    I've loved the y-wing ever since I first played the original battlefront 2 on the PS2. I got so skilled that I could and still can dogfight with ease.

    The Y-Wing was always my favourite rebel strike craft. Kind of like the RAF in the battle of Britain where the Sleek and prestigious spitfire got all the credit it was the forgotten Hawker Hurricane that was the workhorse of the RAF. So is the Y-Wing of the Rebel Alliance. It was a much simpler and more robust craft than the X-Wing. And very versitile. Compared to it's peers yes it's slower and less gainly. But for a Bomber, it's rather fast and manuverable. It's extremely tough, both in shields and hull, and easy to both repair and maintain. The X-Wing for all it's virtues, was a nightmare for maintenance crews. Though an X-Wing did blow up the Death Star, For the majority of the battles, It is the Y-Wing that took the brunt of fleet battles and inflicted the mos casualties. An amazing craft indeed and very unappreciated, It's the unsung hero of the Rebellion.
    Also, having flown it myself in many games and especially Star Wars Galaxies, I adorethe gun placement. Because the guns were on the nose of the Y-Wing, landing hits was easy and did not have to worry about convergence. Excellent when you're up against TIEs where then the ship profile is quite small and precision counts.

    Always reminds me of a Douglas DC-3. A sturdy old workhorse that didn't change much because it didn't need to, amazingly effective with the right guy on the stick, and the only replacement for it is another one.
    I'd give it a go.

    At the beginning of a mission, I used to lock on to Imperial Fighters at long range with the proton torpedo launcher. They had a longer targeting range to the lasers. Once on a perfect head to head I'd switch to unlinked laser and fire continuously at just beyond maximum range. Ties flew into a hail of laser fire and were picked off before they knew what hit them. Could take on Interceptors coming at me in pairs all day long. Racked up 48 in one mission, half at long range, half in dog fighting. Then I went after the Destroyer.
    In the old roleplay capital ship fleet games, they played an invaluable role in disabling Imperial ships, even capital ships, allowing them to be boarded. That is how the Rebels built up fleets, a few ships at a time.
    The BTL Y-Wing.
    It ain't what you got. It's how you use it. Give me a squadron on Y-wings and I'll take out two squadrons of Interceptors.

    I would consider the Y-Wing the P-47 Thunderbolt of the Rebel Forces. A bit outdated, but able to take punishment that would cripple an X-Wing. The Rebel alliance B-Wing would be considered the A-10 Warthog. Excellent video!

    "The Y-Wing is the workhorse of the Rebel fleet. Its not quick or flashy, but it gets the job done. The armor on this ship is extensive, and the shields will protect you from just about anything. Which is good, cause you won't be going anywhere fast. The Y-Wing is used mainly as a bomber. It can carry heavy payloads of missiles, torpedoes and bombs. The other important weapon, is the topside Ion Cannon. Which rather than destroy a target, can disable it for later capture. Our cannons have a computer auto fire feature, so don't forget that when your in the heat of battle." -Rogue Squadron description of the Y-Wing

    Before Disney killed the Star War franchise, I LOVED the Y-Wing despite it's flaws. I even started a fanfic back in highschool about the reformation of Gold Squadron after they were massacred at the Battle of Yavin. This was before fanfic.net came along of course and I hand wrote it. I had a Galoob Y-wing Starfighter Mico Machines Action Fleet model on display for the longest time. But after Disney bought out Lucas Arts I knew what Disney was going to do with the franchise and gave away all of my SW stuff. The only thing I have left is my original Star Wars Shadows of the Empire game for the PC (had N64 version too but gave that away) and a couple of Dark Horse comics.
    Just a couple of things you forgot. The Y-Wing could also carry proton BOMBS. The same type of bombs the TIE Bombers use. It was also the longest serving fighter craft in all of Star Wars (at least according to the original canon). It was still serving as a long distance and deep space armed scout and reconnaissance ship 80 years after the Civil War. That's a service life of over 110 years!

