    Great video. Answers some questions that I had regarding appropriate tool holders for the Taig lathe. I am building a nrw tailstock for my lathe utilizing a Taig headstock and a er16 to 16 mm shaft. Theoretically it should be great, but I've been traveling and haven't done much on it. You have inspired me to replace my tool holder and it is now on my list. Thank you.

      Roy: Thanks for your comment, and best of luck with the tool holder. I really think Walter has the best approach and all the work can be done on the little Taig Lathe. Best Regards: Larry

    On the plunger type tool posts, there is no real need to have two dovetails. On the wedge type, it allows holders to be run with the wedge facing away from the work when holding a boring bar/trepanning tool that extends out the “off” (right side viewed from the tool side of the holder) side of the tool holder.

    Hi, Larry,
    I watched your video with interest you are doing a great job with the new toolpost it looks super duper and the new tailstock is looking great at the end of the bed, I finished the short lever tonight, you have given me the incentive to order some 1" x 1" hot rolled steel to make more holders when I have the shaper finished, thanks for the link address I think this video of yours is as good as any to give enough details for any builder intending to build the new toolpost

      Walter: It probably gives some direction, but your video has a few more details that are important. I will use my shaper to clean up a couple holders and see how it works out. Each one should only take a few minutes. Best Regards: Larry

    Hi Larry, very useful information. I am thinking of buying this lathe to do very small and precision work. Do you think this lathe is capable of doing it. I am in san jose, is there any dealer around there and can you tell about the tailstock on your machine because I havnt seen that kind on taig machines. Thanks

      Raj: The Taig is a nice little machine, much similar to the to the Sherline. Both are inexpensive to comparison to instrument type lathe. The Taig might be a bit more robust and less expensive, but it would depend on what your going to use it for. Sherline is more expensive and sells a lot more accessories. I've have Sherline products and they are well made, but I've never owned or used the lathe or mill. As far as the tailstock, it's something I built myself. You really need something that will reach across the wide Taig carriage. Again, it depends on what type of work your doing with the machine. Regards: Larry

    I use regular T-bolts with the Original toolposts, that works great, got a vid on my page that shows my setup, have some steel toolposts like the taig for bigger toolbits, there are two different kind of taig toolposts, the older ones are flat at the bottom and the newer ones are recessed on the botom around the bolt, with a 4 jaw it is easy to do that to the old toolposts, it gives a better grip. in the past I have looked at a2z but they were too expensive and way to bulky for my need, what Walter made was much smaler and would be great for me, but for me it takes too long to make and I doubt that it would come out like it should so I just keep using the Original style toolposts.

      Yes; The Taig tool posts are quite useful, and I occasionally use them in tight spots. In some ways, they make a lot of sense for such a small lathe. Thanks for your comments, and I'll definitely checkout your channel. Regards: Larry...…..WB6SIO

    Do you think a stock sherline tool post would work on the taig.

    • @larrypoindexter9351
      @larrypoindexter9351  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might. I think the Sherline and Taig tool posts are similar. I doubt it would work any better than the Taig, unless your interested in the rocker bottom below the tool slot. Regards: Larry

      @@larrypoindexter9351 Thank you you I was wondering about the boring bar holder they have. I may just make one and that can be my first project.

      @@madmarkthepyro5247 There are some nice square or flat sided boring bars that will fit the Taig tool post which are small in size. The Taig tool posts are very inexpensive and one could be easily modified so a small standard metric boring would fit nicely. I think I may have a video on one that I purchased. Just a thought. What is the diameter of the round tool post base?
    I am guessing one inch.

      Lewis: I will check this morning and send you a proper reply. Walter Maisey Link in the description above may have additional information. I'll also send my collection of photos; partly mine, Walters and others. Thanks for watching and best regards: Larry P.S.: check here later this morning and I'll give my exact dimension. I JUST CHECK: The Diameter is 1.125". I just made things using whatever was laying around shop, so I'm sure 1" would probably work fine. Good Luck: Larry P.S. No.2: I also added some PDF drawings to the file folder in this link.

      @@larrypoindexter9351 Thank you. I watched Walter's video and he used 1-1/4 inch. I just checked the cross slide and anything over 1 inch is going to hang off the side. I am trying to resurrect a Taig lathe from a 25 year old basket of parts. At this point I am trying to figure what I need (other than a large quantity of WD40) verses what I want. However I really like that tool post :-) I am thinking to forego the serrations and make the base/post a solid unit with a couple of lugs to line up with slot.

    • @larrypoindexter9351

      @@Bonjour-World One thing to keep in mind; It takes a bit of force to tighten the tool holder to the post. Even closing a 1" piece of mild steel. I think I probably mentioned that in the video. Another person built additional tool holders for a standard omni setup and made them a bit more hefty and then had trouble tightening them on the post. The same holds true for this miniature version. Mine works fine, as does Walters using 1"x1" material. Just keep that in mind. Larry

    Larry thank you for answering my questions about the tool posts BTW I like the looks of the 1 your working on now that would be allot easier to make as for I don't have a milling machine but know someone that does.

    • @larrypoindexter9351
      @larrypoindexter9351  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      John: There is very little milling work to do, and a milling attachment on the Taig lathe would do the trick. The serrations Could be eliminated if desired. I'm glad I was able to be somewhat helpful, and remember the original small lathe tool posts do work quite well. Thanks for your comment and Best Regards: Larry
