I'm turkish from Trabzon sürmene and samsun. In my 20s I started to do some research about my heritage. My parents don’t know anything about our roots and our heritage. They have always been taught to not talk about greeks. They didn’t know that most of our culture from black sea region has greek origin. I've always felt a deep connection to greek culture before i researched about my origin. Many years ago i was invited to a greek wedding and when i heard the same sounds of the same music i immediately felt so much joy in my heart. This music always goes straight into my heart and makes me cry and boil my blood at the same time. By that time I didn't know anything about the history of pontos. I stood up and danced the “horon” with the greek guests. We knew we had the same culture and it made us happy. My DNA test told me I was 40% greek/south italian. And i feel it in my heart. Let's emphasize our commonalities instead of living apart with patriotism. Greetings to my brothers and sisters❤🇹🇷🇬🇷

From different sources and ran through google translate (I then made some small corrections). I skipped the parts about what happened there. "Alaçam was an area inhabited by a dense population of wealthy Greeks engaged in the tobacco trade, who during the period 1870-1900 had built about 100 houses." "Alaçam is the ancient Byzantine Leondoupolis, it is built at the foot of Mount Prophet Ilias. It is crossed by a river of the same name. It had two Churches, of Michael the Archangel and of Taxiarches and two Primary schools. A Boys' School and a Girls' School, each staffed by four teachers, supported by communal income (such as from estate rents and from student carols organized into groups with head schoolmasters and teachers). Its population amounted to six thousand. Today it has 13,000 inhabitants. Its production was and still is tobacco and cereals, the inhabitants are also engaged in animal husbandry. The province falls under the Prefecture of Sampsounta, Ecclesiastical Province of Amaseia with the Metropolitan seat of Sampsounta. The residents were engaged in trade, professions and agriculture, apart from the tobacconists there were also tobacco companies, such as Alliston, American Tobacco and the French Tobacco Monopoly, Rezi et al." "Alaçam, the Byzantine Leontopolis, the town of Pontus about 30 km west of Pafra. Its Greek inhabitants numbered 300 families in the middle of the 19th century and 1300 people in the early 20th century. The main economic activity was the cultivation of excellent tobacco, with the Greeks owning the most important part of their trade. The community maintained a boys' school with 40 pupils and a girls' school, with a total annual budget of 100 pounds. It was part of the sub-administration of Pafra and ecclesiastically belonged to the Metropolis of Amaseia." A few last names I ran into: Ιωαννίδης, Λαζαρίδης, Τεμίρογλου, Τσιμπιρής, Ουζούνογλου, Πετρίδης, Ξανθόπουλος, Γιανσακίδης, Παπαδόπουλος. I live in Izmir, I am of Armenian origin, my ancestors are Armenian. Most of my friends in Izmir are Greek immigrants, unfortunately they do not know their ancestors.
Are they cretan muslims by any chance? Many cretan greeks who were islamized went to Turkey, specifically in western Anatolia, and assimilated. Many also live in Izmir.
As stated in the Ottoman constitution, every Muslim and non-Muslim citizen who had ideal conditions in terms of age and health was obliged to do military service. When it was seen that the war was approaching, the recruitment of soldiers was accelerated. In this process, some Greek youth who did not want to join the army fled to Greece. Those who accepted to join the military, on the other hand, started banditry by escaping from the military with their uniforms and embezzled weapons after their military training was over. That's why when you look at the photos of the bandits, most of them have Turkish soldier uniforms and Turkish rifles. When the General Staff saw that non-Muslims were not reliable for military service, it decided to send them to labor battalions and engineering units.
Laughable and historically inaccurate. People were forced to walk many kilometres without food or rest and those who survived were sent to amele taburları where they were working non stop and resting only when sleeping.
@@megistanas You either didn't read what I wrote or your English is not good enough. If either is the problem, do that thing again. Then you will understand better what I wrote.
@@Okanasu I fully understood what you wrote and I have heard and read stories from people who were treated like what I'm saying. Everyone can sugarcoat these events to help Turkish propaganda. I'm not buying it.
@@megistanas I own this land. I read and listened to what happened. I am proving to you. Look at the photos of the Pontian bandits from that period. You will see most of them wearing Turkish military uniforms and holding a German Mauser (registered in the Turkish army). You think they bought that gun and uniform at the mall? No... they were deserters. Turkish military archives are full of documents talking about such deserters and their gangs. In the Black Sea and Central Anatolia, only the Orthodox of Turkish origin did not flee from the army. Even in the Turkish War of Independence (1919-22), they proved their loyalty to the state by fighting the invading Greek army and treacherous gangs.
The order of the events is slightly different . Greeks started escaping the army and forming guerrilla groups , after they noticed that their friends and family who had been joining the ottoman army , were being exterminated systematically , and they were never getting back to their villages. After the Balkan wars, when Rumeli , which was full of Christian minorities, was lost , the Turkish state started exterminating the Christians of Anatolia as they were considered a threat. No matter what you are taught in school , Christians of Anatolia were slaughtered for something which was not their fault (Balkan wars). This unprecedented genocide created the guerrillas my friend. Saying that the Christian minorities were treated as equals by ottoman state is a joke.
The name of the song is Παλληκάρια άσον Πόντον which is the Greek name of "Courageous Men from Pontus". The words Σα ρασσία are the first two words of the song.
My grandfather fought against Pontic Greek gangs in the Black Sea as a corporal during the War of Independence. Ataturk himself wrote a letter to my grandfather expressing his gratitude for capturing a well-known and troublesome gang in Samsun and its surroundings, and was awarded the Independence Medal at the end of the war. During his visit to the Çarşamba district of Samsun after the war, my grandfather and Atatürk came face to face and my grandfather and Atatürk took a photo together. In fact, the name of our village was changed during this visit. The explanation on Wikipedia is as follows; The old name of the village was "Yağmurlu"(The place where it rains) because it received a lot of rain. During the Republic period, the village was named "Yamanlı"(meaning Brave Strong, feared) because the most brave people were found in these areas
That's because the blood is the same. One continued being Christian and speaking Greek, one became Muslim but still speaks Greek. We love our Muslim brothers who still live in Pontus.

FROM GREECE . HELLO DENIZ . PONTOS FOR EVER
From different sources and ran through google translate (I then made some small corrections). I skipped the parts about what happened there.
"Alaçam was an area inhabited by a dense population of wealthy Greeks engaged in the tobacco trade, who during the period 1870-1900 had built about 100 houses."
"Alaçam is the ancient Byzantine Leondoupolis, it is built at the foot of Mount Prophet Ilias.
The residents were engaged in trade, professions and agriculture, apart from the tobacconists there were also tobacco companies, such as Alliston, American Tobacco and the French Tobacco Monopoly, Rezi et al."
"Alaçam, the Byzantine Leontopolis, the town of Pontus about 30 km west of Pafra. It was part of the sub-administration of Pafra and ecclesiastically belonged to the Metropolis of Amaseia."
A few last names I ran into: Ιωαννίδης, Λαζαρίδης, Τεμίρογλου, Τσιμπιρής, Ουζούνογλου, Πετρίδης, Ξανθόπουλος, Γιανσακίδης, Παπαδόπουλος.
From what I understand many Greek houses are still standing there, hope you find your family home
