Hello Jason. I stumbled upon your channel a few days ago. I watch quite a few astronomy/telescope/amateur astrophotograpy related channels. I have to say that I think your channel is a treasure trove! Really, what a beginner needs! Many channels assume that you know a lot already or have thousands of dollars to spend... Id recommend PIPP -> Autostakkert3 for stacking -> Registax6 for wavelets (sharpening and denoise)...could skip PIPP if AS3 can open the raw file, otherwise use PIPP to output a .avi 🙂

I've been looking forward this one! You mentioned that there isn't enough information for beginners on astrophotography software, and I agree. If you happen to delve deeper into that, I'd definitely be interested in your perspective.

Great Test Run Jason!! The Moon looks Great!! looks like your on the right track, you did it right, but You need to Decrease the display Resolution in Sharpcap to get High Frame Rate!! Record The AVI and Process them Autostackert 2 (Use Drizzle feature in Autostackert 2)!! You can Use Histogram Tool in Sharpcap to Get the Right Exposure Settings. sharp caps live stacking feature can help to capture DSOs too!!

Hello Geoffrey. Yeah, they are great for the money, you can't go wrong really.. One little update though, the 105 is purely for lunar and planets unfortunately not suitable for deep sky.
People have this misconception that astrophotography is an expensive hobby. That's not necessarily true. This is a perfect example of how this hobby is actually quite affordable.

Not sure why people complain about a 35 pound camera. Great for learning the basics. I use mine for hydrogen-alpha Solar and planetary imaging. One thing that is relevant, at least for me is the old USB 2, with my older dedictaed astro computer. Nice, no fuss vid, thanks :)
Wow, those are some great results for a first time astrophotographer! It'll take a lot of practice to get used to focusing that thing perfectly though. Maybe you should look into a electronic focuser or at the end of the day just putting a really long wrench on your focuser wheel and slowly turning it. Clear skies!
Hello Nexpreet, thank you, yes it could have gone a lot worse. Quite right, focusing is a bit of a issue, especially with my eyes lol. If I do get into this side of the hobby more I will definitely look into getting a electronic focuser. clear skies friend :)
finally got to use my new telescope last night , got amazing view of the waxing crescent , waited till 2 am to point it to the 2 gas giants and the clouds rolled in so..... still waiting ... clear sky to you my friend

For a first time attempt on a scope with only R.A. drive, pretty amazing.
The software will come with practice, there is advise further down which I am sure you have read, one thing I would try and advise is try to keep the gain down whilst keeping a high frame rate you can do this by using a smaller resolution, not sure what the 105 (reminds me of my group set on the bike) my ZWO ASI 120MC has a max resolution of something like 1200x950 but changing that to 320x240 vastly improves capture rate.
You touched on it when you mentioned faster data rates, this is the difference between USB3 and 2, but you need to plug it into a USB3 on the computer, otherwise it reverts to USB2, I am not sure what that means to capture rates.
The more frames you can capture in a given time gives you a better chance of capturing those still moments.
You will be doing a video on your new computerised mount and how to set that up if the photography bug bites.
You mentioned it doesn't take much for it to be off. What I do if the mount isn't going to the object is to use my full frame dslr then centre, then switch cameras then refocus re-centre if needed, then I can, pop in a Barlow if the seeing is upto it.
I have just had to reinstall my system after a psu failed back in the spring. I am fortunate in that I have a 10x6ft shed and open views east to sw, the computer runs on rubber bands like yours but this has 3, but being a desktop it has the ability to be upgraded cheaply, USB3 expansion card being an example. The mount is permanent in the garden so just need to plug power and two USB cables, one to the mount and one to the USB hub, which then controls cameras guide and imaging, you have mentioned a motorised focuser, I have the exact same one, the motor is fine but the controller left a lot to be desired there is however a wireless unit you can get which replaces the handset, two versions one is just a remote module and another which can be controlled in software, either way you can be at your computer whilst doing the focusing.

I am a beginner too and at times gets frustrating. But we shall endure! Finally been able to get my Android to work with an adapter. Thank you for that help there. I am thinking on purchasing the SVbony 105 or even the 305. But I will work with what I have and that's a Celestron 114mm AZ Explorer StarSense Telescope my son bought me and my Android using Pro Cam to shoot stills and Video( when it works - get errors). Got all three free programs and yeah a BIG learning curve to use those programs. I can get great images but nothing with detail. Thanks again Jason for your vids. Always looking forward to the next one. Space is the limit! * and I am looking for a equatorial motorized tracking base for this telescope. $$$ :/
The sky-watcher az gti is a great mount if you have patience. And the 305, I recently gave it try having 2 days out camping with the express purpose of imaging with it out in a dark sky place...wasted a whole night trying to get good images. I had high hopes but after spending 12+ hours working with it I returned it. I used it on a 650mm newt and a 2050mm sct, didn't get good images on either.
Thank you for the video. We brought ours to the beach to capture ships out in the ocean but they are coming out very grainy. Taking out the barlow lense did help but we would love to see if you have a video on how to capture and use the stacking options. I know you mentioned another video so please let us know if you have one for a beginner like me.

