    14 for 14 and loving every minute of it Jason. I received my PPL in 2006. Shortly thereafter marriage, child, divorce... no cash flow to fly. I do miss it. I live vicariously through TH-cam pilot channels. I hope soon to get current again and get back up in the air.... adding more hours to my low-time log book. These videos really help the motivation. Thanks for all that you do!!

    Good video Jason. I am a retired air traffic controller supervisor and now instruct new controllers transferring in from other facilities. I appreciate your honesty about being frustrated in your earlier years. I admire your determination to keep striving for excellence and as you say, "a good pilot is always learning". My flight instructor told me the same thing. This also applies to air traffic controllers! Your instruction about ATC is very accurate. Keep up the good work!

    My favorite clearance was received many years ago. Origin: Anchorage, Alaska. Destination: Kotzebue, Alaska. Aircraft type: B737. Clearance: "Cleared to cruise to Kotzebue, departure frequency ___, squawk ____."

    This came perfectly on time, next week I will start my private pilot training, and I will definetly prepare CRAFT on my notebooks to have it on clearances. Thanks Jason!

    This is huge for me, being able to respond after hearing or writing down as I'm learning to fly out of a class C airport. Wish I could watch the livestream but will be picking up someone from the airport actually. Hope it is recorded, I could use all the tips/help I can get for radio communication.

    • @MzeroAFlightTraining
      @MzeroAFlightTraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for tuning in! I always try to anticipate what ATC will say to me so I don't have to spend too much effort formulating a response. And in a pinch, you can always just remember to say "who you are, where you are, and what you want". Hope this helps a bit!

    Always look out for departure procedures at airports with towers because sometimes they give them to you standard even when you don't request them. Allegheny County Airport in Pittsburgh is like that: they'd assign the Allegheny Five (presently the Allegheny Nine) as a matter of course, and it's pretty simple but it gives you the altitude and frequency embedded so it's a quick way to launch aircraft. My first IFR long-distance x-country was from Baltimore to there and back, and it surprised me when that clearance came back; fortunately my instructor at the time was a furloughed airline pilot and was able to respond and then explain. He had been teaching and coaching me DPs and STARs, so that was a great teachable moment.
    Regarding the "five minutes after departure," I just got one of those leaving out of Charlottesville, Virginia three nights ago. I think the controllers are just being precise since I was the only one leaving and the airspace was pretty dead until I got near Dulles and in Maryland. So don't assume it will be 10 even though that's what you normally hear.

    At the moment I would have to give "speak slower" directive to the controller with your call at 5:38 but I'm not used to IFR clearances.

    14 for 14!
    My first instructor gave me a script. The clearances are almost always the same. Realized as VFR the clearance to leave the airport is very similar to an IFR clearance. "Skyhawk 7899N Cleared to where ever Fly Rwy Hdg VFR @/blw 8500 Dept 120.6 Sqk 4321". I write it down on my kneeboard before I am even in the plane. I leave blanks for the dept freq and the squawk code. Once airborne ATC will give a vector heading followed shortly by hand over to Dept who tells me usually "own altitude and navigation".
    We have both ground and clearance so usually can't say ready to taxi after the readback. Have to switch frequency to Ground to request taxi instructions. Which are usually the same just depending on which runway you are given - Runway, taxiway exit, taxiway. Landing clearances are the same thing, a script. Sometimes, there is amplifying information given but the important things are always in the same order.
    Very easy to talk to ATC when you are pretty sure you know what they are going to say.

    G, day MzeroA.com from Sydney, Australia.
    That was good practice: that said, still a little fast and unfamiliar with localities.
    I like the CRAFT acronym and have practised different formats.
    * just recording the instructions across a lined page, I find works. You can look back and see the last communication and check with the gauge or LCD/radio.
    * You then have a step by step story from RWY to RWY correction (taxiway/ramp).

    Technically you are correct with omitting the altitude when the route contains a SID. However, some towers have in their procedure to say, "Fly the Published SID" for the altitude portion. Especially when you have lots of training pilots in a towered airspace.

    Only problem with listing your clearance is that you might be given a clearance limit. Flying out of Provo they are only allowed to clear you to FFU VOR. Then on the way up you contact Salt Lake.

  • @kevindavis8175
    @kevindavis8175 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, when you’re cleared to an airport, ATC will say “N23MZ cleared to (airport name) AIRPORT.” For those who are beginners here, they do this because the airport name can also be a VOR (in this case, Ocala). Just adding my two cents.

  • @kevindavis8175
    @kevindavis8175 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could also put “1” in the frequency part. A GA plane obviously won’t be assigned a UHF departure frequency.

    All ATC personnel should speak as clearly as you, with the same speed or slower. It's always odd to me how annunciating and speaking clearly on the radio is not even an after thought in aviation.

    • @1dgram
      @1dgram 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They already do, but the plane has to be signed up for it (which precludes most flying clubs) and the pilot needs to have the capability of receiving it (ForeFlight with a Performance Plus or Business Performance subscription will do). And it's currently only available at less than 100 airports (mostly large airports with lots of airline traffic).

    Why aren’t ATC personnel trained to pronounce words clearly? So many of them speak so fast and slur their words so badly that it’s easy to see why pilots could misunderstand them. It seems to me that safety being number one, pilots and ATC should speak clearly.
