The fun part people hate is that helmets are designed to break, to a point. A helmet that doesn't break isn't absorbing a lot of force, its just passing it right through to your head. Its also why cars have crumple zones.
exactly! if i bring something delicate somewhere, like an instrument, usually the case is made out of styrofoam. this is so that the styrofoam breaks instead of the impact being directly transferred onto the contents, the same is true for a lot of helmets.

Actually what your are seeing here is the difference between a "certified" helmet, like most bmx and down hill helmets, which have a high chance of hard head impacts, when they are certified they don't flex and break like the other two, if you are wearing one of those your about to have a bad time

In reality the shell does deform elastically to absorb energy but it returns to the same shape and can withstand a second blow at the same location (for DOT and Snell tests). But I agree that this helmet appear too rigid even though we can't really see how much it is deforming. In helmet tests, the deformation is very local to the impact zone.

The last one could actually be weaker because it might not be despersing force properly, and that energy has to go somewhere; and what part is your helmet attached to?
@@deadersurvival4716 almost correct, no helmet should shatter into pieces (blow apart) like the first 2. you wouldnt want plastic shards piecing your skull. the inner foam is designed to spread and soften the impact, and any helmet involved in an accident should be disposed of afterwards. the outter material also absorbs some impact but shouldnt shatter, shattering doesnt take much impact away at all.

First helmet I ever wore, rode 200 yards, had a car cut me off, sent me head down on a railroad track, creased the helmet. Had no idea you were supposed to replace, I wore it for the next 8 years like an idiot.

Single impact helmet are designed to save your life in a high impact catastrophic accident like a motorcycle crash. There are a few multi-impact helmets but they're very new technology and are still recommended to be replaced as soon as possible after an incident or two since there's no way of knowing when the helmet will lose its foam protection. Stay safe out there everyone.
