost in Owen. And from what his peers tell, a great guy to boot.
As an aside compare Godfather, a guy who used weed religiously, to all the guys from his era who were on pills and alcohol. It's like night and day. Glad to see Godfather is doing so well. It's always great to see him in shoot interviews. He's really taken care of himself.
I was watching the ppv that night. I still tear up thinking about it. I know it's stupid, but you watch these guys your whole life you feel like they are friends.
I didn´t know that Owen was planned to win the title that night..... damn, it was hard and bitter before..... but that is just damn..... if you think, that the Blazer was a punishment of WWE for Owen for not doing the Debra Storyline and then giving him the title must have been some kind of reward for sticking with the gimmick..... damn, the whole thing just sucks.
It was going to be the beginning of his push. I have also heard he was going to be called the game before it was given to Triple H.
thats whats even worse. the blue blazer gimmick was lame and corny. i wish they would have really pushed the "black hart" angle. once hbk squashed that idea its like they didnt know what to do with owen so it was team him with JJ until having him be a mid card singles guy again.
Owen Hart was forced to do the Blue Blazer gimmick again as a punishment. Vince wanted Owen be in some sort of kayfabe relationship with one of the divas or valets, but Owen refused to do it because he didn't want to be portrayed as cheating on his wife. That pissed Vince off so Vince made him do the gimmick again to humiliate him
It was Debora. And yes I agree it was all to punish and humiliate Owen because he's Brett's brother.
@@mikepuleo9375 I know he's Brett's brother. I'm not stupid
@Melissa Wright I meant the whole business of Vince trying to humiliate Owen was a form of payback. And Owen wouldn't have died that way if he wasn't Brett's brother.I wasn't implying anything else. This whole thing just reeks of blatant gross negligence
That's exactly what it was. WWF/E can say what they want. They trapped him in that contract and less than 2 years after the Montreal thing and Bret going to WCW that happens with Owen. I realized that back then. I was grown at that time but still that was a long time ago and I remember that time period clearly. I also remember the fact he didn't want to be seen as cheating on his wife with Debra.
Vince screwed the Harts
It was Jeff Jarrett on Monday Night Raw and after winning the title he yelled out Owen's name.
he was right about one thing. he did drop it to Jeff Jarrett but it wasn't in Memphis. it was RAW in Moline, Illinois
You're a good scout
1 of the best interviews you ever done. Made me laugh.
Thanks Graham! I loved this convo!
Yeah this was good

