Nuno Bettencourt is a guitar god. He has some of the best solos of all time. This song came off their 2nd album Pornograffitti which they were out to prove that they weren’t a one trick pony. The album had a little bit of everything on it.
Extreme stole the show at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. A lot of it due to the fact that they were heavily influenced by Queen and understood them. Got this album on CD. This song was everywhere in the summer of 1991.
Lost my wife of nearly forty years three months ago. This song is killing me. We could set beside each other for hours without speaking a word. Nice review guys.
What really sticks out to me on this song is the great vocal harmonies. For something completely different from Extreme - Play With Me Live Boston 2009.
They came out with a new album last year which is phenomenal!!! So many great songs on that album you need to check out like #rebel, Rise and X out. Rise in particular has a guitar solo in the center that is a dedication to Edward Van Halen.
Just so you know, because based off this, you wouldn't know it but, this is a "Rock" band! Lol You must do their songs "Get The Funk out" and "Play with me". They're both fire!! 🤘😎🔥
I was gonna say that Get the Funk Out is a more quintessential representation of Extreme. Also, this version is the “radio ready” version. They have another that’s a little longer with a less cheesy ending, but both are good! Cheers!
I always thought it was a dead giveaway that this wasn't their norm in the video when it started by turning off the amp and the drummer putting down his sticks. I felt it made that clear without words.
I remember my first boyfriend Anthony requested this for me on Solid Gold radio in South Africa…it was in 1993 and I was 15 …it feels like a lifetime ago!
GUYS… At the 1992 Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, Extreme did a MIND-BLOWING Queen medley! The ENTIRE thing is 20 minutes long. (It goes by as FAST as Queen’s 20-minute set at Live Aid!) It’s challenging to find a video of the entire performance, tho… Most videos on YT are only of a SHORTENED 10 or 12 minute version. There ARE posted on YT (last time I checked): One video of the entire 20-minute medley AND… one channel which has the whole medley posted in TWO 10-minute halves.) Honestly, I thought that Extreme’s medley was the BEST part of the whole tribute concert… And Brian May paid them the ultimate compliment, when he introduced them, saying: “These guys, probably more than anyone else, REALLY get what Queen have been about and what Freddie has been about all these years.”
Fun Fact: Gary Cherone joined Van Halen as the lead singer in 1996 after they had a falling out with Sammy Hagar and he did one album with them in 1998 titled Van Halen III. Gary is such a talented singer, so glad you guys did this song. This was a radio favorite of mine when it came out. They played it A LOT TOO! Thank you for your reactions and good vibes 💞
If you look at the technical aspect Cherone was probably the best vocalist but it just didn't work out. Had Mitch Malloy for a short time before David Lee Roth came back
A lot of people who bought the album because of this song and Hole Hearted were shocked at the rest of the album. Check out When I’m President, Get The Funk Out, and He-Man Woman Hater.
This song is very touching. I never got the meaning completely when I was younger, but the feel of the song bled through. Now that I am 50 it makes better sense. Bittersweet but hopeful.
My story on this song... when it first came out, it reminded me of a time in high school in 1983 when I was going to tell my girlfriend that I loved her (she's now my wife), but we were interrupted by her brother coming into the room. Here's the thing... her brother is now a music engineer and I later found out he engineered this recording!
The record company was not going to release this song as a single, bcz they didn't think it was going to be a hit. So the guitarist Nuno Bettencourt flew to the record companies main office to talk to them about their decision, and Nuno threatened to break their contract if they didn't release this song as a single. So, the record company reluctantly released this song as a single, and the rest is history. Also Nuno is one of my favorite guitarist, as well as is Extreme one of my favorite bands of all time. They have been a band on and off for about 35 years and only have six albums. Reason for that is they don't like having throw away songs on any of their albums. So, they take their time on releasing new material. Got to respect that. Their not just cashing in on their popularity. They are true artist and creating great music.
Nuno also had a 4yr stint as guitarist for Rihanna on her world tours. Gary had 2 bands - Tribe Of Judah and Hurtsmile. After their Waiting For The Punchline album they needed a break from each other. It turned into a 13 yr break. The problem for Extreme was because of their versatility the record labels and radio stations couldn't pigeon hole them into a genre.
@@rogerdaly6326 Aside from the fact that Nuno is a fellow countryman of mine (cough cough) I really liked the way he replied when people were saying he was sort of "dumbing down" by playing for Rihanna and Nuno said her music is not simple, or words to that effect.
This was at the height of the "MTV unplugged era". Suddenly every band wanting to show their true, undistorted, unplugged talent. This song was a thunderclap that year. Eric Clapton, the Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and all the grunge bands did the same. This song however, was just an acoustic song on a hard rock album. This is the only version I am aware of.
Nuno Bettencourt has been touring with Rhianna for a number of years. Extreme came out with an album last year, check out the song Rise for Nuno's guitar work & solo...it won't disappoint.
