It's 1:30 am in Tanzania now....and this is the only video that has given me a reason to sleep comfortably! Thank you so much Dennis Ivy! Well explained and answers so many questions why big companies don't use wordpress. It still has its place though
Truthfully, most of these examples could easily be built with WordPress. It's often a lot faster to build a custom plugin or to add custom functionality to the theme than to code an entire e-commerce site from scratch. I was resistant to this for years and I've finally realized that I should work smarter not harder. You mentioned that you could hand-code a site faster than using wordpress and I can only assume that you have a rock solid boilerplate that you start from.
My story is similar to you for small ecommerce projects I use wordpress and for large I use hand-coding but keep in mind to customize things in wordpress you will require Intermediate level of html , css, Js, php to get how specificty works and how to customize add_to_cart button for specific page.
I am a one person coder. Have no team. I prefer WordPress because it saves me time. If I have to build a huge website using Django It will take me ages not mention debugging the mess. Don't get me wrong. I love Python and Django but prefer WordPress for websites. I love the new Divi theme which uses drag and drop to design your website. Happy coding everyone.
Accessibility and security are the two more important reasons and both approaches come with issues. Hardcoding your own website depends 100% on you to learn how to avoid or, at least, mitigate problems with those, but 3rd parties, we never really know what's going on behind the scenes and we have little to no control over.
Great Video! The exact same reason you are hand coding your own website is the same reason I hand code clients. I know WordPress like the back of my hand but growth is the key, I'd hate to start over coding a website because WordPress couldn't handle it.

I would I just use something like WordPress for the portfolio site and not waste much time there and then link the actual coding projects? im still learning but im feeling pretty close to start making stuff. i just assumed WordPress is like cheating and won't show your coding abilities to an employer. im not in the industry so i wouldn't know. just something i assumed.

I've seen a lot of indie hackers use Wordpress to build their SASS website generating thousands, just depends on the level of complexity but if you can hand code everything within WP then maybe this comment is irrelevant toward the meaning of this video, lol. Hand Code + Wordpress.
WordPress burned me for the last time on a small simple self-hosted site. At least once a year, I run into a security issue and end up losing my self-hosted solution. Redesigning my personal self-hosted site in Django right now. Should have done it years ago. The hassle of always patching WP for a site that no-one should care about but me and a few blog readers, is too much hassle moving forward.