Man I remember that promo Owen did before he came out. “ooooooooo The Godfather!”Something I won’t ever forget.
Mental how even watching live, we didn’t even see the fall on t.v. Which is probably for the best anyway. But for such a big entrance, the cameras wasn’t even showing his entrance.
I thought that was pretty weird that they wouldn't have had the cameras on blue blazer when he was making his entrance live on the ppv
I didnt get to watch the PPV that night, but we still put it on the PPV channel and listened to the show like it was a radio broadcast.
Such a tragedy but The Godfather did remember right, The Godfather did lose it to Jeff Jarrett On raw 5-25-1999, I so wish they never put the blue blazer gimmick on Owen, even if you didn’t retire after it I would’ve love to hear interviews with Owen the guy Had a crazy talent and sounds like a funny down to earth person
Godfather dropped the IC Championship to Jarrett on the May 31, 1999 taping of Raw. May 25 was a Tuesday after the Raw is Owen tribute show the previous night.
Such a senseless tragedy. No need for that stupid stunt
@@EddieRivera1988The 5/31 Raw was taped on 5/25. Raw wasn't live every week until Smackdown started in August 1999.
I remember watching that ppv I recorded it on VHS I recorded everything l liked because back then you only had one shot to watch it or it would be gone not like today you can watch TH-cam but JR announcing Owen has tragically died was crazy
Just got done watching relieving the war. Godfather dropped the belt. Rest easy Owen
Rip Owen! RESPECT TO OG GODFATHER
I still, to this day, believe that the show should've been stopped immediately after that fall. More importantly, instead of having Jim Ross announce Owen's death, Vince should've went to the ring himself & said "Ladies & gentlemen, we just got some very, very sad news. We, the World Wrestling Federation community, are saddened to report that Owen James Hart had succumbed to his injuries sustained from this horrific accidental fall. Therefore, we'll have to end tonight's PPV & postpone our WWF Title showdown between The Undertaker & Stone Cold Steve Austin. More importantly, everybody who paid a ticket to come see us will get a full refund." This way, Owen's wife, Martha wouldn't have been upset with him at all & maybe Bret Hart would've been less mad also at him & MAYBE they'd bury their grudges a lot earlier than it did.
Crazy to think that Owen winning the intercontinental title would’ve led into a feud with Jeff Jarrett and perhaps Jeff Jarrett not leaving the WWF in late 99.
1:25 It's still right there in his memory, that physical reaction - I feel bad so many people have to live with that. I'll never forget learning about that as a child and how much of an impossibility it sounded like to fall from so far - incomprehensible to a child. By the way; Not smart of Histrionic Martha to take her CHILDREN up there - 100%
Godfather was one of the best characters during the attitude era.
I understand them being not remember everything cause they go through lot of shit they have life to live too. Btw Owen Heart tragedy just hit me cause it’s like you gave it your all in the ring till the end kinda thing ❤️
He did drop it to Jeff Jarrett but it was in Moline, Illinois 👍
How do you remember something like that
No disrespect, but what surprises me is how no one talks about the fact that this PPV was named ‘Over The Edge’, and this thing with Owen happened.
He indeed dropped it to Jeff on raw in Illinois the next night.
Fitting that he dropped the title to Jarrett, given he was Owen’s best friend and to this day can’t talk about Owen without breaking down 💔
I work in that area to this day,. I am the last one in the building most nights, it is a very eerie feeling know what happened there. I’ve stood exactly where he fell from, I’ve seen the true angle from which he fell and understand why he made the fatal mistake that he did. The arena is very different now but I have stood in the exact spot where Owen fell from and have looked down, how terrifying of a fall it must of been. RIP.
While I was at the time only watching WCW, my boss at Blockbuster was huge into WWF and would bring recorded PPVs to work and we would watch while we closed up, so I didn't know about it until i saw him at work the next evening. Would have been edited on Wikipedia within minutes of it happening nowadays...
I also heard that Godfather was scheduled to drop the IC title to Owen at the Over The Edge PPV.
But anyone know if Owen and Jeff Jarrett were going to feud for the title? I'm asking because it would be odd to see Jeff Jarrett as a babyface.
Yeah I've read that it was supposed to lead to a feud between Blazer and Jarrett over it (with Blazer as the good guy), but also I think they wanted to do the whole "split personality" thing where Owen himself would have asked for a title shot while claiming that the Blazer was ducking him or something. I guess we'll never know for sure, but I think the split personality thing would have been the main storyline.
Jarrett had Debra with him at the time and she was really popular for...the obvious reason so Jarrett was getting cheered by association.
That said, I'd imagine Owen playing both Owen and Blue Blazer would have turned face to feud with Jarrett

This PPV was recorded on the replay because my buddies parents had another show recording during the live airing. So it was edited.

@michaeladams5636 No, that night during the tribute show, it was supposed to be Road Dogg vs. The Godfather for the title, but they both threw the match out to smoke a joint in honor of Owen lol. Godfather lost it to Jeff Jarrett the following RAW in Moline a week later.

