Thanks Joey for this video. It's a crying shame that you had to go through all that and your spirit and soul were temporarily damaged. You made the right move to leave a place like that but when one door closes another opens. Your honesty is refreshing! It's getting harder and harder to find honest people.
Hello Joey, in the automotive service, there are a lot of dishonest shops in Vegas. It took me a long time to find the shop I now have and trust. Yes, I may pay more, but I never have an issue with my car after they fix it. It is so sad that these mechanics/techs destroy our vehicles, and we have to pay these outrageous prices. And this dishonesty doesn't stop at mechanic shops. You will see it in the healthcare industry as well. Thank you for sharing.. your a good person. Stay bless
. . . It isn't just Vegas, believe me, the problem of downright stealing from the costumers, and that's exactly what it is, happens all over our Country...My advice to everyone is you must know a mechanic on a personal level, OR ! Your screwed... People who work in management positions in the automotive industry are despicable thieves...
Hello - Like I said' Not all shops are crooked and things do happen but - After 7 years of tat going on.. I just decided to do something else - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
I know you are speaking more truth than you realize. So many techs that have no idea what they are doing and so many shops that as you said are not in business to take care of people, there only to squeeze every dollar possible out of each customer
Joey in one video you have described the majority of repair shops in the whole world. Ihope that consumers can find an honest mechanic ,and there are some out there but they are usually independant . First rule of car repair ,never go to the dealer . second rule ,never go to a national chain .
I am 70, and still wrenching on family stuff only. I started mechanics around 15 years of age, took many courses and worked at a couple of shops. I did not like the shop working conditions, and went on to enjoy many other opportunities. However, I have owned 200 personal vehicles, some I bought to flip. In 55 YEARS, I have taken vehicles to shops because I was either too busy, or too lazy to do the repairs. In 3 instances I was ripped off, and probably 20 instances, I had to FIX the fix ! For 1 year I was back-shop sales for Sears, and for one year I was a Pontiac Buick salesman. I just have seen too much incompetence, legal rip-offs and sleeze. ENUF said.
I understand exactly what you're saying here, Joey! In my younger days, I went from working in a family auto-repair business to a well-known nationwide muffler shop where all they did was mufflers, shocks and brakes. At that time, I was used to doing all varieties of work so the three basic duties were boring to me in a short while. Once .. we pushed an out-of-town customer's car out every morning and pushed it back in every night because it didn't start. I saw that there was a bad connection on the starter and told the service manager I could fix it in a few minutes. Nope, it was in there for a muffler and nothing else, so, we continued to push it every day regardless. I was soon shown all sorts of shady ways to convince the customer to purchase unneeded exhaust/brake repairs .. items that would basically just add to the mechanic's commission and it didn't take me long to leave in disgust and discouragement and seek another more-honest form of employment. My dreams of being a professional mechanic were destroyed there, but, I did learn how crooked many repair shops truly are. Not all but many .. Good for you, Joey, moving on is the best for a person's health and conscience!
I totally agree man, I graduated from school just like you, I wanted to repair vehicles and help people, it is very satisfying to see happy faces when you solve their problems with honesty and empathy, unfortunately honesty and empathy don't pay the big bucks to the busines owner in these cases, It's very sad tha this industry is all about money...
I see it from the Shop finaces point of view - I see it from the techs point of view and as a whole' for me.. I still love cars but not the business of repairing them anymore - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey

I went to that company once. A man came in screaming "I'm mad as hell" . He said his dad taught him to mark the part he was going to have worked on. He went in for a starter which they charged him for, and he still had his old "marked" starter they didn't replace. Sure fits your portrait of that company. God bless you. I've been working a tech line for the last 7 years helping other techs fix cars and it's nice to be insulated from the dirty part of business.