Henry Garza (Lead Guitarist/Vocals) Would write this song after the loss of his infant son to S.I.D.S.,, Los Lonely Boys "Heaven"..A MUST HEAR Grammy winning track. ❤
Gary Cherone (lead vocals) and Nuno Bettencourt (lead guitar) are well-respected among their fellow artists. Extreme put out a new album least year (2023). Several amazing guitar solo from Nuno.
I remember this came out while I was in middle school…every girl loved it I mean every girl…one’s that were into different music still loved it..I recall a time walking into one of my classes before it started and these girls were writing the lyrics on a chalk board..at the time I didn’t get it but now I do lol
This triggered the most returned CD of all time for the music shop I worked in. So many bought their CD thinking all of their music was like this! 🤣 Check out their songs "Get The Funk Out" and "Hole Hearted" for a deeper dive.
They came to Utah in concert when this came out. There was a news story saying, people bought tickets not knowing what genre they sang. Only knowing this one song. I didn't go. So I don't know what metal band was on stage before them. But. For some strange reason(s). There were people walking out. I still find it hilarious.
There was a big back-to-basics acoustic movement in the early 90's. Mainly ushered in by MTV's show Unplugged where popular artists did stripped down versions of their hit songs. Many bands started doing quieter acoustic ballads, Extreme was right in there too. Their song Hole Hearted is a more upbeat acoustic song. They have many great rockers as well. Such a great band. They're still around too!
This is their song, they wrote. It just turned 33 years old. It not only hit the #1 Billboard 100 but it hit #1 in 94 countries. Gary, the lead singer can simply sing the freaking phone book and Nuno, the one playing the guitar is one of the best guitarist around. He lists Brian May in his top 5 list of best guitar players and Brian May as long mentioned how great Nuno is. You should check out their performance at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, they were all so excellent and you can see the rest of the band that got up and walked off.
Extreme warmed up for ZZ Top in 1990 in Utah. My little brother, wife and I were right next to the stage and they came out and sat on the stage in front of us and I loved it. Up until then I wasn’t into there heavy sound. Then ZZ Top came out and blew us away. This is a great song!
I met Gary and Nuno while working at a celebrity fund-raising event. They were incredibly nice, normal cool guys! I had the duty of driving them and a couple of their friends, back to their hotel (and to the airport the following morning) but they were really hungry and we ended up hitting a What-a-Burger at 1:00 AM. Lots of chatting and laughing along the way! Like I said, they were really cool guys!
The only other version of this song that I know of is a cover duet by Nuno Bettencort, the guitar player in this video with Steven Tyler (Aerosmith). It is SO good!
Some of their harder songs have been mentioned, but here are some others: Mutha (Don’t Wanna go to school today), Kid Ego, Teacher’s Pet, Decadence Dance, Rest in Peace
Yes this song was huge, here's other songs from them: Rest In Peace., Hole Hearted, Stop The World, Mutha (Don’t Want To Go To School Today), Suzi (Wants Her All Day What), Decadence Dance, When I First Kissed You, Play With Me, He-Man Woman Hater
Great song. The follow up album for these guys was called something like Three Sides To A Story. It came with multiple cd's. Side A was "Your side", side B was "my side" and side C was "the Truth" or something like that. These dudes had a vibe.
I hope you dig deeper into Extreme's catalog. Such an incredibly talented band, and Nuno Bettencourt remains one of the best rock guitarists to ever pick up the instrument. They are still making music and touring today. This song does not represent their catalog, but it isn't out of place, either. They are pretty diverse. Heavily influenced by Queen, Aerosmith, Van Halen, The Who, and The Beatles. Gary wrote the lyrics to this song from the perspective of one of his ex-girlfriends.
Sometimes When We Touch- Dan Hill. B&B another super chill amazing ballad from 1977. Lyrics and Dan’s voice is amazing. Huge hit also on the billboard music charts. Love to see you react to it!!
I just heard a song “get the funk out” from another channel, and had no clue it was them. I only know them as hard/soft rock band but this will blow you away(totally different sound)
Nuno Bettencourt is one of the absolutely best guitarists out there, he's even been on tour with Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai and Zack Wylde. You really should check out Decadent dance from the same album as More than words. "Pornografitti".😊
Nuno Bettencourt , the guitarist is an absolute shredder if you would like to check out some of their other none acoustic tunes. He's along the lines of Eddie Van Halen in terms of style which he btw looked up to, but of course EVH was head and shoulders above the rest.
Stylistically, their music is all over the place, though mostly rock. There's a lot of Extreme to get into, but some of their brand new stuff is awesome. They dropped an album last year after like an 18 year hiatus. Check out "Rise" to see some of Nuno's guitar mastery among the others previously stated.
