  • JON SNOW IS LYANNA STARK'S BABY FROM THE TOWER OF JOY - GAME OF THRONES - SEASON SIX EPISODE TEN - FINALE
    R+L=J means -- Rhaegar Targaryen + Lyanna Stark = Jon Snow
    1. Following the tourney at Harrenhall, where the victor Rheagar Targaryen caused a scandal by naming Lyanna Stark the "queen of love and beauty" instead of his own wife, Lyanna was "kidnapped" by Rheagar Targaryen.
    2. Robert had been engaged to Lyanna (she did not approve of the match, believing that Robert would never be faithful). Robert started a war to get her back and eventually kills Rheagar in battle.
    3. Upon Rhaegar's death, Daenery's mother (who is pregnant) and brother flee Kings Landing to safety at Dragonstone. Rhaegar's wife and children are kept in King's Landing by the Mad King Aerys. (His wife, Elia was from Dorne, and Aerys hoped to use her as collateral against Dorne's fealty in the war.)
    4.The Lannister army arrives at Kings Landing, having only finally sided with Robert essentially once the war is won. To prove loyalty, Tywin Lannister orders the mountain Gregor Clegane to kill Rhaegar's wife and children. Ned is very upset about this and has a falling out with Robert about it. At this time, Jamie Lannister also assassinated the mad king (Daenerys's father). After hundreds of years of Targaryen rule, Robert is crowned king and marries Cercei Lannister.
    5. (SPOILERS BOOK): in the books, though not shown here, Robert is injured in battle so Ned ventures out alone and eventually reaches the tower where Rhaegar has been keeping Lyanna. He fights through three Kingsguard who Rhaegar has stationed there. Ned questions their presence there, as they were not in kings landing to protect the mad king when he died, nor were they with the heir Rheagar when he was killed in battle. They now have no king to guard besides the newly crowned Robert. They give ambiguous answers, stating that the kingsguard "do not flee" and they "keep their vows". Ned kills them with difficulty with the help of his companions, and enters the tower. He finds that Lyanna is dying in a "bed of blood" and she makes him promise her something unknown before dying. This promise haunts him repeatedly in his book chapters/ internal monologues.)
    6. Ned returns home to Winterfell with a newborn baby which he claims as his bastard son. Catelyn is shocked, as her and Ned were just married at the beginning of the war and he's been away fighting since. She has just given birth to Robb. Having this bastard son will prove to be a source of great dishonor for Ned and strain on his marriage, as he is known for being an incredibly honorable man.
    7. This bastard son, Jon is raised at Winterfell. He eventually joins his Uncle Benjen at the nights watch, relinquishing all lands, titles and fortunes.
    8. Upon the death of the Hand of the King Jon Arryn, which catalyzes the whole saga of A Song of Ice and Fire, Robert asks Ned to become Hand. Ned accepts begrudgingly.
    9. Robert is seen to be a drunk, philandering and lazy king, who is spiraling the crown into debt with his excess. Ned later refuses to cooperate with Robert in the murder of Daenerys Targaryen and her unborn child, and quits. This is the second time that Robert has shown a desire to kill every Targaryen he can find, child or not, as the Targaryen's are the only family that could threaten his rule.
    10. Ned is later reinstated as hand. He goes on to discover that Roberts children are illegitimate. Before telling Robert, he first warns Cercei to flee, insinuating that Robert will kill her and her children. This honorable decision is later his downfall. Cercei turns on him following Robert's death and has him imprisoned and beheaded for treason. Before his death, he lies and confesses his treason for the sake of Sansa who is being held by Cercei. He dishonors himself for the life and safety of a child, not for the first time.
    11. After Ned's death, we start to see different opinions which call into question the story that Ned put forth: that Jon is his bastard son.
    a)Many people insinuate that Ned was incredibly honorable, and it was uncharacteristic for him to have fathered a bastard.
    b)We see from Deanerys's perspective that Rheagar was actually a quiet, thoughtful, honorable guy who was likely in love with Lyanna.
    c)Ned at different points refuses to talk to Robert, Catelyn and Jon about the identity of Jon's mother. Sansa and Arya also tell us he very rarely talked about Lyanna.
    d)Before Ned dies, his thoughts indicate that he's remembering his sister dying, then he thinks of Jon and how he wishes he could speak to him again.
    e)Before learning of his father's death, Bran has a vision that he sees his father in the crypts at Winterfell: he seems sad and was saying something about Jon that Bran can't recall.