Same story with me Joey. I was a 20 year veteran in the Outdoor Power Equipment Technician industry, twice certified as a Master Service Technician, and I ran my own company for years before starting a job at one of the dealers. I did all sorts of work, but in one instance, I was doing valve adjuments on Stihl BR600 blowers, and just cranking them out. The service manager came to me and asked "Why were you only clocked into those jobs for 10 minutes?" I replied "Because it only took me 10 minutes, why do you think?". Then he asked "Well how am I supposed to charge the customer for an hour of labor when you only clocked in for 10 minutes?". My answer was simple "YOU DON'T!". He got upset and stuck me on tires as punishment. I spent a year and a half there and couldn't take it anymore, the way they treated customers AND employees was appalling. Now I know why it so long to fix vehicles. But auto mechanics do not have REAL Honest people working in this business. I have seen mechanics do some strange things to people's vehicles. I had an older car & I always to drive down the street & go thru my engine to rehook hoses up to their proper places in the engine. Check to see if the fuel filter was hooked up correctly & so on. Even for a simple oil change. Crooked as Hell. New employees think they know more the owner. They think they can do it better. I have this same problem. Never ends. You did the right thing Joey!!
Awesome Joey!...I worked as a manager of a grocery store for 20 years. Our company policy was simple... 1. Do the Right Thing 2. Do the Decent Thing. 3. Let management know what you did......Pretty Simple...Joey, You did The Right Thing & you did The Decent Thing. When supervisors demand that you do the Unthinkable...That tells you everything you need to know about that person. Good job!
When I used to be a service writer I would break down each repair as 1. Suggested 2. Preventive Maintenance or 3. Required. You should be knowledgable enough to be able to break it down for the customer. You also need to trust your mechanics are being honest as well.
Sure.. I did the 1-2-3 steps as you pointed out. And when the customers refused the NON-ESSENTIAL services... the behavior of some of my techs were "Get this leaky POS out of my bay" - I can debate this all day - It is what it is and wasnt for me. 7 years and i moved on to a different field - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
@@VegasDtech I moved on from the business as well although I enjoyed my time as a service writer. I was fortunate to work around mechanics that were good, fast and honest generally. They also were not upset at me when I wanted to visually see something they said was broken, which was rare. Glad you are happier now! Great channel!
I have been through this type of problem myself. What I want to hear is advice on dealing with this type of situation, from both the employee's perspective and from the customer's perspective. I watch your channel to stay informed, not to get upset.

I tried working for a shop i lasted 12 days. i was suppost to change oil and grease semi trucks. ill be honest i got fired for it when id write other items that i seen that needed to be addressed cab mounts hood mounts pin bushing etc. this show was and is todate a huge corpartion. anyways they told that i wasnt suppost to be looking at that stuff and that if there was any other issue they would have other techs there start new tickets and new work orders on the other issues and my job was just to change oil and grease the trucks then day 12 the main guy called me into his office and said your reviews/and documentations look excellent like your very experienced but we only hired you for oil and grease. and i cant put all this other stuff on these work orders without starting a new one. so were going to have to let you go. so i loaded up my tool box and left. now 6 months later that guy and several others got handed there walking papers and the place is the same name but has new management so id thinks its better but im not sure. Now i work on my own stuff and work with a small buisness on there trucks mostly ram trucks with the cummins engines. and i like it alot better.
Hey Joey I always enjoyed your videos. Back in February 2023 you did some videos of the 3 kids mine. Recently in the news I see they are going to clear that area , clean up the contaminants and build houses on it. I was wondering if you can revisit the area, I know you won't be allowed in there but could you use your drone and make a bunch of videos on the clearing & rebuilding of the area? Thanks from Minnesota.
Hey Joey, it was a hard journey for you. You made a right decision. You know and I know, they're more good folks out there like you, than dishonest peoples!
It is amazing how unscrupulous business owners can be when it comes to their customers. I got hired by heat and air company as a field advisor and the first day of training was all about how to screw the customer, at first break I went out to smoke a cigarette got in my truck and never went back! I don't know how these people sleep at night!
