      @@edstark44 Hi mate. A number of reasons really..my hifi system has moved upstairs (don't know if you noticed my LXmini speakers which I revealed earlier this week). So only the movie system is downstairs now, so I really require a subwoofer which specialises in that application. Before a couple of months ago, I was using the system downstairs as an all-in-one kind of thing, hence why the XTZ worked, as it was a best of both worlds sort of subwoofer.
      Not only this, but the EU thing with XTZ means (according to another subscriber) that we in the UK don't get the 30 day trial period anymore..apparently XTZ told him that he'll lose his import fee. I would like another subwoofer, but this puts me off buying another one from them.
      So now that I only need a sub for movies I am considering the SVS PC-2000 Pro.
      I'm sure it will produce even more output than my previous BK Monolith Plus, and no doubt it will be far higher quality than the BK in terms of its bass performance.
      We'll have to see I guess!

      @@geezerintotech Fair enough, yep, that SVS will have loads more output down low. About 7db @20hz to be exact. PB-2000 Pro will be similar to PC2000 Pro:
      www.audioholics.com/subwoofer-reviews/svs-pb-2000-pro-1/conclusion
      The XTZ will have a slight edge(+2db or so) from 40hz upwards.

      Would you still recommend this subwoofer to people?
      I'm considering getting dual xtz 12.17 edge sub.
      I don't live in the UK, so I don't have to deal with import charges.
      The price would be 650€ each(including VAT)+ shipping (which is 60€)
      Sadly few alternatives around, svs pb 1000 pro's are 900€ each, with the 2000's going for 1300€ each.
      I fear getting a monolith plus will result in import charges.
      XTZ seems like the best choice for anyone in the European union unless you want bigger than 12" subs
      Arendal was another consideration, but their cheapest model is already a whooping 900€/each

    I just made the same move and got a XTZ 12.17 edge (second hand) upgrading from a BK Mono + I haven't had much time to set it all up yet but can tell instantly that I have the right decision (your review really helped, so thank you)

      Thanks for the great feedback - much appreciated!
      Yeah I think alot of people are starting to make the move because quite frankly the Monolith models are a bit out of date now in my opinion. I've noticed BK have kept these save models for over a decade now, and the line needs an update .. something to bring these models into 2021 I think!
      So far I am having fun with the XTZ - it really is the new king of subwoofers under £1000 in my honest opinion.
      Good luck with your new sub - let me know how you are getting on with it!

    Very nice review, thank you! I have hard decision between 10.17 edge and 12.17 edge, do you think I would loose much in medium size room if I choose 10.17 edge? Only thing for me is that 10.17 would be perfect for its size (or the height would be perfect) for my living room.
    The use would be pretty much 50-50 music and movies. At first I thought svs sb-2000 would be the perfect choice, but after finding xtz and as I am living in Finland I think now the xtz would be better choice. You think the same?

    • @geezerintotech
      @geezerintotech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello mate thanks for the feedback!
      Tough choice..I was decide between both of these too..only for aesthetic reasons really though as the 10 incher fits into a room more discreetly.
      I think it all depends on what you value..you say 50/50 movies/music..but how critical are you of a speaker's performance. If you are the type of person that notices the little things [like me unfortunately 😔], then perhaps I'd go for the 12 incher. That extra 2 inches makes a big difference to the bass depth. You will hear it. However, I think if you go for 2x 10 inch subwoofers in your room, you will be fine. If you're going for 1, then I'd go for the 12. I also think the resale value of the 12 inch sub will be better - most people are probably looking for that option.
      However, I think you will be happy with both options because the driver quality and amplifier is no doubt better than anything else in that price range!
      Yeah my pick would be with the XTZ over the SVS - SVS isn't great value in Europe for a start, and the SB-2000 is only a sealed option. XTZ gives you the flexibility..you could leave the ports unplugged for movies, you could use the port plugs for music. It's more versatile and cheaper!
      Let me know how you get on mate!

    • @Juke93
      @Juke93 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@geezerintotech thank you for the fast reply!
      Yes I am the guy who focuses on the little things. Good that you mentioned the depth. Do you think there would be big difference even when listening music? Or would the 2 inch difference become noticeable only when watching movies?
      And yes I have been thinking of going dual, since everyone says, that is the way to go. But that is at some point in the future.