Hole-Hearted (also off this LP - Pornograffiti) had reached top 5 on the billboard top 100. Although brilliant - The band is far more diverse than what one might glean by listening to the those two acoustic songs
I learned a hard internet lesson because of this band.I belong to a Gary Cheone (main singer)fan club and I made a very inappropriate comment about him(I would lick him like a melting ice-cream in the middle of July).Who would have thought that a famous singer actually follows random fan pages. He saw my comment and actually responded to it.I am so happy I didn't have to look him in the eye. I would have just died from embarrassment (nearly did anyway)
Nuno Bettencourt is such an incredible guitarist. Gary’s voice isn’t particularly to my personal taste, but I thoroughly understand why others rate him so much
I got this on Vinyl when it came out. A timeless Classic song from a timeless Classic album. So while the do have somewhat of a sound, the are little bit like Queen, who's one of their main inspirations, in that there Extremely diverse I regards to genre. The album Pornograffitti even has Frank Sinatra style "easy listening" song. With their new album six and not least the song Rise, they made some the most exiting rock in a couple of decades. In some ways reminiscent of Pornograffitti but with a more modern sound to it. These album ar must listening and well as Their Queen M medley from the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992.
Great reaction to a beautiful track! This is often (and unfortunately) the ONLY song many people know of Extreme! Which is a shame, because these guys rock! HIGHLY recommend: Decadence Dance, Am I Ever Going To Change, Stop The World, Get The Funk Out, Hole Hearted...and especially Midnight Express (guitar instrumental). Have loved these guys since the early 90's! Cheers.
Nuno Bettencourt is like if EddIe Van Halen and Brian May hade a son, and Prince being his Godfather - I am ABSOLUTELY 100% a fan of Extreme and love this band; they are not glam.rock....the Nuno interview with Rick Beato is fantastic..think of Creed before Creed, very deep and thoughtful, thought provoking and fun! I saw them also in Cologne Germany last year and will see them again in Italy in July...last- listen to Hurricane it will absolutely make you cry once you realize what they are singing about .. top 6 (one from each album) are Play with Me, Pornograffitti, Rise N’ Shine, Hip Today, Slide, The Mask
Such a great song. I love the guitar work. It’s such a simple song yet so powerful. They were smart to make this an acoustic set. Jimmy Fallon and Jack Black did a cover of this for Fallon’s show. They copied the video. They did a great job with it. Of course Jack Black had to add some of his expressiveness. Jimmy Fallon does a great job honoring these artists. He and Paul Rudd did “King of Wishful Thinking” originally done by Go West.
You may have heard the tune before in a song called - I Never Told You, by Flip Da Scrip. They used the music to their Hip Hop type song. This song & Hole Hearted were my 2 favorite songs off the Extreme II Pornograffitti album. Really nice reaction guys. 😄🦘
Thanks for reacting to this. You guys seemed to really like Van Halen. You absolutely need to react to other songs from this band. While they are very diverse and able to play soft songs like this, They actually kill it with high energy and rocking stuff. This put thwm on the map in the early 90's. But, their energetic stuff is even more impressive. Please consider reacting to songs off of their new album that came out in the last year: I recommend "Rise", "#Rebel", "Banshee", and "Other Side ofbthe Rainbow". For excellent older stuff, try "Play with Me" or "Cupid's Dead".
This is the song that broke the band. They were a hard rock act, and the lead guitarist Nuno hated that the band would put out such a soft ballad. Wanna hear GREAT Extreme? Check out Rest in peace, War heads, Politicalamity
My sister introduced this song to our mom and me: we had paid no attention to then-current music, and I said it was too loud and hard to listen to. My sister said: listen to this: they turned off the noise and just sang. And she was right.
Nuno Bettencourt is a guitar god. He has some of the best solos of all time. This song came off their 2nd album Pornograffitti which they were out to prove that they weren’t a one trick pony. The album had a little bit of everything on it.

Agreed
Nuno is a beast of a guitar player!!!!! Get the funk out should be next in this journey!

The one time when David Lee Roth fans and Sammy fans united. Both sides agreed that that was truly the worst Van Halen.

Lolol....nice
This song is a gem. Especially to us 90s teenagers.
You should check out the Jack Black and Jimmy Fallon version. They nailed it.
You have to hit the total opposite of this, their rockin banger Get The Funk Out, an unbelievably cranking song.
This song was big for weddings in the early 90’s, played at mine though she n I split after 9 yrs
You may have heard the tune before in a song called - I Never Told You, by Flip Da Scrip. They used the music to their Hip Hop type song. This song & Hole Hearted were my 2 favorite songs off the Extreme II Pornograffitti album. Really nice reaction guys. 😄🦘
These guy play music from one extreme to the next check out Rise from their last record that came out last year
Thanks for reacting to this.
Check out their "Get the Funk Out" it shows the glam funk you were talking about.
