I love travelling, but I've always been scared by the idea of doing it alone. But this video has made me start to think differently.
"Travel alone because otherwise you would not go at all" - I love that.

Honestly, Leena. Mostly, when people do VEDA, or Vlogmas, or any other temporary daily-videos thing on their channel, I'm like sort of bummed because I eventually feel like I get too much of them, or I get bored of their content. But this series you're doing right now, I swear, I finish a video hardly being able to wait for the next one. I am loving it. Thank you.
And yes, there's a magic to traveling alone that I can't put into words, but thankfully you had pretty good ones.

I spent last summer travelling around Italy and Switzerland solo. It was the best thing I've done hands down. I pride myself in thinking that I know my own mind and know myself well already, but that trip taught me so much about myself, not all positives, but nethertheless I learnt. My friends and family always ask me why I chose to travel alone, and the answer is usually because no one wants to come with me or they dont have the time or money or any other excuse, and I'm not going to sit around waiting for them, because ill never go at all. We have one life, its up to us to make the most of it :)

On monday I'm going to Paris, solo, for a week, and I'm only 17. I'm autistic and it will be the first time I've gone anywhere far alone. Only a few months ago I needed someone to come with me onto buses, I was so afraid. But I want to live now. I want to explore, and be free. Wish me luck!

YES YES YES YES. People look at me weird often when I tell them about travelling alone, but it's one of my favorite things to do. It gives me inner peace and the solitude in new places around strangers is just such a nice feeling. It makes me feel so content to walk through a new city by myself

When you were there, if you were sitting somewhere beautiful, what did you do, did you read or watch something on your phone orjust be in your own thoughts, I'm sorry if this sounds rude at all because I'd love to go solo travelling but I'm scared of being like alone with myself if that makes sense, I'd need distracting from my own thoughts but I wouldn't want to waste my experience by sitting just watching something on my phone , or is that wasting the experience if you are happy, I'm guess I'm just worried about not really being with it if I were there and what I would do like within my head what I would think and if I'd get board, I guess ess what I'm asking is what you did when you were alone and at somewhere or exploring somewhere

    • @bethanysbooks
      @bethanysbooks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hannah C Hi Hannah! It's not rude at all :) I would say that facing up to those thoughts and feelings that I would usually try to avoid was a big part of travelling for me. It's a lot easier to work through and understand them with space away from other people and your usual surroundings. However if you don't think you want to do the same, or if you need to ease into that slowly, that's cool too! I would usually spend a moment looking around, take some photos on my camera, write down what I can see/hear/smell and what I'm thinking/feeling, and then read a book or watch some TH-cam. That way you get to digest everything but also not get bored :) plus reading etc is spending valuable time with yourself too! And a big thing I learnt was not to criticise myself for not appreciating things or not doing enough, because I had to listen to myself and what I needed from moment to moment. Hope that helps! :) xxx

I traveled to Sweden by myself for two weeks this summer! Had a lovely time reconnecting with distant relatives, volunteering on a farm near Stockholm, meeting wonderful people from all over the world, swimming in the archipelago and getting inspired to start writing again after far too long. This video provided me with the extra push of motivation I needed to make it happen, as I'm sure it has done for lots of other people in my position, and now I can't wait to go on more solo adventures! Keep doing what you do Leena ^_^

one of the best things i've done in my life was to travel alone to northern norway, where i got to see humpback whales and orcas feed on the herring for hours and hours. when i came back friends and family of course wanted to hear everything about my trip. i showed them pictures, shared a few stories, but the rest of it i just kept to myself. it belonged only to me.
    this was beautiful!

This came at the perfect time, I'm 18 and going to travel alone around Europe later this year. This sensitive and beautiful little film captured all the reasons why I'm doing it, in ways that I can't explain when people ask me what I'm doing it for. Thank you Leena :)

This was really soothing. Sometimes paranoia/caution gets the best of us women and we feel like we don't have permission to do things (like traveling alone). Here's to looking forward to traveling alone.

This is so relevant to me right now ! I just came back yesterday from a 2 month trip in New Zealand and Australia with a group, and as an introvert it was so hard to be around people all the time. My parents wouldn't let me travel alone so they made me go to this organised program. I had fun most of the time, but it wasn't what I needed. I always knew I needed to be alone. I hope it proved them that I can do this on my own.

"Travel alone because otherwise you would not go at all." GAH, I love this, you're an inspiration. I'm living abroad at the moment, and holding this in my mind--not to let lack of a traveling companion stop me from seeing all the places I want to go. Looking at possibly visiting Switzerland alone next month, and some other places at the end of June.

I've done a lot of travelling, through Europe & the USA, starting when I was 18, and all of it has been by myself. I love having the freedom to do exactly what I want each day. To be a bit selfish and decide where to go and what to see and eat and spend money on based 100% on my thoughts, feelings and budget.

I've always had this little dream that one day I will go to The Royal Greenhouses of Laeken in Brussels. They're only open to the public for 3 weeks a year during Spring time. My passport expired years ago and it has been my new years resolution to renew it since about 2011 but I only just did it this year. Now I have no excuses not to go to places, maybe this little dream and others will come true :) Also that big, still lake looks so beautiful.

I began my first solo trip in January. I flew out to Indonesia with no plan, it was pretty terrifying tbh, but i made loads of friends and met awesome women from all around the world travelling solo. I did about two months on my own, but i made so many friends whilst also spending time alone. I have definitely become a better decision maker, dealing with problems and have also learned to really enjoy my time alone. I think what scared me most at the beginning was the prospect of being totally alone, but i've now become more comfortable in that. I'm still travelling but am on the stretch of my trip where i'm meeting some friends. I had a discussion with one of them recently about the dangers of solo travel. We talked about how with reference to women we talk about dangers of sexual assault which ofc are very real. However we both agreed that women are socialised to make more sensible decisions when travelling, which can contribute greatly to their safety. I watched a man almost lose his life at a waterfall and many of my male traveller friends have been in road accidents. Reckless decision making contributed to these situations unfortunately. I don't think we should avoid the conversation about dangerofc but it should be far more nuanced because there is so much to gain, especially as a woman from solo travel.

Can you give my mom a call Leena?
Im 22 and she looks at me like I'm crazy when I say I want to travel alone. (Mostly because I don't have anyone to travel with, but secondly because I wouldn't mind it!) Now when of the places I want to go is New York, so I sort of get why she would be worried, but still!!!

Do you want to chat about it? I have anxiety but manage to travel alone, and I think i might be able to give you some advice/encouragement. I think you can definitely do it!

I desperately want to go to Italy alone or with friends. Not fussy. Don't really mind where first, as long as I can then grab trains right round the country.