    • @geezerintotech
      @geezerintotech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Juke93 No worries..happy to respond always!
      I think the difference will definitely be more substantial for movies as movies have their own subwoofer channel where you'll find plenty of bass effects.
      Music on the other hand probably won't benefit as much from the 12 inch over the 10 inch sub, however, the benefits will still be there. Although, some people do prefer going for smaller subwoofers like 8 inch and 10 inch as they think they sound 'speedier'. That is true to a degree, but it really depends on the woofer components and amplification used. I think the 12 incher is more than suitable for music and definitely speedy enough. The main think I'd say is get the crossover right and match the phase as perfectly as you can to your main 2 speakers. The XTZ has variable phase so you can get the best precision for matching which is great.
      Personally, I'd start with the 12 incher (because I think it's only another 100 euro too?) and then go for dual 12 inch subs when you are ready for the upgrade. You'll notice the difference for sure!

      @geezerintotech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. If it's a mixture of stuff you'll be doing, then I'd say you can't go wrong with either.
      I'd be leaning more towards the XTZ option though.
      On another note, what I would personally do is go for the option that allows me to buy 2 subwoofers as you'll get a much better sound that buying just 1.
      For example, I'd rather two 350 euro subwoofers compared to one XTZ at 735 euros.
      One option is the SVS SB1000. It's quite affordable - I'd rather buy two of those

    Love your honesty keep up the good work, looking for the best subwoofer for around £500. So a xtz 12.17 edge or a bk electronics p12 300sb pr based on your channel is what I'm thinking. I'm a home cinema 90% and music 10%, VALUE is the main goal so would love to know what you think????

    • @geezerintotech
      @geezerintotech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Leon thanks for the nice feedback and it would be a pleasure to help you.
      Another consideration I think that's important is the size of the cabinet.
      If you want something at the £500 price point, then I think XTZ 12.17 edge, the BK Monolith Plus or the BK Platinum 12 inch Passive Radiator are your best options.
      I think the BK Platinum 12 inch PR version is going to be the best all-rounder - it should offer you more bass extension than the XTZ (more ideal for LFE effects in movies), yet at the same time you shouldn't get any port chuff that you can get on bass reflex subwoofers.
      The other good thing about the BK Platinum is the size of the enclosure will be small than all of the other subs mentioned above - but the sub-bass should still exceed that of the XTZ.
      However, if you do place a particular important on music, then perhaps the XTZ 12.17 edge might 'edge' ahead in this area. From my listening experience it seems to offer a punchier bass and more mid-bass slam than pretty much anything in the price range (or even double for that matter).
      Hope this helps

  • @andreemilsen369
    @andreemilsen369 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi.
    I have a B&W DB1, and are considering selling it, and getting two of these. Reason is, in my room, the DB1 has to work rather hard to give me the punch i need, but then it is a bit much in the deepend. Feels like my walls are flexing and the projector is actually shaking. Rather anoying when watching movies 🤪 Do you think two cheaper subs, would solve this issue? The BD1 retails for 5 grand in Norway now, for comparison. 😊

    • @geezerintotech
      @geezerintotech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello mate. How big is the room? Did you do a sub crawl and put the subs in the best spots? The DB1d is a sub I wanted a while back, but the driver is a bit too small for the job because of its sealed enclosure..even though you have 2x12 inch drivers, it's still not enough if you can only buy 1 unit. The price is also just too much I think..wayy too much!
      I'd recommend 2 cheaper ported subs myself..you'll get way better room integration and your sub won't be fighting your system so much. If you get a ported model, it'll be alot cheaper and you'll get much more dB. But you have to weigh up what you want. I can say that the XTZ has a decent blend between the typical sealed and ported sounds. It's kind of a mix of both.
      Another option is to get 2x14 inch sealed subs from Arendal (if you want sealed). You're from Norway so I'm sure you must have heard of them!
      They have the 1723 2S series..dual opposing 13.8 inch drivers and I think the price is 1999 euros. You could get two of those and still save money over that one B&W. Unbelievable lol. And they even look prettier aswell I think!
      In any case, you'll definitely get more quality bass output with 2x XTZ subs than your db1... Definitely... Just make sure you put them in the right spots, as it makes the biggest difference, even though sometimes it is not the most convenient thing to do!

