IMPORTANT CORRECTION (cause ive seen some vegans say this info incorrectly, its not sourced from animals and its also not exactly frankenfood either)- Brave Robot is NOT lab grown dairy. It is NON-ANIMAL SOURCED and they source their cells from fungal microflora. But their result is EXACTLY LIKE dairy proteins. It has ZERO cholesterol and animal fat. Its a process they call precision fermentation and its not technically genetically modified. They said its more like they direct the cells/flora/etc to go in certain directions. Their microflora source is:
"The specific organism we use is a multicellular, filamentous fungus, which means it has a branching structure that enables it to rapidly expand into its environment and capture any available resources using those prolific digestive enzymes." filamentous fungus is a terrestrial/soil fungus.
Another statement: "You could think of microflora as the agricultural animals of tomorrow. Except they’re not animals at all! If a fungus is “the new cow” for making dairy, then it’s a really, really small cow, with no body, mind, or nervous system."
Read more about it here: perfectday.com/blog/meet-the-flora/
Ive had a lot of Brave Robot flavors and theyre even BETTER than what I remember dairy tasting like. Cant wait to see CHEESE come out next from this process. Plants and this fungal microflora are amazing, so cool!

It seems like Brave Robot's parent company Urgent was bought by a large food technology corporation Superlatus last year. I've also seen Brave Robot vanish from store shelves, and their website is gone. So is the website for Coolhaus, their sister company owned by Urgent; they made vegan ice cream sandwiches sold in Whole Foods. I suspect those events are related. I hope they are not all shut down, but that's what it seems like right now.

My biggest issue with lab grown meat is how it's basically used as an excuse to not do your best now. It's like with fusion reactors, or biofuel. Where a problem is accepted as being real, but the supposed solution is conveniently in the future, meaning I can just keep going as I am until someone else fixes the issue for me.

One correction from a vegan who also studied biology :) Antibiotic resistance refers to the bacteria themselves becoming resistant to antibiotics due to the overuse of certain antibiotics. It does not refer to people becoming resistant to antibiotics. However, the fact still remains that bacteria are becoming more resistant to commonly used antibiotics, in part due to overuse in medicine, overuse in agriculture, etc.

I'm all for lab grown meats - if all "real meat" would be replaced by lab grown meat in the future, that would be a great improvement in reducing animal suffering.
Personally, I wouldn't use lab grown meat myself, as I don't eat meat not only for the ethical, but also health reasons, and lab grown meat, while probably healthier, would still have animal fats that aren't particularly good for you. And I no longer find the thought of eating meat particularly... palatable. It's been several years since I first shifted from eating meat to eating a vegetarian diet with the occasional addition of fish - and closing in on half a year eating a 95% plant based diet, with the very occasional food product with some dairy in it.

I worry about acceptance from the meat eating public though.
It would have to be much cheaper for people to buy it.
And the traditional meat industry will heavily influence the governments around the world against this.

Imagine you wouldn't have to do fake meats which I do like from time to time and you are not hurting an animal and that's the reason I am vegan. Another plus is if you have pets. My feelings toward lab grown meat are very similar to yours, though I do feel more conflicted about it. I definitely wouldn't eat it myself, the thought of eating meat is disgusting to me. At the same time, I can recognize the good that it can cause and in particular I like the idea of it for pet foods, so that vegans (and everyone else) can feed their animal companions more humanely. However, the fact that there has to be a donor animal does not sit well with me because it's not like that animal can consent and as you pointed out the biopsy can cause pain. That animal is still being treated as a commodity, even if it isn't being mistreated and abused before being slaughtered at a young age as is the norm in animal agriculture. You get into a "do the ends justify the means" problem there and I simply don't know how I feel when the means are causing some pain and distress to a sentient being who cannot consent and the ends are saving thousands of innocent lives, including the life of the donor. I don't think it's moral to do that to the donor animal, but it's certainly more moral than animal agriculture.

Don't get me wrong, I am all in for lab meat, so that the meat-eaters can no longer harm/exploit animals and I am not sure if I will ever eat lab grown meat, but I am still wondering, why would we normalize eating meat from the usual animals that we are eating and not from other animals or humans. 😊

For those who insist lab-grown meat is vegan, why? It indisputably is animal flesh. The health risks associated with consumption of the product doesn’t change just because it is produced “sans l'animal”. Additionally, what are the environmental costs associated with producing. Is it cloning process? Does it require donor animals in perpetuity?

For me, I can eat alternatives since alternatives do not require suffering. I’m happy the suffering will eventually be minimal to zero. I hope I see it in my lifetime. However, I also have zero taste for meat. I find the smell alone repulsive.
Also, I have an allergy to animal proteins that led me to be plant-based and then vegan. I can’t consume it even if I wanted to.

