  • 30-year-old Asian elephant Sak Surin has returned home to Thailand two decades after he was sent to Sri Lanka as a gift from the Thai royal family. In Lanka, Surin was abused, neglected and inflicted with wounds.

We gave the elephants as ambassadors, but Srilanka government gave them to temples which treated our elephant as money makers and as slaves. This is unacceptable. His physical injuries shows severe abuses, we now found one of his eyes also injured from being hit while all four feet reveal only thin layer left from burning. The skin are so thin to the point that all nails collapsing. Even though physical wounds can be treated, but mental health will need a very long time to heal. We not even know if the elephant mental health can return to a healthy stage. By the way, tht temple and those monks pay zero money for all of this transportation and treatment. All expenses covered by Thai ppl tax money, but i am ok with it. As Thai, I don’t mind to pay or do whatever it takes to bring the elephant back.

Saksurin now lives in elephant veterinary hospital located near tropical forest in northern Thailand where the atmosphere was perfect for wildlife.
3 vets was assigned to take care of him.
2 caretakers live with him almost 24 hours
He get to eat unlimited fresh cut hay and receive snacks many times a day got to play with sand and take a bath whenever he wants
He was pampered and given the best life elephant can have right now.
Thailand sent elephants as asdiplomatic gifts to Denmark, Japan, Australia, Sweden as well and NEVER in the history that we take any elephant back like this... This already tell how terrible Sri Lanka have managed our elephant ambassadors
Saksurin has injuries all over his body he has huge wounds with enormous pus inside, his eye also injured his front leg also cannot bent and likely can't be cure back to normal
His physical and mental health will need a very long recovery to be back to normal
Thailand also spent at least 570,100 USD just to bring Saksurin back home this does not include his veterinary fees and other costs but we value his life much more we hope people of Sri Lanka understand and take better care of all elephants not just abuse and forced to work like that it was unethical unacceptable and unbelievable to see monks in Buddhist temple did that.

We highly expected Srilanka to take care the rest of Thai elephants better and if Srilanka government couldn't bare with food expense or veterinarian bills please contact us then we will immediately take the rest of our gifts back home and take care with our best ....With Respect from Thailand and in Thai (เราหวังว่าคุณจะเข้าใจ)

I am so sad to know this news.
I am very happy that it’s back to my homeland. The Buddhism ☸️ ; the Buddha teaches us to have the mercy to other and be enlightened by his teaching. He had not taught us to attach to anything. What these monks done were the opposite ways.
They used the elephants to find the money and reputation. It was sad that the monks done this. The ignorance hided the true wisdom. The belief without the true wisdom brings the worst thing happened. They believed that the elephants with beautiful ivory is the best characteristic to do this jobs. These elephant had to train so hard everyday for 20 years and had to do this jobs for 30 times a year.
So sad that this ignorance and this belief make human abused the animals.
Thais people really love an elephant and we take care them so well. Even we love all elephants but it won’t be the issues here if they done this to their elephants because we have no right to interfere with theirs politics. These elephant is our beloved one and we have the right to this elephants so we have to protect him.

They tortured until the elephant really got ANGRY... as kid I couldn't tolerate seeing the elephant... I was crying standing there with my father. People gathered to see elephant working... I did so with the blessings of the then Maha Nayakas. It was as a result of my request that the King and the Royal Family gifted Thai Raja to the temple in 1986. I came across this video when I was searching for the story of Sak Surin, This News Woman doesn't know or have no proper information on this story. Sak Surin was returned to Thailand for treatment for his leg. Water Therapy isn't available in Sri Lanka. Therefore it was decided to send him back to Thailand for treatment. Some $$$ seeking NGOs are making in Sri Lanka to defame the country. The Thai Ambassador has promised in writing to return this Elephant after treatment. He was not abused but Sri Lanka didn't have the facilities to treat his wounded leg. In fact, the wound is 90% recovered, for the balance of recovery he will be treated in Thailand. Looking at the accent of the Channel presenter I assume that she is an Indian, So my advice to the channel is to focus on Indian human rights, and Animal rights issues in India rather than a wounded elephant in Sri Lanka. That will even help your poor channel to do better. Those Sri Lankans who have negative comments here need to understand that this has nothing to do with politics. Politicians are corrupted in Sri Lanka India and even Thailand up to a certain scale. @ArisaMori To return or retain him up to the Thai Government and People of Thailand. But my point is that he was not abused. And this should not be used to defame a country. This news is merely created to continue to defame troubled Sri Lanka. This is politically motivated news. hope this comment will not get removed. There are more Animal Abuse cases reported in our neighbor countries than in Sri Lanka. Just search online. U will come across 100s of heartbreaking videos. and see where they are happening.