Man - That is just crazy! Now if you come out and make a video saying this stuff - WE will get massive push back from the indusrty saying - We dont know how the business works - incredible - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
This is the exact reasons why I do my own work. If I have to buy tools for the job I will without a second thought. A lot of shops are run by schisters that put making money first.
Why do most mechanics insist that they do all thier own repairs??? Because they know how the business is.. - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
i worked on them, wrote service, was the manager. i think you dont understand that the tech will sell the advisor preventive maintenance per milage because their livelihood is revolved around a thing called FLAT RATE. They get paid off the time the job calls for. Its the advisors job to DECEIVER the recommwned service repairs and prioritize the list for the customer. you also cant steal work off out of the parkong lot because you were simping. a shop only gets so many people going to them and its expensive to run one. cars are very complex and usually need more than people think. things happen when working on them, you should have been a tech for longer to understand how it really works. nobody is "scamming anyone". its a rough industry and alot can go wrong. there are bad apple in every industry, look at healthcare! if you felt a way about a techs recommendations then go out there and look at the car yourself and make a priority lost for the customer. you dont have to tell the customer they need it all. the tech sells the advisor and the advisor sells the customer what they need. wow dude...
Appreciate your comment - Did it for 7 years and you are right "Its a tough business" - Not all shops are dishonest - This video is NOT AN ATTACK on you. - Its my experience - My story - Im in Communications now and enjoy this much more. I already knew Shop owners and Service writers would push back on videos like this - Many aspects and angles - You left me a very intelligent comment and i appreciate your view point - Joey
What shop are you working at so i can recommend people NOT to go there. I work on john deere planters and i can tell you for a fact how much of a scam this is. Ive even fought corporate operations over this and what your saying is degrading to honest workers. Reputation for honest work will always outshine dehonest grease monkeys who throw a wrench at a vehicle without knowing which way it turns and when something brakes your eyes glisten with $ dollar signs.
Good to roll along with you Joey. Integrity is crucial, & we have high respect for you, Sir. We enjoyed your Drought walk n talks. I wrench on our 1987 Jeep Wagoneer in-line 6, Peugot 5 speed, & a 1989 Chevrolet K3500 big block 454, both with GM's TBI. What are your thoughts on doing some GM TBI maintenance videos? Maybe some DIY videos on other vehicle maintenance/repairs? Clutch went out on the Jeep, then it lost reverse, sat in the yard for 13 years, & corroded the 4 relays under the hood, & a local parts store wants $20 each. I see boatloads of relays on-line for a fraction of the parts store, yet not sure how to cross reference those parts to my Jeep. The trucks HVAC box doors/actuators need replaced. Door locks/switches replaced. Will install Tahoe power mirrors with the 7 LED turn arrows in the mirror on the Silverado. Running a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 5.3L also, the electronics are going wonky, & I am weak on the diagnostic side of things. What are your thoughts regarding folks going back to classic vehicles because they can't afford the newer vehicles, which are throw away's? If you have the knowledge it could be a niche source of income for you? All 3 of our vehicles are rebuildable, & in various stages of being refurbished. Started boycotting "NEW" vehicles 26 years ago. I also have a 2006 Yamaha Stratoliner V-twin 1900. Just some TH-cam video suggestions for you. Have a good one, my friend.
I WAS A SERVICE ADVISER TOO: I had the same experiences, I always gifted my customers with honesty and top notch service and got 10's on all of my surveys I made a lot of money from the survey bonus. yeah the service manager you had to deal with don't understand how to get repeat customers.
I sent my girlfriend to get her oil changed, I know how they take advantage of women so I took a majic marker and put a x on the oil filter, when she came back, it was the same oil filter and she had been charged for oil and filter, I called the shop rasing hell, he said bring it back and they would do it over, I said ok and told him the alternator belt was slipping, while you have it there tighten the belt, when she came home there was radiator fluid running every where, they had forgot and left the pry bar to tighten the belt and it had caught and gotten slung through the radiator
That Sucks! There has got to be ethical car repair places where you can work? Or start your own business where you can enjoy the hard earned degree. People will always go to an honest and ethical business. It can be done! Oh and by the way thank you! Pep boys are now off my list of auto repair!