Lab grown is good for meat eaters that will not give up meat, at least it seems that it would greatly reduce the number of animals slaughtered, less land needed for meat production. As a long term vegan, for moral and ethical reasons, I would not eat it. It still has all the negatives of meat (cholesterol, fat, etc.), so for that reason, it still is not the best for people. First, would I eat it? No. The flesh certainly not. Like you, the cultured dairy stuff would be tempting. I might try it from grocery store bought items since labeling must be truthful.
I do not trust non vegan restaurants so I likely would not order a product from those places. But I’ve adjusted to the plantbased versions so no real desire to change it for me.
I do believe this is the future and all the knuckledraggers who are “banning” this significant breakthrough in improving this planet will change their tune as they see others have great success with it while they struggle. They will be the equivalent of those that fought to keep whale oil instead of adopting electricity. Footnotes to be mocked.
I think this is inevitable and cannot be stopped by knuckledraggers trying to cling on to the past.
This tech will end factory farming. I can’t help but laugh at those who try and fight this claiming “jobs lost” as the reason. People’s jobs only matter until the employer figures out how to make money without those people. Once the powers that be get a handle on cultured products and how cheap it will be to produce, the jobs will no longer matter. Right now the powers that be are scared and view this as a threat to them so they use government to delay things until they can get their gameplan together. Once they do, they will lead the charge into the cultured products and how future.

*There is no such thing as «not supposed to eat» in nature. Everything has nutriments and everything is edible. Not everything is poison free and easy to digest but life eats anything, that's how it works. We descend from small three top mammals that have been forced into a plants, fruits and small animals diet for a really long time -- hence the molar + raw/cooked meat argument -- but we are meat eaters since the very beginning of the homo genus. Even that our whole species (sapiens sapiens) came to be millions of years after other humans before us started cooking meat so, yeah, eating animal meat is incredibly a thing that homo sapiens do and are supposed to do. This also sounds like a good way to create a new pandemic. I'd be curious to see the numbers on if this has any environmental benefits over real meat, since i imagine the lab takes quite a bit of energy. I think the place this wins over real meat in some ways is possibly less cruelty, and definitely less killing. So, no judgement on meat eaters who choose this route. since its grown in a sterile environment you wouldnt need to worry about the spread of diseases within it! that said if the sterile environment is ruined it could become an issue but with decent regulations and regular testing this would not be an issue :D theoretically it should be perfectly safe to eat without even cooking it, which is incredibly difficult to get safe, tho i know in germany for example certain raw chicken can be eaten. the environmental impacts of industrially farming animals as well as the cruelty really is unimaginable, and i couldnt imagine it could be worse for the environment. even if it was, which everything ive seen has been saying its significantly better, this would require next to no land usage which would let the currently exploited land for farming (most crops go towards feeding animals) be used for literally anything else and hopefully we could just let nature run its course in those areas :)

Whenever we say "comes from an animal" in our explanation of something, that means it isn't vegan. All we need to do to find out if something is humane is to put our own species in their place and imagine another being doing to us what we're doing to the non-human animals. If an alien species was using us to extract our cells and create our flesh to consume, shouldn't we feel a little uncomfortable with that? These animals are here with us, not for us to use in any way. Ethical veganism is not just about avoiding harm to sentient beings, it's about avoiding the use of someone else's body because they deserve their own bodily autonomy, we should have no rights over them and we should only touch them to help and care for them. Every sentient life should only belong to themselves and be able to live their life without their negative rights being taken from them (a negative right is a right not to be subjected to an action of another person or group). This is how we maximize compassion and minimize harm. There are ways that we will be imperfect at not harming others, like crop deaths, taxes that help pay for subsidies in animal ag, stepping on bugs just by going outside your house, etc. But if we can choose not to start something like eating lab flesh or secretions from an animal in the first place, that's the ethical and vegan thing to do. Even if they don't need to take anything from the animal anymore eventually, it's still just creepy to want to live in a world where people are eating flesh of beings who never existed rather than getting to the root of the problem, the oppression that we've done. We wouldn't resolve a lot of the world's problems with lab grown meat, we'd only solve the "product" problem, not the thing that's gone wrong in our heads when we first decided to make a business off other animals' backs rather than learning more about edible plants like how to grow them, store them, prepare them and flavour them.

But what about for sanctuaries and until we close them, zoos? There are snakes, gators, crocs, big cats, marine animals, birds, all needing foods that are now coming from slaughter, and breeding more for slaughter, is naturally what happens. There are also companion animals, like Cats. Until we stop breeding or allowing the breeding of our companions, the number of them needing homes necessitates the having of them in our care.