    My favorite fighter has always been the Y Wing I always imagined Y Wing pilots developing tactics similar to the US Navy pilots against the Japanese during WWII. Tactics like the Thatch Weave and others developed to take advantage of the American fighters' strengths of power and toughness to deal with the more lightly protected and nimble Japanese fighters. Anyway that's this Y Wing pilot's thoughts on the matter.

    poorer turn rate, but good armor at least around the engine and cockpit specifically, the main tactic was to charge them straight on with their bigger guns, two 50 cals. and four 30 cals. (different guns on the first model) and win a machine gun stairing contest jousting style.

    ya know the light laser turret could be stupid powerful against the unshielded ties, it doesn't need to be a big massive gun, just quick fire to scare them away since they can't afford to be hit by laser canons, hell that would make even tie interceptors think twice before closing on a slow bomber

    There was also inspiration from another fighter that had roughly similar direct strike capabilities and used the same tactics when "dogfighting", at least the closest they could come to it having heavier fighters that while fast were not as maneuverable. The P-40 Tomohawk, or Warhack as some called it, with the iconic Tiger Shark Teeth painted along the engine fuselage

    That Y-Wings were in fact only slightly slower than the X-Wing due to the removal of all armor plating except the cockpit to allow for decent to good durability for frontal charges and a chance to get through flak screen from capital ships.

    It is worth noting that a squadron of Y-Wings is capable of downing a TIE Defender with their dorsal ion cannons, provided the pilots were either exceptionally skilled, force sensitive, or preferably both. Such a feat was achieved at a skirmish within Archeon Nebula in the weeks leading up to the Battle of Atollon.

    • @grand-dadmiral
      @grand-dadmiral 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is not true. The Y-Wing had many flaws, both on the tactical and operational levels. It's slow, cumbersome, antiquated and ludicrously high-maintenance. Tough as nails, of course, and rather effective in its role as a tactical bomber, but it does have shortcomings.

      According to Legends sources, the Y-Wing is slower than the X-Wing in atmosphere (1000kph for the Y-Wing versus 1050kph for the X-Wing), and the X-Wing is by far the greater accelerator in space (Having 100 MGLT to the Y-Wing's 80 MGLT(Megalights per hour), versus the 70 MGLT in canon, though Legends sources are disputed and contradictory).

      @@grand-dadmiral Referencing a game won't help because in games Y Wings were always needed from their real capabilities. What matters is how George Lucas made them out to be. While a Defender is indeed much difficult to handle, mind you not impossible. We can clearly see a Y-Wing taking out two Tie Interceptors on screen in Return of the Jedi.
      Y Wings were already effective fighters until X Wings came and after that they were relieved from dogfighting to fulfill more suitable mission profiles. Especially the Btl S 3 Variant was very difficult to take down with skilled turret gunners. Thank you for bringing Legends resources because that just backs up my point. The top speed of X Wings and Y Wings are almost same. Both craft has their own advantages. I can go on write an essay on it but I don't think that's necessary. My point is Y Wings were never as bad as you make them out to be. The games had to balance them as they are too useful as they are normally are. I have canon sources on my hand so it is pointless to discuss.
      I dare say while old, a well maintained Y-Wing Squadron would be useful even during Last Jedi era. B Wings also never actually replaced Y Wings because they were deemed too complex to fly due to gyro cockpit mechanism system. It was slower than a Y Wing anyway.

    The Y-Wing could do a bunch in games as long as you account for the speed you could pull off a bunch if you sniped the whole way. I loved it. Methodical approach to capital ships means you only have to focus on enemy fighters. Beefy in one-on-ones and the ability to attack shields directly. I forget if Y-Wings were able to disable planetary shields as well but that would make them so versatile, been too long...

    The other main tactic. you guessed it, slow down and circle so that they never get squarely behind you. The other other one was to climb like a bat out of hell with greater emgine power and dive on them. With more weight and engine power they had greater energy output at steep angle, HERE they actually were more maneuverable, with better cockpit armor, guns and speed to boot. Climb and dive, climb and dive. Leap frog hit and run.

    The Y-Wing ALWAYS had a seat for that "gunner" position, for someone to man the Ion blasters on the roof. However, it is my understanding, that it wasn't utilized as it should be during the Rebel Alliance, on the sheer fact that they could not spare the manpower to man them. So, in nearly every instance when the Y-Wing was deployed, the Ion Blasters were in a "locked-forward" position, and their fire control was re-routed through the pilot's selection. As for the comparison to the "Y Wings" of the considered "prequel" movies (what FUBAR they were), you would have to take into consideration that they are entirely different models of the same ship line. Like comparing a 1990 Ford Escort with a 2001 Ford Escort. Same family line, entirely different ship. The "Ball" turret was just streamlined, though the turret didn't allow much for an up/down variance with the ion blasters (on the later models), it DID, however, allow for a (if used) gunner to track and even defend the Y's tail against assailants.

