    Why not show in the order entry how to automate it. The order editor has the “trail stop” option then you
    choose the stop type “Mark or Bid” The Mark has sub options such as ( Last, Bid, Ask, Ask/Bid, Mark and Avg Price). Beside that it has the +/- 0.10 which you can adjust so it’s pretty close to automation. Why not show an example?

    I like the theory you present here, Riley, but I am looking more for the actual mechanics of setting up these types of trailing stops in TOS order entry window. When you talk about a previous video early in and point to the upper RH corner of the screen where the tag appears, there are multiple videos that appear in the window and none seem to match what you said.
    It would also be more helpful if you would put a specific link in your expanded description to the actual trade video you referred to in this video.

    New to futures, and never used a stop loss.
    - If you use a trailing stop loss and had a huge gain, then it hits your last stop loss, you still get all your gains right? Or do you lose all gains if you get stopped out?
    - I dont get why anyone wouldnt use a trailing stop loss every time. If you get to keep the gains you made before getting stopped.

      So generally with these kinds of trailing stops you can't 100% automate it. You need to either put in a limit order yourself that you slowly move up with the stock or you can have an alert set where you want to sell the stock and get an alert sent to your phone so you don't have to look at the stock charts all the time.

    Trying to understand it better. You mentioned using 8 EMA for trailing stops. So if a trade goes below 8EMA, we should put stop. If your example, trade went below 8 EMA couple of times. Will you put stop at the first occurrence itself, or do we have some strategy on that too? If we put stop on first occurrence, then we will miss lots on upside in your example trade. How we know when to use 8 EMA and how?

  • @jeffdiener9368
    @jeffdiener9368 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for the great videos Riley! I'm wondering -- like in the Boeing example, if you have a stock that's trending strongly, do you actually trail a stop exactly at the previous day's 8 EMA level (at close), or do you set your stop something like 1 ATR below the 8 EMA? Seems like having a stop directly on the 8 EMA would get stopped out too much. I'd love to know your preferred settings from experience.

    Good video, thanks for these. Question. How do you decide where to place your mouse when you draw the fib sequence? Seems those tiers are vital to showing support/resistance levels, but how do you decide where to actually position the fib rows? Second, you do have a video that explains what the TOS trailing stop % and trailing stop $ are, and how they are used?

    • @RileyColeman
      @RileyColeman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Drawing fibonacci definitely takes practice! Its generally from the most recent significant high to the lowest low after that. This video should help with that if you want more explanation.

Then I want my trailing stop to say 50 cents below the 8 EMA and not the current price. Thank you for any help you can provide.

    I would like to draw the fibo on the reverse so the more we get into the trend the trailing stops gets closer. also, the idea that it came back to the support level to take your stop is not acceptable. i would ideally want a clear rule like ...... to trail to a level when price breached the next level.

    Are you able to use bracket or advanced orders in TOS to actually set these different trailing stop strategies up when you are in a stock? I watched your other video but its just your basic trailing stop, none of them show how to set the 8EMA or Fibs as a marker for TOS to know when to sell or buy on the stock.

      You can't set it up to automatically move to those locations you have to move it up manually yourself. So I just use a stop loss order initially then move it up as I see the levels change or it pass through levels.

    • @otacon1024
      @otacon1024 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RileyColeman Well... yes and no :D If you're trading manually on one of these platforms, then no, you can't do it automatically. Hell, many don't even offer percent-based trailing stops. If you're algo trading, however... everything can be automated.

    What's the difference between the SMA and EMA? Are there particular time frames where one is better than the other?

    • @RileyColeman
      @RileyColeman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simple moving average takes each data point or candle and sets an equal weighting to it when forming the SMA line. An exponential moving average takes the most recent points of data and gives more weight to them. What this does for the lines is a EMA line will react to movement quicker in a stock and a SMA will be slower to react. There isn't time frames that the different lines work better in it's more about preference of what you want.

      When trading options I don't like to use a trailing stop on the actual option because the price of options can be harder to set a trailing stop on when trying to use the chart as a trailing stop. But if you want to I'd just have a trailing stop that is a certain % of the stock that allows you to keep a decent amount of profits if the stock decides to go against you but also gives you wiggle room.

    It seems like brilliant logic and as a newbie, I ask: do you have different moving averages set up that defines a trend per certain stocks? .... I bought a course who uses price action with two ema's and a target that uses a ("stop-limit order" as an entry) plus a("use limit order" as a reward), plus a ("stop market order" as the stop). His idea is more for day trading in the first several hours. Any ideas to improve on this concept, I would sincerely appreciate it! ....I am using the Think or Swim platform.