Nice video Jason! First time you capture the moon and planets is very exiting. I tested also this camera a few nights ago on the moon with my Maksutov, also on Jupiter and Saturn, had to stay untill morning to capture them

Good video. I would research software called PIPP to crop and centre the planets. Then Autostakkert to stack the output from PIPP and finally Registax to sharpen the image and balance the colours.

Excellent Jason! Brilliant first images I thought! Don't worry about RAW that's more for DSO imaging, you just want to film the Moon with the AVI file setting. You did a grand job, this video was like bottling every ones first time just pressing stuff to see what it does lol Brilliant :D Oh and I hear you regarding the glasses, I've recently reached the two glasses stage myself and everything you do feels like you've got the wrong pair on! :D Nice one Jason :)

I see, so RAW is just for DSO's that makes sense, as in photo not video....Yeah, that was my strategy, press buttons and see what happens lol. I use PIPP for crop and center image, then using Autostakkert3 for stacking and finally I prefer Astra Image software for wavelets and other stuff. They doing it much better than Registax 😀👌
Recommended to try this one instead of Registax 😉

Thanks for this review. I'm thinking of changing a camera that I bought on Aliexpress that goes with the name "Angeleyes" and though I managed to get good photos, they're not the best and I have problems to focus planets on it.

Hello Timz. Simple answer. No. You have to use it like a eyepiece so you just place the camera in the focuser of the telescope. To increase mag you can use a barlow lens. Hope this helps :)

Thank you Benny. The mount I use is a EQ2 it's very basic but has a small motor on it so I can track objects a little easier.

Hello Francois. Neither. It's a Skywatcher 130M with a 900 FL. The small 70mm Refractor piggybacking is a custom, built up from various damaged telescopes to make one good one.

Hey Epic. They just sent me a email and ask me if I wanted to test it out. I think they just search TH-cam and facebook for astro channels and groups then send them out it your interested. so in other words they pick you.

Set gain to 0. Set exposure settings. Set capture time period (30 seconds etc). Start capture For planets, there'll probably be a section where you can change the resolution of the camera (referred to typically as "ROI" (Region of Interest) - which reduces the resolution area, and should increase frame rate. All of this is referred to as "lucky imaging". It's pretty much how modern planetary and lunar imaging is done (and solar).
Capture video (in this case, using sharpcap cos the SV105 apparently doesn't have ascom drivers and won't work with firecapture). Once you finally have your video, you can use software to pick the best frames, and stack those frames. Most people use Autostakkert! 3, which is very easy to use. Once you have your stacked image, you can then proceed to sharpen it. most people use registax 6 wavelets for sharpening although it's a clunky and buggy experience imho. an alternative to registax is astrosurface, which appears more stable and can do wavelet sharpening like registax.

I'll add that this camera, whilst cheap, has 3 major issues:
1. it's only 8 bit
2. it's USB2 only
3. no ascom driver (limits which software it can be used for capturing with).
I have a sharpcap pro licence but I much prefer to use firecapture for capturing data.
The pros of course are that it's so cheap and it offers pretty reasonable results for those dipping their toes into planetary/lunar/solar imaging.

@@smalloptics753 You're welcome. Always look at the specs [of the camera] The SV105 has pixel sizes of 3um and only 1.4mp. The SV205 has 8mp and pixel size of 1.4um. In theory, the SV205 has more resolution available to it, given the larger amount of mp and smaller pixels. The SV205 is also USB3, so in theory, should have a higher fps (fps is important in planetary imaging). More frames, the better the chance of capturing good frames that can be used for stacking. Neither camera offers ASCOM drivers it appears, which is really BAD imho. It limits what software you can use. I have also noticed that the svbony cameras seem to have limited fps for the same chipset/sensor when compared to ZWO cameras (compare the specs on the SV305 vs the ZWO 290mc). For example, with the SV305, max fps is 130 @ 12 bit ADC. Bit rate is effectively 2^12 ranges of colour (4096 steps). For planetary, bit rate isn't super important, most images shoot at 8 bit believe or not, to give maximum frame rate attainable. SVBONY specs are really dodgy, not telling you much in the way of information. The ZW) 290mc can do nearly 800fps @ 8 bit and ROI (region of interest, think of it like a crop) 320*240 pixel cropped area.
You pays for what you get. Frame rate is critical with lucky imaging. For example, if you're getting 800fps, and 5% of those captured frames are really good and can be stacked to make a great image, that's 40 frames. if you're only getting 200fps and 5%, that's 8 frames. Stacking helps reduce sensor noise btw (and spec that's well worth investigating), so the more frames you stack, the better noise from the sensor will be suppressed. Less noise, less smearing of finer details in the image.

@@smalloptics753 I'm pretty sure the 205 is non ascom too. I think only the SV305 is ascom compliant. Even then, the camera is hobbled - much lower frame rates than other cameras using the same sony 290 sensor. I'd rather save a bit more and get a ZWO 224 mc in some respects, but I will admit that a cheapie SV105 still appeals somewhat, even if it is a very limited product.