    • @andreemilsen369
      @andreemilsen369 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@geezerintotech
      Hey 😊
      The room is about 5× 8 meters, not sure. Did the crawl, and found two spots. Tried the one with most bass first, behind the couch to the left, but did not get good integration. So went with secound best, frontleft wall, close to, but not in corner. I also have dual 12" in fronts, dual 10" in rear, play them all in large, way better kick. Fronts have xtz 300 edge biamped= 600 watts 1500 dampingfactor, each 🤪
      The Arendals, are too expencive now, so is the DB1 (was single, and no kids when I boght it🤪 now I have 5 kids, 3 cats, 1 dog, 1 micropig, and most expencive, a girlfriend 🤣).
      My room is treated with eggcartoons, 170 of them, stacked in layers of 4, with some air inbetween. This is the singel best treatmeny I have. Made the bass stay in the room, had to turn down sub 12 db😮, and almost no leakage into one of my sons bedroom witch is next room. I also have thick, heavy curtains on all walls, and this tames the mid and high reflections perfectly...absolutely no effect on bass though 🤪
      Thing is, I want two subs so that intergration is better and I do not need the DB1's ability to play to 200hz. I stop between 80 and 120, and have dual bass (front and sub).
      I have to find two subs, for the price I get from DB1, or my girlfriend will be pissed...just bought 2 xtz 300 Edge amps 🤪

    • @geezerintotech
      @geezerintotech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andreemilsen369 ah I see. Those XTZ Edge amps are awesome with the icepower modules. Some find them (and the hypex variant) a bit shrill and lean, but I think what's happening is the speakers are being exposed and some listeners aren't keen on that.
      Lol how many fried eggs did you have to go through to make your room then hehehe. That's a lot of cholesterol right there
      Yeah forget the 200hz figure. Why do they even bother writing that. For me, with music it has to be 60hz or less. With movies I stick it on 80hz and forget it according to THX spec.
      For that price point you have alot of options mate. Definitely 2 subs rather than 1. Any day of the week I'd do that option but that's just me!

      Lol
      I bought them new from a farming store 🤪
      The difference in sound before and after the eggcartons is really silly🤪
      I was thinking of buying "real" acustics, but that will never happen. 170 cartons, cost me about 35 bucks, and if I buy, well, 6 more packs, I can cover most of the room in a layer of for cartons staked. Try that with reall acustics/ basstraps, and the price will be a bit different 🤪
      Putting the DB1 up for sale today, to see what options I get. The sub is great, and I could get two of it, that would be preferable, the price though 🤦‍♂️
      I have read, heard, that two subs is almost always better, even two cheaper over one expencive, so I'll give it a shot.
      Thw 300 Edge is far from thin sounding to me, and I am a bassfreak 🤪
      My Dynavoice Dynamite play well down to 22hz, and if I was close to normal, I would have no need for a sub. The rears, Dynamite 10, goes to 25 hz. The sound is great without a sub, maybe even a bit tighter and cleaner for music, but clean, is not my cup of tea 🤪
      Btw: the cholesterol in eggs, is no longer considered to ve dangerous. It is actually good, especially for men Testosterone is dirrctly derived from colesterol, so we need some. The colesterol that is dangerous, is mostly produced in our own body from too much suggar, transfat and too high cortisol (stresshormone) levels.

      @@andreemilsen369 Sorry, when I meant 'thin' I didn't mean thin in the bass. In the bass it will be massive due to the high damping factor. I meant thin in the high mids and trebles especially. Yep, I've known about the eggs thing for a long time now. Was just saying it for the lols mate.

      if you priority is the lowest sub-bass e.g. 35hz and under, then get the BK Monolith Plus as the max output in that region will be about double the XTZ. This will be particularly noticeable when you watch movies.
      However, if you want overall good quality bass with more of a punch above 35hz, then go for the XTZ. I think the XTZ is the better all-rounder, but much depends on the size of your matching speakers.

    Great review, and I appreciate that you touched upon a few questions I had, such as how they compare to Cinema series. Had also read some older reviews that only talked of the 500-watt amplifier, and was pleasantly surprised to hear your notes on the juiced-up amp. I'd agree that its hard to beat in the EU, especially when it goes on sale.
    One question, how is the performance below 20hz?
    I was looking at the Arendal 1961, which is more expensive at Euro 1000, and the reviews speak of some moderate performance between 17hz and 20hz.