      As a High Lord and very pragmatic man (along with idealistic, yes); I don't think that Ned would have gone to the lengths to protect Dany's child if he didn't have another Targaryen child in mind.
      The view back then held by most of the council that the death of one person (Dany) would prevent the deaths of so many more...that view, while distasteful to our modern sensibilities, would have been no big deal back in medieval times. Ned has thousands of people to look after in the north. He would know that at times he has to seek out the best result for the many where a few may suffer. Stability is crucial to maintaining balance, peace, and prosperity. Especially given that Ned and his fellow Lords were no strangers to civil war. A repeat of Robert's rebellion would have been the end for many of them; and for many of their people.
      Modern liberty/liberal thought in the Western world has rejected sacrificing "one for the many" as unnecessary. But Westeros and Essos have not anywhere near reached that type of enlightenment yet. Ned's defense of a likely pretender to the throne, to the point of defying a king who has close to absolute power, which in turn puts Ned's immediate family at risk; makes....zero sense. None. Zip. The number of children threatened to be killed could have been a hundred times that number and the high Lords of Westeros (including idealistic Ned) would have breathed a sigh of relief that that was the limit to the carnage.
      Make someone very close to Ned a Targaryan though; add in a promise made by a very honourable man; and suddenly the words and actions that Ned employs actually make sense.
      Should he have been more brutal with Cersei? Yes! But this is showing his weakness as someone who wasn't raised to rule. He thought that she was more honourable than she was; he felt sorry for her that Robert had been an ass for their entire marriage; and yes, he wasn't fond of killing children IF there was another way.
      And he did ruin everything...pretty much. But Trevor's comment is bang on.

      So true, I can't stand when people hate on Ned (usually Stannis fans). Ned is a true hero in every sense. he tried to do right by his family, the realm, and by children that he doesn't know. Stannis is jealous of Ned because of what happened at the siege of Storm's End, and during the Greyjoy Rebellion. But it's not Ned's fault that the Tyrell's yielded to him. And it's not his fault that Robert chose him to take the glory at Pike while Stannis led the "true battle". Stannis is just jealous that Robert treated Ned like a brother, and always overlooked Stannis. Same reason he has contempt for Renly, Robert gave him Storm's End ahead of Stannis. Alot of Stannis' views of the world are made through the lens of all the ways that Robert wronged him (which he did). In summary, Ned is that dude :)

    In the books its crystal clear when Daenerys in the House of the Undying sees Rhaegar and Lyanna and a baby in one of the rooms. "Will you write a song for him?" -asks Lyanna. And Rhaegar responds "He is the prince that was promised his song is the song of Ice and Fire". Watching all those scenes with Ned again I can't believe that a man like that would actually have cheated on his wife for pure desire. He is willing to die instead of taking action against some bastards of which he knows that they are not related to his friend. The only thing he cares more about than his honor is his family though, so I think it is very likely that Jon is in fact a Stark - just not his son. He can't be Brandon or Benjen's son either because Ned promises Jon to tell him about his mother, so Lyanna is pretty much the only option left.

  • @c.f.b6585
    @c.f.b6585 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    The one hint that confirms it for me is when Ned is saying goodbye to Jon, he looks like he is about to cry. It clearly isn't because he is sending Jon to the wall, he clearly trusts him and has seen his endurance and prowess in combat throughout the years. It is because he reminds him of Lyanna, and in his mind he is sending whatever is left of Lyanna to the most dangerous place on Westeros, where he might die.