I myself do not like taking my car to a Mechanic. ONe wanted 600 just for putting brakes on the car. 125 for an airfilter..Talk about over charging .. Should have Opened a shop and called it Honest Joe. '' Where you can get the best out of what I do" No Bs and No Mess. Thanks Brother for sharing.. Peace
@@VegasDtech yeah for real... you do not think 600 for just brake pads on just the front brakes.. 20 mins a side and 85 Dollar pads. Now how much Effort is needed for the Air Filter to be changed.? .lol
As a customer it’s important to stand firm and decline repairs when it seems excessive. I’ve run into my share from dealerships to big shops. Then I’ll go toa small shop and in one recent case, the repair was 1300$ less, from $1700 to $400. As a woman, they think you don’t know. Not this time!
Reminds me of the scripture at Proverbs 10:9 "The one walking in integrity will walk in security, But the one making his ways crooked will be found out."
Well I get where your coming from after spending 34 years with GM Olds, Pontiac , Geo, Cad , Chev . I found you need a good service Director . A dealership or shop will only run as good as management. Your right about techs just wanting to throw parts at a problem and not fixing the original problem. It’s all about your RO average and CSI. The auto Industry isn’t what it used to be and i made the most $$$ in my life and on the flip side the least. If I was going to do it all over again I would stay away from auto Industry and look into some thing in the medical… Just my 2 cents
I have seen this all the time. The always want more Money so they look for stuff. Fortunately I have a friend that owns a shop but he isn't open on the weekends. I'll have to find Dealers or independent shops on Saturdays to get that emergency work done. I always go in prepared and that makes those shops, mostly Dealers, get real mad at me. I still have to pay a lot but, when your car is down and you need it then you get screwed.
This is why people are hesitant to bring a car into a shop they have never been to because of the UPSELL and looking for stuff to repair that isnt critical .. But i had enough of the arguing' mostly with the Shop managers- I just wanted to get out and run away! - Joey
Pep Boys sucks anyways. LOL. But they are all like that in one way or another. Always trying to up sell one way or another. I'm a poor person with a 2001 Taurus with 368,00 miles, but I know how to fix it myself. If a part goes out that is unfixable I just try get another car like it. Can find sometimes for 500 or less until the pandemic and everyone thinks they have a 2019 Ford taurus that is 2001. Thank you for the story.

Even for a simple oil change. Crooked as Hell. New employees think they know more the owner. They think they can do it better. I have this same problem. Never ends. You did the right thing Joey!!
Thats my experience after 7 years - quit mechanics a long lomg time ago - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
Good job!
When I used to be a service writer I would break down each repair as
7 years and i moved on to a different field -
Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
@@VegasDtech I moved on from the business as well although I enjoyed my time as a service writer. I was fortunate to work around mechanics that were good, fast and honest generally. They also were not upset at me when I wanted to visually see something they said was broken, which was rare. Glad you are happier now! Great channel!
I have been through this type of problem myself. What I want to hear is advice on dealing with this type of situation, from both the employee's perspective and from the customer's perspective. I watch your channel to stay informed, not to get upset.
Hey Walter - this is just my experience' Could be pleasant for others but I have too big of a heart -Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
What you are saying is true. I was a smog check tech in California. Places wanted people that could do more than just smogs, they wanted employees that could do everything including oil changes. I was ASE certified for 25 years with a medallion for the 25 years of being certified.
Hey Chris' yeah man... I dont want to crap on the business' perhapse I just was to caring and SOFT as a service writer.. needless to say - I gave it my 7.