      Hello thanks for the question!
      Yeah it definitely is 700w RMS. The 700w amplifiers are the new 'Edge' amplifiers that XTZ have brought in. They are slowly rolling them out and they are soon rolling that amplifier out to the Cinema series of subs which will be amazing I am sure. XTZ also do an Edge Power amplifier (ICEpower Class D amplification) which you can use to power your speakers (sounds amazing).

      @@22ian22 Hi mate if you're 50/50 music/movies then I'd definitely recommend the XTZ. It has the extra power you'd need for the movies, plus the timeliness and accuracy of a more expensive subwoofer. Taking into account the price it's a no brainer if you ask me. And you get a 30-day no hassle return, which is rare I find. Speakers shops usually aren't so keen on me sending things back and they seem to encourage listening 'in our demo room' which I am not about at all!
      Only EQ I'm seeing is that from my Yamaha Aventage amp which does its own parametric EQ. I am personally looking at upgrading my room eq equipment in the near future as the microphones people use for calibration are not the best (even the ones bundled in the AV receiver box). I know a THX calibrator who paid around a grand for his calibration mic!
      Going off by what my amp and ears are telling me everything is pretty bang on until about 30hz and that's where we start getting the roll off. The roll off is less extreme when the right port is plugged, however you do lose a considerable amount of SPL when you do that.
      Hope this helps!

      @@22ian22 oh by the way, one more thing. I am told that there is apparently a 15 inch Edge sub in the works! Oh and it just has 1000W of Icepower amplification.
      Haven't heard that subwoofer in person..but I know it exists because I've seen it on an Indian AV website. Might be worth emailing XTZ to enquire about that.
      If you want this for movies as well as music I wouldn't hesitate recommending that as your first port of call, as this 12 inch I have could just do with digging a little deeper at times (excuse the innuendo)..

    Nice to see you went with the 12.17 edge after all (watched your mono review) yeah as suspected you’ll lose some low end spl coming from a mono, but the xtz makes up in the other areas you pointed out. Also, I’ve got svs soundpath feet on both my 12.17 edge’s no problems? They come with various screw sizes, and yeah I think I used the M6. Have another look, they must be able to fit with the right size screw 👍🏻

      Hi mate glad you watched the review and hope you enjoyed it :)
      I do feel the XTZ is the better subwoofer when you take into account the audiophile aspects of the bass performance..the Monolith just doesn't do it for me anymore. It's more of a conversation starter because of its sheer size and power; I feel after all this time BK could have made an upgraded Mono with better sound quality. I'm sure they could do it they've got the experience and the expertise right? I think the Monolith design is 15+ years old?
      I'm hoping a second XTZ sub will boost the lower frequencies a tad. In theory the system should gain between 3-6db which sounds small but makes a massive difference...just hope it's enough.
      If not, the other option I am loosely considering is getting a second sub and trying to do a sub match e.g. something like the SVS PC-2000 Pro, which is a monster of a ported subwoofer. Tying that together with the XTZ might give me that versatility between movies and music. Although we have a host of new problems like phase to consider etc..I tried this once before and it didn't work out to great if I'm honest lol. I think if XTZ just made a 15 incher of this model, it would be perfect.
      Yeah, thanks for letting me know that about the feet.. Someone else spotted that too and let me know there's more screws in the box. I bought those feet in 2018, so god knows where the box actually is (other half problems don't get me started!)

      @@edstark44 Hi mate hope you're doing well.
      Yeah, I am getting on well with the XTZ thanks. In terms of quality it's in another league compared to the Mono.
      I know what you mean about being curious about the Mono (as was I), but when I got my Monos I realised they weren't that great (I originally had the Monolith 300W, then I upgraded and went for dual Monolith Plus 500W).
      Don't get me wrong they're decent subs for movies and they'll go down low, but I just don't feel the fidelity is there for me.
      The XTZ is definitely not quite the same bass output as the Mono, but at the same time I can hear so much more in terms of what's going on in the movie. Each bass note has texture to make it sound believable rather than just 'thud thud thud', if you know what I mean.
      I think dual XTZ would just do the business for me but with the EU situation at the moment and ambiguity over imports/exports I'm going to pass on that perhaps for another couple of months!

