@Unknown 07 - I have to agree. Imagine having to work 8 hours per day or more, and all you can afford to live in is a little hole in the wall. Humans are being conditioned that we must work our entire lives and spend most of our money to live in a box.
@Brian Fike i believe the intention of the comment is not being ungrateful for what you have, rather it is sad that it has become a norm for a person to work their entire lives, every waking moment , simply to just be alive. Destroying the actual gift and enjoyment of life, making one live to work rather than work to live.
@Brian Fike how is food a want? Food and housing is a necessity its not like their fighting to work their ass off to live in a mansion. They are fighting to live in a closet. I dont know what silver spoon you came from but you clearly havent experienced a struggle if that is your outlook.
@Brian Fike so being homeless and starving regardless that your working everyday is a choice, so if your working and nowhere will hire you to make more money, and all you can manage to buy is scraps from a dumpster, it is a choice to eat the scraps, no. At that point it is a necessity, a need. Not a want. Thats your outlook, interesting, well i wish you well bud, clearly your mindset on what a want/need is, is quite severely twisted and misguided. Surely if you ever happen to be in the same situation in life, hopefully you keep that same mindset so when your the one working just to eat, let alone thrive, somebody can look you in your face and say its your fault aswell.

I think Hong Kong has remedied that a long time ago. They built rail lines that serve far flung areas so that people don't crowd the old business districts in Hong Kong island and Kowloon peninsula. So most public housing estates in Hong Kong have access to train stations for easy commute to where they work. And Hong Kong MTR is very efficient and trains are on time.

It's not idealic. Huge strain can bear down on the family if they have to look after a relative who has dementia and incontinence. A lot of people want help with their elderly relatives but feel that it is not an option (socially or because they cannot afford it). If the government had not made it illegal to abandon elderly relatives, then there would be a lot more cases of it. The law also means that children are sometimes forced to look after abusive parents who were never there for them when they were young. Sometimes looking after elderly relatives is wonderful, but other times it is a nightmare. Many elderly people end up working long into old age to earn their keep. Sometimes it is the elderly who end trying to remedy glaring holes and social inequalities in the system, such as a lack of affordable childcare for children in a society with great wealth inequalities. There are many children whose parents have to work so hard to support everyone, that they have been almost solely raised by their grandparents and barely know their own biological parents. I think that people should only look after their parents if it's what both parties actually want, rather than because they have been forced by a combination of circumstances, social pressures, societal failings and the law.
Im southeast asian. Its taboo to let your elderly parent/s live alone. Sending them to old folks home is also frowned upon akin to abandoning your responsibilities as a filial child. Society does not look kindly to adult children who are unfilial and are thought to be ppl who are cursed (not to sound dramatic) and generally not decent people.

You’d be surprised to know that there exist buildings like the ones Alan lives in, right on the Bowery in Manhattan. I couldn’t believe what I walked into when I saw that.
I saw similar conditions in London. Problem with Hong Kong is, in my opinion, that it's one of the places in this world where people (unlike in NY, LA or London) don't have any other option unless they are willing (and allowed) to actually leave their country 💔
I recently moved my retired mother and I into a one-bedroom apartment just outside LA. I had to give her the room and opted to get a sofa bed in the living room for myself. I was starting to feel bad about my situation, but after seeing this video I’m just suddenly really grateful. The living room feels quite spacious now.
definitely.... and HK is extremely hilly, very narrow on the streets and the streets are shuttered also... only easy to get along for him in the malls...
I remember falling in love with this city once searching it up and seeing how beautiful it looked and how fun it must be to visit but in the back of my mind I couldn't stop thinking how difficult it must be to live there seeing how tight all of the buildings looked and started theorizing how those apartments must be smaller than the ones in New York City, which are VERY small and expensive
You never know how great your situation is till you see someone worst off than you. I pray Allen and many others like him get a home soon. Love your work keep it up. 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
In your opinion, who is making them? The government is providing council homes presumably much more than they earn, as they are in lots of national debt, the landlord is just trying to give them SOMETHING, rather than nothing, despite him risking being arrested. So just curious who/what are you blaming?
The landlords of those places aren’t preying on people like Alan, they are providing him with something when the alternative is nothing. As they said, those high-density units are “illegally” divided into small sized units, but the government lets it happen because there is a massive housing crisis.
This literally brought tears to my eyes because I literally took a two bedroom apartment I don't need instead of a one bedroom because it was available right away and it was only $20 extra a month compared to the one bedroom. Now granted I was up against time in terms of moving and if I hadn't of taken this place I would have had to tough it out on the streets for a month until the one bedroom was available, but NOTHING compares to what goes on in other places...I would have been safe. My spare room currently holds empty boxes and a tiny table lamp 🤦♂️. These people would be floored to see the space I have for the price I pay. Put it this way, I'm actually ashamed to admit I pay less rent than Alan and my bedroom CLOSEST is twice the size of his entire living space. I mean don't get me wrong I have other bills, but I could easily cut them or drastically reduce them if I chose to live without certain luxuries. This is exactly why I get frustrated with Americans who complain about not having enough stuff. Be grateful you have choices folks because many don't.
I love tiny houses and currently live in a studio flat, but I could never imagine just having that tiny cupboard to live in. I will never complain about not having enough space.
Kiwi here too. By crikey we have it so good here, in comparison to Alan anyway. And he's just one of tens of thousands who live in these insane holes...holding down a job, without complaining and keeping a humble attitude. So much to learn from people like him...
So humbling. I try to not take anything for granted, but this made me realize how very little I have to complain about with the small house I live in. Sidenote: The host is an exceptionally handsome man.
Also, we consume so many products assembled by people like this living on a pittance crammed into these awful literal shoebox apartments with their relatives so corporations can save money and people can buy more crap they don't need.
Better than the equality that results from no opportunity. Any government attempt to forcibly create equality just leads to a ruling class and a lower class. I prefer the inequality that comes with freedom and opportunity.
That one in the video is considered higher end. It wasn't chicken wire cage material and there was aircon. It was also slightly more spacious than some.
This kind of backhanded sympathy is so disgusting and so uncalled for. You can sympathize with someone without insulting them in the next breath. smfh.
Kyle Lopez-Vito : This happens even in the USA. Landlords subdivision of apartment space. The rooms are not closet sized, But in some parts South St.Louis City. I've seen 6 adults single men packed into five rooms They usually share bathroom @ kitchen
This is heart wrenching! The inequality in access to even basic rights is at its pinnacle. I'm hoping government do something to provide basic housing.
@@Anthony-he3yn perhaps, the original poster does not speak as eloquently in English as you do and so has difficulty putting into words how they feel for the individuals in the video.