    It makes me cry to think how much ned loved Jon. And Jon thought he was just a second thought, since he was always pushed aside, encouraged to go to the watch ( admitedly a dire place to go ) and he felt abandoned and unloved. Lyanna Stark probably was the Knight of the Laughing Tree and after
    she defeated the three guys who bullied Howland Reed , king Aerys II
    sent Rhaegar to search for the vanished knight, but only his shield
    could be found.Probably Rhaegar found out that the knight was
    Lyanna and thats how they knew and met each other. After this event
    Rhaegar went on to win the tournament and shocked all by passing over
    his wife to crown Lyanna as queen of love and beauty. He never kidnapped her in fact he protected her from his father and Robert Baratheon and Richard Lonmouth

    This video made me realise why Ned had to 'confess' to treason and die. It wasn't just to protect his daughters, it was George R. R. Martin's way of showing us in the most incontrovertible way that Ned is a man who puts his family before his honour. It shows us that if it came to a choice of maintaining his honour as a loyal, chaste husband or protecting his sister's child and fulfilling his promise to her, he would always choose to do the right thing over preserving his reputation.

    • @anycullen21
      @anycullen21 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +Raptor Jesus Ned started a war for Lya so hurting Cat by raising jon in winterfell is not that difficult. And in the books when he lists his children names in his head is robb, sansa, arya, bran, rickon. Only those 5. But never Jon. And ned never insults or have a negative thought about rhaegar, the man who "raped" his sister.He actually thinks very often of him in the books. "When they killed lady, he could still hear sansa pleading, as lyanna had pleaded once." if sansa was pleading for ladys life, what could have lyanna have been pleading for if not her son?? who was the danger to rhaegars children, to Lady, to Bran?? house fucking lannister. And why lyanna wanted to rest next to her father and brother? She was an UNMARRIED STARK. it was her right to rest in winterfell, why would she beg? unless she married Rhaegar, and now that she was a Targaryen she should be in her husbands family crypt. That would make Jon king, and kings are dying like flies, thats why Ned kept his mouth shut.

    • @Justagirlwithasmile
      @Justagirlwithasmile 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      To add to that: Imagine for a moment that Robert discovered Rhaegar had fathered a child with his love Lyanna. You can bet your ass that kid would mysteriously wined up dead even under Ned's protection. There was only ONE way to keep that kid safe. The only odd thing is that Ned wouldn't tell Cat the truth- but I am guessing Lyanna made him promise not to tell a single person. I'm not a book reader but I can picture the dialog:
      "No one can know the truth. You have to protect him from Robert- from everyone. You have to promise me you won't tell a soul, not even your wife."
      "Lyanna..."
      "Promise me Ned."
      "I promise."
      Ned would die before he broke a promise.

      haven't read the books. but i have had the theory since season 1 that Jon is the bastard son of Robert. he certainly had Robert's genetic traits which Joffrey did not. it also is fairly obvious that Jon is descended from kings because Melisandre tried and failed to seduce Jon. She even subtly mentions why. the power she derives from sex with kings (and their sons) lets her do such evil and powerful things, there is no telling what was averted by Jon turning it down. i also think Jon is going to come back from the dead.

Ned who by all right should be the one to be outraged had nothing bad to say about the silver prince. He even remembered him as "gentle". Even the honorable people who knew the prince contradict Robert's accusations. Those people described him as kind and respectful. The people loved him so much and he also loved them back. They even thought that he would be a far batter king than his father

      +Daniela stor It's either Littlefinger knows or he doesn't. If he does, he's keeping it to himself for he has his own cards to play with. If he doesn't know that Jon is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna, his reaction to what Sansa said implies that he's smart enough to know that something just doesn't fit with all the "kidnapping and rape" story. Why? Because the prince was known as an honorable and a good man (who was so loved even by the masses) until the incident. So that probably explains Littlefinger's reaction. He's smart enough to know that the "kidnap and rape" story might be a lie.