    I always thought the long cockpit allowed for a gunner to sit in back of the pilot and shoot the ion cannons on top of the ship, I didn't know there used to be a bubble canopy although I suppose it makes sense to allow visual as well as sensor tracking of targets. If only the Resistance had had a squadron of Y-Wings at the battle of D'Qar in TLJ, they wouldn't have lost all those stupid bombers.

    I miss West End Games' take on the Y-wing. It wasn't as fast as a Tie fighter but it was just as maneuverable. It meant the Y-wing could get into a turn fight and rely on its tougher hull and actual shields (to say nothing of equal anti-fighter guns) to beat the Tie fighters. Things could go pair shaped and they were really hard pressed to make good their escape short of hyper space jumps but they at least had options.

      While I get the idea, if Hurricanes had a similar firepower to Y Wings, the Reich would end prematurely :D

    Load it up with concussion missiles and it becomes an anti-fighter missile boat similar to the Star Wing.

      Yeah for this particular one, the X-wing novels, and the old games, the maneuver with the protons and X-wings is on wookipedia, but its a tactic Admiral Pellean used as well one one of the Zahn novels. For other ships sometimes I just devise it based on the design features.

    According to the Last Jedi, all you have to do with a beat-up old y-wing is aim it at the Old Death Star in episode 4 and hit the hyperdrive. >:( Would have been a way less exciting and dramatic end to the film.

    • @BMichaelGalloway
      @BMichaelGalloway 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Catalyst375 you have no concept of the relativistic physics as it relates to this particular action.. Anything moving at hyperspace speeds, which is in the fiction faster than light, it could be a meteorite, a y-wing, or anything and when it impacted its Target, the destruction would be catastrophic. Even to a planet. Not to the mention just an oversized Star Destroyer.

    • @tTaseric
      @tTaseric 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would assume the Death Star has much stronger shielding than the Mega Star destroyer, as it probably had this in mind, although The First order would not expect the Resistance to waste its only capital ship on the Ship, and didn't have the shields, or just didn't have them up due to using more power for Turbo lasers or engines.

    • @Catalyst375
      @Catalyst375 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Anything moving at hyperspace speeds would be IN Hyperspace, not realspace. The Holdo Maneuver is only possible as a ship ACCELERATES to light speed i.e. before they enter hyperspace. A Y-Wing ramming the Death Star at relativistic speeds would do only one thing: put a crater in the Death Star and fail to cripple or destroy it.
      It is mind-boggling that you think you can take relativistic physics and try to apply it OUTSIDE THE SPEEDS DEFINED BY RELATIVITY (faster-than-light). It is one of those things that can't be done.

    Isnt it kind of bizarre that the Y-wing, with two massive engines, is slower than the Xwing with the four small engines or the TIE/ln Fighter with two tiny engines?

  • @TedSchoenling
    @TedSchoenling 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Bad tactics to sit still. In the X-Wing game I could easily dog fight while flying a y wing. you just have to pick your targets carefully and perhaps direct some shields to engines.

    • @nilok7
      @nilok7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it more comes down to the issue the Tie is vastly more maneuverable and can easily stay in the Y-Wing's shadow, but against a couple Tie, it can force them to not be able to use their speed to stay behind it by just stopping. This tactic would get it easily killed in a major battle, but in an isolated skirmish can force the Tie to not be able to use it's only strength.

      @ExTank I'd question how reliable the X-wing games are in really answering this question.
      Especially since I could single-handedly take down a star destroyer with a single X-wing more often than not, and that's even with tie fighters constantly flying around harassing me...
      The B-wing was so overpowered almost nothing else stood any chance against it unless you basically fell asleep halfway through an engagement...
      I'm reasonably sure it doesn't give a particularly balanced view of what these fighters were capable of.
      Still, the Y-wing was the most difficult craft to fly effectively. (or rather, to not get killed in. XD)
      So there is that.

  • @Hurricanelive

    y-wing is the best poor mans bait and the best poor mans hammer. Always have two on flight roster and if you aren't knocking out caps then you have 3 tie wings just chasing them while your bread butter x-wings are knocking them out left and right. Until you field B-wings then gg Empire gg, you may as well disconnect. Ion fighters always on hand when you feel the space lanes are interdictor heavy. y-wing is a great ship, same with A-wing in a mix of fielded fighters, more so with superior pilots. I love watching cap shields just plummet to nothing after the first salvo of a Y or B wing squadron. Time to run away! Run away!

    You should do a battle tactics for tue opening battle in The Last Jedi. But as a, this is what you SHOULDN'T do in space battles. On both sides of that battle because both sides were thoroughly incompetent.
