My burn was water splashed into hot burning frying oil. I was making Southern fried chicken.
When water falls into hot oil, it explodes.
The hot oil exploded all over my neck, chest, and right arm. Painful.
That was in January, 2009. It's healed, but my neck skin is a real doozy. It's not as elastic anymore. Have to stretch often.
      Glad his burn healed.

When it comes to severe burns pain is actually a good sign. It means you haven't burnt it so bad you've destroyed the nerves.

Id rather stab my hand with a screw driver again than burn it honestly. Burns throb which will keep you awake at night. I had to resort to putting my hand in a bucket of ice water one night after doing something stupid, because it wouldnt let me sleep.

@@nunyabisnass1141 you have to be really careful doing that. Due to the nature of burns and extreme pain, the pain can basically hijack your sensory nerves and get sole use of them. Which means it’s *very* easy to give yourself frostbite on top of the burn, which is a quick route to some very permanent issues. That’s why they tell you to use running, cool (not stupid cold!) water.
Any severe burns should be checked out by the local ER/A&E to treat any possible nerve damage, reduce the risk of scarring (burn scars not only look bad but can tighten up and seriously restrict movement down the line), and get ahead of potential infections. If the burn is on the edge of what you think needs immediate treatment, try a walk-in clinic or Urgent Care center. If it’s too much for them to handle, they’ll send you to the right folks.

I know what its like to have a severely burned hand, though mine was from scalding hot water taking a large percentage of skin from my left hand.
I resorted to wearing a surgical glove 24/7 while the tissue damage healed and the skin grew back; I got lucky, no lasting damage and no scarring.

I had a similar burn this past spring from a similar accident. Being in the US, I had to go buy my own burn cream and non-stick bandages, do my own daily wound care and evaluate whether it was healing correctly or if I needed to go back to the physician. Glad you are getting better care than I did! My friend had a burn on her hand from a kitchen accident in a hospital, it took her months to heal properly with the physical therapy to stretch the finger ligaments to full motion again - do your PT like religion!!

Ditto. Then I started really checking to make sure it wasn’t at a weird angle- there’s a form of temporary hand paralysis called Radial Mononeuropathy.
It can happen to anyone at any time- it’s usually caused by falling asleep with your head propped on your hand. But it can take 3-6 months to recover from. I had it once, got crazy lucky and nearly recovered in 3 months, fully recovered by 4 months. But I was an in-home caregiver/hospice nurse (mixed and hooked up IV meds/lines all day long and performed ventilator care, so I was off work for at least 2 or 3 weeks.
The reason I checked the angle of the hand is that they initially cast it just like that but with the hand flexed up. It prevents tendons from shortening while the hand is paralyzed.

Great job Craig!!! You did a great job!! You should be very proud, even though Graeme was there if you had a question or doubt about a hoof, you were the one doing the work. A few more days like that one, and you'll have more confidence in yourself as a Trimmer. Great job mate!! From Ontario, Canada, Jenn.

Oh man... I did something similar when I was 18.. lost my eyebrows, eyelashes, and bangs. Melted my coat, burned my hand up and burned my face. Right before a big archery competition! Well, everything worked out and aside from wearing a bandage over my lips so I could shoot, I don't have and scars and took first place at the competition!

I was engulfed in an engine fire when I was younger as well. Was the first time I was thankful for USGI regulations for fire resistant materials (aka materials that won't melt onto you). Was hot enough to burn me but the cloth didn't burn and didn't melt so I was seriously protected from the flames and could disrobe to get the cloths off me that were now scorched and hot enough to blister skin on their own. Dancing like a mad-man getting it off. When I raced I always wore my nomex undies and gloves. Fire is no game.

@@meatybtz - My neighbors home blew up thanks to a bizarre set of circumstances that included gun powder, a spark, and a previously unnoticed gas leak. They were inside. Two were less than two feet from the flash point and were seriously injured. One neighbor wanted to put a coat on the injured child, another thought they should try to remove the scorched remains of her shirt. (It was 20 degrees F that day, hence the coat.)
I told them both fuck no, found her something clean and warm to stand on (she had no shoes on), then once the ambulances came and took the two injured people away, I had a serious talk with a few neighbors about proper burn protocols and how the kind of fabric should was wearing (work out clothes) could literally fuse to very fragile skin underneath.
They both got crazy lucky. The parent involved has permanent brain damage though it’s shockingly minor (we assumed there’d be memory loss and while there’s a tiny bit, once the initial injury healed about 10 months in, the lingering effects aren’t as bad as docs had estimated). The parent also has significant hearing loss, about 40%, and some lingering issues with their hands
The child’s burns were more spread out so while they were all 2nd and 3rd degree, no one patch of 3rd degree was overly large. They got sent to the regular children’s hospital, not the burn hospital across the street, which was an a great sign. Their brain injury was less severe and kids brains are all but miraculous thanks to neuroplasticity, so no permanent brain damage. I thought they’d lose all hair- it was crunchy and fused together when I “held” them. Apparently their eye lashes did have to be cut as the top and bottomy were fused together, which was easy to see up close. But the rest was salvageable after a ton of conditioning treatments.