Learned a lot and moved on to a different field - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
I tried working for a shop i lasted 12 days. i was suppost to change oil and grease semi trucks. ill be honest i got fired for it when id write other items that i seen that needed to be addressed cab mounts hood mounts pin bushing etc. this show was and is todate a huge corpartion. anyways they told that i wasnt suppost to be looking at that stuff and that if there was any other issue they would have other techs there start new tickets and new work orders on the other issues and my job was just to
change oil and grease the trucks then day 12 the main guy called me into his office and said your reviews/and documentations look excellent like your very experienced but we only hired you for oil and grease. and i cant put all this other stuff on these work orders without starting a new one. so were going to have to let you go. so i loaded up my tool box and left. now 6 months later that guy and several others got handed there walking papers and the place is the same name
but has new management so id thinks its better but im not sure.
Enjoy your videos
Hey Mike! - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
@ been watching since pandemic, always enjoyed water reports and walk and talks
Hey Joey, it was a hard journey for you. You made a right decision. You know and I know, they're more good folks out there like you, than dishonest peoples!
Very cool comment - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
i understand.....i had same problem ....different type of repair....
honesty has a high price sometimes, doing the right thing lets you sleep at night
Agreed -If you get stomach aches doing a job you dont enjoy -- Try something different - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
@@VegasDtech Your're welcome Joey, I enjoy your content!
I spent time as a mechanic, helper, and writer. I still work on my own, but decided it wasn’t a career path early on.
Yeah i learned a lot in those 7 years of how it works and how to navigate with repair shops now -
Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
This is the exact reasons why I do my own work. If I have to buy tools for the job I will without a second thought. A lot of shops are run by schisters that put making money first.
Why do most mechanics insist that they do all thier own repairs??? Because they know how the business is.. - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
Joey this has been going on for years at dealerships and repair shops. Very sad. ✌️🇺🇸
I don't blame you at all Joey, My husband said if we ever buy another car it will a VERY SIMPLISTIC Car
i worked on them, wrote service, was the manager. i think you dont understand that the tech will sell the advisor preventive maintenance per milage because their livelihood is revolved around a thing called FLAT RATE.
What the heck. Hearing this is a shame. At least you have your integrity man. Blessings to your family.

Wow I feel so bad for you your a great person
It was a long long time ago - Im in a different field now much more enjoyable! - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
Why didn’t you take it on the return trip?
@itsthehumidityyall8303 I had a farm at the time and was really busy

Joey, thank you for sharing...eye opening!!! Being a female and now older, it is an issue even though l watch them Iike a *'bug'!!!* ...IoI
Peace
$125 for an air filter???? Come on man - Are you being for real Dan?
@@VegasDtech yeah for real... you do not think 600 for just brake pads on just the front brakes.. 20 mins a side and 85 Dollar pads. Now how much Effort is needed for the Air Filter to be changed.? .lol
Your a good man Joey. Honesty is a dying quality
Yep. Profit above principle. The American way. What it is, what it was, what it will be.
"The love of money is the cause of all kinds of evil"

True dat!
- Joey
❤
This is what’s wrong with humanity today. ☹️ I was recently charged $973.00 for a wheel bearing 😳. They wanted another $700 for CV boots😳. I declined.
What do You Have In Mind To Work??
This is normal for auto service shops ,you can't trust anyone. Just like king 45.
Sounds like a stressful situation.
Start you're own shop
👏👏👍👍!
If people only have jobs if they lie to their customers they should shut down and go work for someone who knows how to run a business.
Good for you!
imagine how mad the customer gets when an intermittent problem can't be fixed.
Those are the WORST! - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
DEI mechanics working on 2ton vehicles 😮
Thier you go! - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
Hey Tim - yeah i drive cheap cars too but like you said once the pandemic hit - used car prices doubled.. $3000 cars owners want close to 5K firm! - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
5 or 7 huh? It’s such an insignificant amount of time that you’re not sure? How about 6? Let’s call it 6. Take 2!
it's all over the internet, why auto mechanics are quitting.
Its getting REALLY REALLY bad Vic' - Im not surprised that the industry is seeing this - Thanks for tuning into my walk and talk Vlog - Joey
