I mean, Dark Knight never meant to be the opposite of Paladin. It was meant to be the Chaotic Good to the Paladin's Lawful Good, the Anti-Hero to the Paladin's Hero.

I picked dark knight over paladin for the whole "get shit done aspect" as well as the fact that through the dark knights story your character was allowed to be more true to themselves, speaking how they really feel and whatnot. For example in the level 60-70 questline (spoiler)

The Dark Knights have more to do with the Nightsisters from Star Wars than they do the Sith. The Nightsisters are another dark side aligned force cult like the Sith, but the difference is in how both factions approach the dark side. Sith fully surrender their lives, minds, and sanity to the dark side in exchange for power. Nightsisters undergo initiation rituals where they have to resist falling to the dark side, exert their will over the dark side, and bend the dark to serve them.

It was the philosophy of the dark knight that attracted me to them in the first place back in HW, as well as those great swords they wielded like one of the most popular great sword users Cloud Strife, I later learned as I made it into Ishgard and picked up DRK that they have quite the philosophy behind their roles as well as down to their very weapon choice, and it all felt right to me.