Duals really need proper placement and integration, it’s not as set and forget as a lot of people think, I actual fact it can really hurt your response instead of enhancing it if not properly placed and integrated..(as is my case due to forced placement options) The measured graph looks very good, but that second not-so-good location is robbing me of some low end due to a dip. I expect this will be better than the BK Monolith as it's a newer design and has more onboard functions (BK Monolith is over a decade old now I believe). @geezerintotech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and thanks for the support! Glad I could help you in some way.
      I have a feeling the subwoofer is a fine size taking into account you're in a studio apartment. The first thing I would do is do a 'subwoofer crawl' (there are many videos online demonstrating this). Get some bassy tracks on and walk around the room. Then try and place your subwoofer in the spot which has the best bass response.
      Then try and listen to subwoofer in its new position and see you're getting the repsonse you are looking for. It is likely the 12 inch version will be a little better but I would only expect a few dB improvement - sometimes this is all the difference you are looking for though!
      Fortunately, XTZ does have a good 'buy and try' policy so you can always try the 12 inch version and return within 30 days. Another great option is the Arendal 1961 1v for a similar price (they also have great service and a longer 60 day buy and try option).
      Another subwoofer to consider (if you want something with similar performance to the 12.17 edge) and a bit more compact is the SVS SB3000 (one of my favourites at the moment).
      Hopefully this reply has given you enough to think about!
      Best wishes,

      @@geezerintotech Thank you for your reply! I have now been doing a lot tweaking with all of the settings. I am pretty satisfied now buy there are some things I've noticed. I have been trying different movies/music etc. When I try these base heavy test songs on youtube I find the base is delievering quite well. When I feel the sub is "lacking" was for example when I tried one of the movies you mentioned: Batman vs Superman.
      So I am new to this Subwoofer world hehe and the best way I describe it is that I felt that the sub was producing some blurry noises combined with some base notes that was correct. Basically I did not feel the overall sound was quite accurate at some scenes. One scene in particular was when Thomas and Martha Wayne is shot and you hear the gunshots. Also a little bit later when you see the giant robot attacks a building in Metropolis and Bruce Wayne is watching right after he lands from his Helicopter.
      My analysis is that my base has a hard time delievering the very low base notes in these scenes. What do you think?
      Thanks also for your suggestion about other models and brands.
      Do you think the 12. 17 Edge would perform better when it comes to these lower base notes?
      On another note, I was talking to a HIFI store yesterday about my sub vs the 12.17 edge. He said that my particular sub is very good in the sense it produces a very "warm" base sound and the 12.17 is more of a "precise" sub. I said, is it like comparing CD vs vinyl disc and he said yes. Do you agree with that?
      Another thing he mentioned was that the 12 inch model would probably perform better in the sense you could feel the base. But would have it more difficult to be as fast as my 10.17. As I understand my sub could be better at quick transitions of lower frequencies like when I listen to fast music with a lot of base.
      So why I bought the sub was mostly for movies and video games and also music (not first priority though).
      Do you think in general I would be more satisfied with the 12.17 edge compared to what I have now?

    Svs 16 ultra the sub to buy. I have the cylinder svs. I think hsu is a lower quality svs copy I rather build a sub using the edge sub and make a cylinder box for it good review thanks🇺🇸👍👌✌️🎶🎵🥂💯

      I agree - SVS make some insane subs. Especially that 16 Ultra series...the distortion figures for the driver size are off the charts. They do come at a price in the UK - I'm so jealous of you Americans it's actually painful.
      I really want the PB16 Ultra - but in the UK it's £2999! So about $3500 ... I'm sure that is $1000 more than what you guys are paying.
      So for now I have to stick with XTZ haha
      Peace dude ✌️

      @@josephsaucedo8691 that's a good point mate...I will have to look into this. I wonder if I will still get taxed on used goods from abroad?
      I am going to demo that PB16 next week and do a direct comparison to the Arendal 1723 2V.
      I want to see what the fuss is all about!

      @@geezerintotech Hey man, any chance of pitting the SVS PB-1000 Pro against the XTZ 12.17 Edge? I think that will be a spicy match up

      @@edstark44 Would love to mate if I can just get my hands on it.
      Can be quite difficult when you're: a) small youtube channel b) you're not afraid to say what you really think (can kinda get you into trouble 😂)
      To be honest, my preference (in my room) was the XTZ when I compared it against the PC-2000 Pro.
      I found the XTZ hit harder in the 50-60hz and above range, also had enough sub-bass and the bass quality and depth seemed better. Overall it's a more all-round sub so ideal for somebody who wants to listen to music too.
      As the PB-1000 Pro is lower down the range, I'd expect it to be an easy win for the XTZ in a small-medium sized room.