    Two items convinced me of the probability........Honorable Ned's love for Cat.......Martin read lots of medieval literature. Methinks Jon's parentage is a take on Arthurian legend.
    Uther = Rhaegar, Lyanna = Ygraine, Ned = family relation, remote region = Winterfell, Arthur = Jon, Excalibur = Longclaw
    Uther Pendragon desires Ygraine who is wed to another. Merlin agrees to enchant Uther. Deceived by Uther in the guise of her husband, Ygraine accepts Uther into her bed. Merlin's price is their first born son. Merlin claims the infant Arthur to be raised in a remote corner of the kingdom by a family relation with Merlin as a resident tutor. Merlin's objective is to groom Arthur as future king since poppa Uther was a failed endeavor.
    Ned loves Cat and yet he burdens her heart with a bastard child from adultery. Not bloodly likely. Ned might be capable of a mistake or two but he would never bring his own bastard son into his wife's home. Instead, he would confess the adultery and find a safe haven for the child elsewhere. Cat loves him well enough to forgive a past transgression and not begrudge the ongoing support of a child who is not a daily reminder. Therefore, Jon is not Ned's son.What could make an honorable man tell such a lie, live with it every day of his life, place a shadow over his marriage, and greive his beloved? Only a higher demand upon his honor, such as a deathbed promise to his sister. Jon's parentage must be kept secret even from Cat because any bastard son of Rhaegar would be hunted down and murdered. Winterfell is the best protection that Ned can provide for Jon. Ned refuses to discuss details of his alleged adultery even with his old friend Robert Baratheon. That is not just because gentlemen don't kiss and tell. It is because Ned cannot risk Robert suspecting the lie. He can't risk Robert discovering that Jon is both a Targaryen and the son of Robert's one great passion.
    Ned agrees to Jon taking the black because Martin plans to more the Starks to King's Landing and Jon needs the beginning of his own storyline. A bastard cannot carve a niche for himself at King's Landing. Castle Black is even more remote than Winterfell. Cat remains at Winterfell so Jon no longer serves as friction to the marriage. His story would fade into the background if Martin had no other plans for Jon. We would learn about the wall from other characters such as Jeor Mormont, Benjen Stark, and Tyrion. Jon is a nobody in the story but Martin and HBO lavish attention on Jon's character development so he is intended to become a somebody. We're still wondering if Gendry drowned or rowed all the way to Plymouth Rock. Jon is not supporting cast to any other character. (Jorah is support to Daenerys. Davos is support to Stannis.) Instead, Sam is support to Jon. Members of the Stark family have their own storylines but Jon is not a full-fledged sibling.
    Also, Jeor gave Longclaw to Jon, which is outrageously inappropriate in the context of their world. House Mormont is not extinct. The family line does not die with Jorah. Mormonts have treasured their valyrian steel sword for five centuries. Hardly likely that Jeor would hand over a family heirloom to a bastard from another house even if Jon is one hell of a good kid. The justification for that gift has yet to be provided. Longclaw was handy to have against the whitewalkers, but that is not sufficient justification since it was a skirmish and not a victory . The Night's Watch knows the value of Longclaw and would not discard it. Learning of Jeor's death, the Mormonts would inquire. I cannot imagine Martin or HBO simply omitting what becomes of Longclaw from the remainder of the story. By rights it should eventually be restored to House Mormont. Jon has far more claim to either of the swords reforged from Ice, Uncle Ned's sword.

      +Valkyrie Sardo Chronologically Jon was born before Ned's wedding with Cat (so that could support R+L=J theory). At the beginning, Cat was supposed to be married to Brandon, the first born of Stark familly and Lyanna to Robert. But Brandon was killed during the war against the Mad King, so the two familly made Cat married to Ned instead, but he came with Jon. Lyanna was also killed during the war, so Robert married Cersei. At the beginning, the wedding of Ned and Cat was a little awkward because of their different religions : the 7 God for Cat and the old ones for Ned. But with time, they fell in love for each other and Robb was born of that love. However I agree that a person with a such sense of honor like Ned could not bed a girl outside the marriage, even if he was not engaged to anybody when Jon was "created" if he is truly his son.
      For Cersei, she wanted to married Rhaegar and become the Queen since she was a child, but her father did not agree because he prepared the war against Aerys the Mad King. And after the defeat of Targaryen familly, her father made her married to the next king : Robert. Then, he can access the power by becoming the Right Hand. but Robert chosed Arryn instead of him. That because Robert still loved Lyanna, even if he is now married to another woman and Lyanna is dead, that Cersei is mad at him and hates Stark familly and she get a revenge on Lyanna's brother: Ned by kill him.
      Otherwise, I agree with everything else you said ! :)