Why would we want to return him to a country that first abuse him and as you said, won’t have a facility to treat him? Big no

Dude, look at the picture of the wounds and other health conditions of an elephant...Thai veterian said, Suk surin's condition is serious so, the elephant must stay in Thailand for the treatment until his last breath and die in peace in his motherland.

Thai got him back because he got abused, bro. 30 times a year is totally called abused. Making money from innocent animal, and don't even give a proper food because how lazy the care takers are, and don't give him the therapy when he sicks un til he got severe. Asking for money when Thai want to take him back, and don't even help to pay for the transportation. You still think this is not called abuse? Don't you have shame on you?

Millions of Sri Lankans wish fully recover and long life for Muthu. ❤
May be Muthu will be recorded physically with great support of kind Thai people❤ & Authorities❤
But it seems he is badly missed the life in Sri Lanka😢 , His friends😢, his old way of living😢 , fresh air water and the nature of Sri Lanka😢.
His recent disobedience proves & depicts his minds.❗
We Millions of Sri Lankans who love Muthu are closely watching the Mental health of Muthu and we will raise the voice if necessary but not in such a way that thai people did.
We will not harm the Global Image of Thailand for any matter.
    We love Thailand 🇹🇭 ❤.
The sad thing is it seems like many thai people are fooled by the false spreadings of NGOs and individual personalities who want to be popular using anything. Otherwise what's the point of blaming whole Sri lankan Buddhist community for just a matter handled by just afew people.
Considering Kandula and Thai Raja; the take back home request of small number of thai people i's a totally different ideaology.
Both tuskers are healthy and living a good life in here Sri Lanka .
Most importantly they are offered to Sri Dalada Maligawa. So they are considered as offers for Buddha Sasana🙏.
If really thai people want to take them back to Thailand it will raise questions about the respect to Buddhism in Thailand.
However let's see.. Afew decades ago these tuskers are shared to make better not bitter relationship within two countries. If some fools want to use innocent tuskers as a tool to harm the relationship of two countries it's not only a harm for tuskers but also a huge betrayal for ancestors of both countries.
I think both Sri Lankans 🇱🇰 and Thai 🇹🇭 people want better & better relationship❤🙏
So wish Amazing Buddhists people of Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 and Thailand 🇹🇭 will resolve all the probs without harming the relationship and global image of each countries.
May the Triple Gem BUDDHA🙏 DHAMMA🙏 SANGHA🙏 bless all the people who support Muthu❤
    ✨May Muthu obtain good health.
    ✨May everyone obtain good health.
    ✨May everyone attain Nibbana 🙏
    Theruwan Saranai🙏

I am Sri Lankan, and I am convinced that this story is NOT TRUE, and is politically motivated !
No way this can happen in Buddhist Sri Lanka, at a Buddhist temple to boot !
Something is VERY FISHY about this story !

Well, you can see the condition of elephants for yourself: Sak Surin's left front leg is stiffed and cannot bend. He's got abscess (humps of infections) on his hips. It's now found that he's got cataract in his eyes. He needs urgent treatment in all cases, as his treatment and care is long overdue. Not to mention he was overworked by the Buddhist temple, etc. So, it's not politically motivated.
