  • Tim Minchin's 13 minute extended Live version of Dark Side (and probably the best version) from his 'Are You Ready For This?' Tour.
    Awesome in every way! Enjoy.
For all official Tim Minchin stuff. (Which this isn't, I'm just a fan)

As a touring lighting director for 23 years I *_really_* love how he integrates the LD into the show with the red lighting and then the haze machine !! The closest I got to that was when at one show the bass player was thanking the crew and forgot me, so when he said _”am I forgetting anyone?”_ I turned all the stage lights off. The mandolin/lead singer caught on, mentioned me and I had the lights explode with delight !!

And the second time they start clapping, off beat, he turns to face them a little bit, and starts stomping his foot in a pretty exaggerated way, so that they all have a visual cue to sink their clapping to! And it works!
Don't think I've ever seen that before.
A large group of white people trying to clap in time never works, but I've never seen the person on stage basically say "Hey you twats, if you have to clap, watch me!" and lead the whole audience.

It’s a cultural thing. Standing ovations are very rare in Australia. Artists get a round of applause and maybe a second round if they come back on quickly but that’s it. They’d better not milk that second round of applause or they’ll find themselves walking off in silence. I’ve seen that more than once.

+Abbie Robinson i swear to god no offense but literally every live concert i watch online or live at random intervals people clap, it has to be the most annoying thing on earth because it seems the people clapping are oblivious to the fact there is a SHOW ON, even then they can clap all they want but i swear it pisses me off even MORE when they STOP. because not only does it make them seem the biggest fool of the flock it also just show what they did even worse, its practically HIGHLIGHTING the damn people for clapping like idiots, realizing their mistake, losing the determination, stop clapping, and look literally like fools.
i swear the people who start this clapping deserve to have a spotlight put on them as they realize their obnoxiousness and stop clapping. even then they NEVER learn, i bet you these fuckers go to multiple concerts and just fucking clap every time. even worse is when a whole group of fuckwits decide to start a mini FUCKING PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN AND DROWN THE GOD DAMN ARTISTS OUT.

+Abbie Robinson Agreed! In this case I love Tim's comment about it ("Ah yeah, offbeat - wicked") which actually seems to help a bit.
What really pisses me off is people clapping as soon as there's a "soft" part in a song, I swear I've never wanted to obliterate people as much as when I went to see Opeth and people clapped like their lives depended on it during every single "soft" part.

being off beat does NOT mean being out of rhythm. playing off beat is not unusual for whole bars, or even entire songs, and for any percussionist worth their weight, is very important. its how the rest of the band can be in 4:4 while the drums are going off in 7:8, and you don't even realize you're hearing two time signatures. but i reckon if you can't tell when a clap is off beat vs not in rhythm, then you'd never realize you're hearing two time signatures.

blues is simple music made attractive by raw musical talent. check.
Jazz, on the other hand, is played by musicians with the best technical skills, or would you call Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane and so on (and there are loads of them there, who are virtually wizards with their instruments) musicians with "average" technical skill.
i mean, it's one thing if you don't understand music, another entirely if you don't like jazz/blues. did you ever hear Thelonius Monk?

@@smidget5843 Tim can't even read or write music. He just never bothered learning it.

"You could be clever as Voltaire, but it won't get you nowhere if you wanna sell discs...it doesn't appeal to the teenage market" rumbles in my head so much!! That and "Daddy never came to my ball games..." Brilliant.

Tim Minchin is both a master pianist and a hilarious comedian. A great combo. A legendary combo. Not nearly as famous and well known as he should be. He is well known, but not the billions of views that he should have imo.

I can have a dark side,
    If you want me to,
I can have a dark side,
I can develop my brooding potential,
If pain's what you want in a act,
    Pain I can do,
I can have a dark side, too
I can have a dark side... Too,
    Yippe!
    Love this bit

I love his comedy, i love his atheism believes.
But I ADORE his piano playing.
    It’s exquisite to listen to.
Not many performers can keep you listening & engaged in such a manner ♥️

My favorite version of the Daddy never came part: putting the hair over his face, the emotional face before he starts singing, and especially the freak out! Definitely, pain he can do!

He’s the only person I can think of who can literally make the audience laugh during an instrumental portion of his song purely on how he plays. To be able to articulate his humor purely through his fingers is nothing short of perfection.

My mum was a piano teacher and I so wish she was here to see this GENIUS
She might not have got all his humor but definitely would appreciate his piano skills - I ADORE TIM and everything he does

I dont agree with the title because it implies that Minchin has done something that isn't awesome.

    • @StoneSixOnes

+EdMcStinko I think the title comes from the fact that this version is longer. more tim = more awesome.