      +Chloé Bahuaud Bruh. Ned came back from the war with the baby, not to his wedding with Cat. The war already began when Ned went to Riverrun to marry Cat, he stayed long enough to impregnate her before he went back to war. Cat had already given birth to Robb when Ned came back with baby Jon, which means Jon and Robb are roughly the same age, only separated by a few weeks to months. Not a year or more.

      This might sound dumb, but if Jon snow is half targaryen, what if he is also immune to fire? It would be pretty cool if there ever was a scene where danerys dragons try to burn him but he just stands there with burnt clothes. haha just a thought

    4:42 "The next time we see each other, we'll talk about your mother" because by then Jon would have taken his vows and wouldn't be able to avenge / claim the throne and start a war.

      Maybe he never ment to become king, but have a bigger burden: like dealing with the Others. Maybe even be a sacrifice to them. That's one of my theories. The White Walkers are becoming instinct because their gene diversity is small, Jon on the other hand has blood of the First Men and the Valyrians flowing through him, which makes him very precious for the White Walkers.

    You really did a masterful job editing this. Cleanly establishes each character that is being discussed, then leads to the next with just the right amount of segue. And to top it off you arranged the score so that we weren't constantly jarred by soundtrack switches with each scene. Really, really well done.

    Very good video. I wanted to suggest adding to the time-line the fact that Rhaegar believed himself or his heir to be “The Prince who was promised” and that he, being of Fire (Targaryen), and Lyanna, being of Ice (Stark from the North), would be the union to deliver the “Sonf of Ice and Fire”.

    Every time I watch Ned on his knees, waiting to be beheaded, looking for Ayra, I swear I get teary eyed 😢 I absolutely stand behind R+L=J but sometimes I find myself thinking "is it just too obvious for George RR Martin?" But it certainly is the only theory the show has supported! I would be completely blind sided if it were any other explanation!

    • @Aurenzel
      @Aurenzel 8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      +Srikanth Menon It's actually the main reason why people think Jon is still alive. Put it this way, if Jon is dead, then R+L=J doesn't matter, why should anyone care about Dead Person 1+Dead Person 2=Dead Person 3? Sure it meant he was the heir to the Iron Throne through Rhaegar, but he would be dead, it simply wouldn't matter to the plot any more, but if he was still alive, or resurrected, the theory still holds grounds for major plot development

    Something about when Aemon talks its really powerful

  • @Alpha1200
    @Alpha1200 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Obviously, like many I suspected this for a long time and now it has been confirmed. But something I never really thought about until now is... Jon met another family member without knowing it. Poor old Aemon Targaryen met one of his family's last descendants and never even knew. I find that kind of sad. If only he'd been alive for when everyone comes to know it.
    Also, something I remember thinking at the time... it's great that Stannis basically figured it out. It's never really specified what he thinks of course, other than that Jon isn't Ned Stark's bastard, but I like to think he figured out the entire thing and just sat on the knowledge.
    The biggest clue I think in the TV-series was always that Ned Stark saying "you have my blood" but not "you are my son" in that moment combined with the fact that he was going to tell Jon everything AFTER he'd joined the night's watch (meaning he could never make a claim on the crown again).

    • @JC-eb5wr
      @JC-eb5wr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Everett Fletcher There is nothing after death, go back and reread or re-watch the show where Beric Dondarrion talks about being resurrected, according to him there's only the darkness. Now, I don't know if Beric was religious but it's very well possible that he followed the Seven and the Seven are false gods, possibly the old gods are the only "Real" gods, so for people that follow the old gods they have an afterlife. But as far as we know from what we've been told and read in the books, there's nothing after death in GoT, just blackness/darkness.