Here in America, I live in a 4400 square feet home and I honestly feel like I don’t need that much space. When I grow up someday I hope to help those in need in Hk have a better living space. Housing and renting their is just ridiculously high!!! 🙏🏽
The sad problem is nobody in Hong Kong wants to help. If supply goes up, prices will fall, and nobody in the middle and upper class will support that, and you need at least 2 out of the 3 social stratas to make any change
Hongkong is a very crowded place and worse than London and Tokyo. So what do you expect,if you do not have money? More and more homeless people sleep outdoors even in chilly winter days in the uk. These people are luckier in some ways to sleep indoors. It is not too bad to sleep outdoors in hk because this a warm place.
Its just completely heart breaking, I'm saving this video and every time family or friends moan about life, I'm going to make them watch it. can you imagen how soul destroying it must be for people who live like that, and to think even more about those with no home at all
You know what is most heartbreaking, I work in customer service and I talk to many people from rich to poor. Even though the poor are living in hellish conditions they are kinder and polite to people while the Rich and their spoilt kids will treat you as if they own you. God help the poor including me and my family.
I live in Hong Kong. I can never understand how these landlords will create these illegal and inhumane "rooms" and rent them out, all for the sake of profit.
because of the human nature of selfishness. I can't tolerate this disgusting behavior wherein people who own more are not willing to care and share with the destitute. Bastards ain't know they don't deserve this much they are just taking things bit by bit away from the poorest group that even more widen the income gap.
They didn't eliminate Kowloon Walled City, they just spread it out. I'm going to go enjoy pacing up and down my hallway for a minute or two, and counting my blessings with each step.
Fun fact: My Grandfather's family, when he was a kid, lived in a two or three story house on a hill overlooking the Hong Kong harbour pre-WWII. In the many family films they took you can see the whole of the harbour. There were just a few wooden ships. You can see labourers building wooden structures. The streets looked almost like a mini London with lanterns and signs like you'd see in any Chinatown. And hundreds of people strolling up the large main roads. Some out for a walk. Others carrying supplies on their shoulders. It was really a different world. Absolutely looks nothing like Hong Kong today. Then WWII hit, and my family had to flee the country. They lost the house and pretty much all the belongings left behind. The family films were some of the only things recovered.
@@gillallmond9145 That's true. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm honestly not sure where those films are being stored currently or with which family member :) I completely agree though. The films would be best kept in a public archive where they're safely stored and others can look at them too. Way safer then in a cardboard box somewhere gathering dust. We have other family films in an archive already for that reason. And it's worked well. They actually ended up getting used in a documentary series here.

This is insult to human existence .
@@meanderingmike7640 - Perfectly stated, thank you!
As you grow older you realise all men and women are just children who’ve been here longer. I really empathise with people like this and homeless. It’s a shame the people at the top don’t care, only to make themselves richer

I think Hong Kong has remedied that a long time ago. They built rail lines that serve far flung areas so that people don't crowd the old business districts in Hong Kong island and Kowloon peninsula. are you stupid?
I appreciate the Asian families I see sharing space with their aging parents. It feels right to help them after they raise you.
Not all.families are wonderful. With abusive parents you really gotta move away for your own sanity

Total respect for Adi. Total disgust and anger at the greed of people that make people live like this - how do THEY sleep ?