I already know that the godfather was supposed to face the blue blazer and had heard that he was going to drop the intercontinental Championship to him but I don't know if that's a rumor or not that I've always heard
God father got the chills u know it’s real
Owen Hart is the only person in the wrestling business that no one has a negative thing to say about him.
SCSA
He dropped it to Jeff Jarrett Jeff screamed Owen's name as the belt was handed to him.
Wwe should have really checked the cable, I always said they should have used two, because a lot of people don't realize it, but Owen got kinda big around that time. I would have secured him with two, u know at that time all those safety cables, weren't tested as much as they are now.
I remember watching this ppv on tv and hearing JR say owen had died.
It's too bad we never got to see the Godfather vs. The Blue Blazer. I remember in the months leading up to it how much we were eagerly anticipating what was going to happen, and how the Blazer could ever win a title since he was a glorified jobber as a masked man. I think if they just went forward with the match, and had Owen shake off the injury the fans would have really appreciated it, and if Owen's condition made his mobility limited, Godfather could have rolled himself up over Owen and done the time honored tradition of passing the torch, and then the ho's would leave Godfather because he lost and carry Owen on their shoulders to the back waving the title about. Now that would be a memory Godfather wouldn't forget about. Instead they took him to the hospital and deprived the fans a wrestlemania moment of a lifetime, or deathtime, as it were if you wheel.
He looks like a nice dude
Wish they kept goin with the Black Hart Owen run after Bret was screwed
Owen was that good when he was beefing with Brett I hated him lol I'm from England and only ever really watched main events like sumerslam and wrestle mania but at 6 year old I thought it was all real. Now I'm in my 30s I realize just how good he was his wrestling skills was top notch and he had charisma as well good man good husband and good dad all around solid dude tragic what happened that night and Vince keeping show rolling is sick rip Owen
I did a little research on Google and godfather indeed lost the intercontinental title Jeff Jarrett. And it was two days after Owen's death
You're a good and faithful servant
I believe he was the middleweight champion wen he was about to wrestle Owen
a girl I was dating ordered this PPV for me… I was going to spend 2-3 hours with her, the broadcast just went black and I ended up leaving… didn’t find out what happened until Monday night raw the next day, I thought Over the Edge possibly C blocking me had been tragic….little did I know….. RIP.

How different life would be if owen never died.... Really makes you wonder you know.
What was Vince thinking allowing the show to continue
$$$$ had already booked da venue az & $ invested n da setup & stuff
N putting Jim Ross back on the air only secs after telling him that Owen Heart died
This is the same man who literally forces his employees to name drop and insult deceased wrestlers’ names for feuds/segments are you really shocked about his decision🤷🏾♂️
He was thinking about the money
Didn't want the audience to riot. No one in the live crowd knew he died either. This was before cell phones so no one knew until either they got home and read it online or saw the news the next day.
He doesn't remember? Didn't he drop the title to Jeff Jarrett?
It was a sacrifice or sabotage.
Owen Hart was on his way out of the business from what I recall in a video I saw. Word travels about footage of Owen Hart falling.
You would be correct. In documentaries about him it was said that Owen really didn't like the wrestlling business. But given that he had grown up around it and his talent it was something he could do and make a lot of money at. He hated being on the road so much and away from his family. His motivation was to make enough money so that he would be able to provide his family with a good life and have money put away for his kids college. Then once he had enough money he was going to leave the wrestling business for good and come back home and become a firefighter so that he would be around his family more. This is one thing I really admire about him. The wrestling industry has so many over inflated egos and people who are doing it all for themselves. Owen wasn't doing it for himself or his love of wrestling. He was simply doing it as a way to provide his family a better life.
Wouldnt it have been messed up if he ran out there and pinned him real quick?
🙏🏻
Spoke highly of Owen
Jeff Jarrett

So sad
Most surprising part of this interview is that the Godfather was married 😂
Did Godfather get paid for that match? I mean it's not his fault the match didn't happen.
I'd think so
That sucks so bad. I actually just learned that Owen was supposed to win the title.. would have been really cool to see him with the oval IC title.
Is the Godfather wearing the old Undertaker hat?
It got even worse when the show kept on going.
Really Now
Weed done fkd up his memory.🥴
Did anyone do jail or held accountable for this
Vince & the WWF had to pay Martha Hart about $10 million and Martha got all rights to Owen's likeness
The real question is did Vince not pay him because he didn’t wrestle
Jarret and Val Venis had to go out and wrestle instead
What kind of question was that Chris? Did they still tell you to go out, was the match going to be changed and you were going to face someone el... yes Chris, yes, he was told to go out after Owen fell a hundred meters to his death and wrestle a different person for the title. They were making the change while they were performing CPR to Owen in the ring.
All of the other matches on the PPV went on, so it seems natural to wonder what their thought process was.
@CVV CLIPS Lol no dude, just no!!!! 😂
Shouldn't he came out first anyway? Then owen comes down to beat him thats how it was supposed to go right? How did he fall before godfather even come out 🤨
They shot a backstage pre-taped promo with the Godfather which I believe was shot earlier that day and played it while Owen was being lowered from the rafters
