    You CAN still bring the A/C back to life. My dad had an '84 since '85. A year or two before passing it onto me, he contacted the company that makes the refrigerant and was able to find out how to get through the red tape. He had to "become" a company and legally he was allowed to buy the refrigerant but was not allowed to sell it, meaning he could use it for personal use. After replacing a hose he charged it up and it still blows cold air. The 944's are just awesome to drive. Great video!

    I bought an 87 944s back in the early 90s and loved it, driving it for about 10 years as my daily driver in southern California. My car differed from the base 944 in that the head was a dual overhead cam with 4 valves per cylinder, a higher compression ratio and tuned intake/exhaust runners. As a result, the engine had a peaky torque curve that came on strong a little over 4K RPM and pulled hard up to the 6K redline. The only work that I had done to the car was to have a 5-angle valve seat job, polish up the intake and exhaust ports and mill the head to boost the CR up to about 11.25:1. The car would top-end at about 150 mph(verified) with an estimated crankshaft HP of about 200HP. When I had to have a clutch job done on the car I put in a lightened flywheel and lightweight pressure plate and also installed a short-shift kit.

    Interesting
    I also bought a pretty run down 1986 944 in garnet red when I was 17. Now I'm 20! Good video. Get's me excited to bring mine out for spring and do some maintenance.
    One question, I've been thinking about putting in an aftermarket central locking system (kind of like in the mighty car mods video) would you reckon this is possible on a 944?

    • @MotorMindsProductions
      @MotorMindsProductions  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      SupercarSTHLM Awesome to hear you have a 944, your story is very similar to mine! Does your car currently have a locking system with the key on the panel to the right of the driver door? If so I think it's possible. My car doesn't have that feature so I have to pick each door individually. Only problem is when I put on new door handle seals I screwed up the passenger door lock so now I can only lock it from the inside 😂

      @j.m.2987 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. I drive mine regularly, and it’s been pretty reliable so far. However, many small things will need replacement, espacially plastic parts since they will get porous eventually after 30 years. Other than that, it’s a great daily driver in my experience!

    Such a positive review bro! nice change from the usual jaded and spoiled youtubers who complain about everything ...they are so lucky to have the cars they have yet they dont appreciate them...Ive always been interested in the 944's but never owned one...drove the standard one and the 16valve 944S which was Very impressive in buttery smooth,high revving power, buckets of german road feel, sweet exhaust and beautiful handling...Great that you Appreciate ur car! I try to do same with my 28yr old probe gt.. had it since new and its been my Only car for all that time...

  • @BushmasterPatriot
    @BushmasterPatriot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Greetings from the Pocono Mountains! Nice 944!! 2 things among the many to know with this car. If your heat is stuck on and/or not blowing cold, theres a flap by the gas pedal that switches to allow hot or cold air. when the crappy plastic piece breaks on the end of the metal rod, the flap falls and its stuck on hot. check that. Also, if your odometer works then thats awesome!! Theres a button reset for the tripometer in the vent. When the car is in motion never press it because that will break the little gear and break the odometer. yes it can be fixed but if you cant resist just make sure the car is stopped. wish i never touched mine. oops Ask me how i learned these things. Enjoy yours dude!! Im hoping to get mine back on the road in a few weeks.

    • @MotorMindsProductions
      @MotorMindsProductions  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BushmasterPatriot Thanks man! I actually broke the odometer the day I bought the car by doing what you described 😂 As for the A/C, I think it just has a leak because it blows lukewarm. Glad you enjoyed the video and best of luck getting yours on the road!

    The engine in the original 924 had only 95hp in the United States, and it was actually an Audi engine, it may have been used in a vw van but it was not a vw engine. Just a slight correction. Your car looks fantastic! The review was well put together and enjoyable to watch. I concur with many of your sentiments of the driving experience, these are great fun to drive.

    Have an '87 and an '84 944. Absolutely love both of them. Named them Taylor and Natalie. I absolutely love the interior differences. My 84 actually has the nicer interior. Bought the 87 for 2500$ and the 84 for 7000$. The 84 was maintained flawlessly and looks and drives like new. It's my current daily. She has less than 60K miles. The 87 needed a new steering rack, control arm bushings, AC compressor, a bumper pad, and a windshield, and that baby drove me 80K miles until the odometer died over 200K. The water pump and timing belt need changing now but she still fires up. I'm holding off to maybe LS swap here soon. Anyway, love these cars to death, they will not be my last ones.

    Dude you're not an idiot for buying it. Listening to you talk about it I figured you were atleast in your mid 20s, you have an opinion of it that I wouldn't have seen at your age. I'm subbed now, I'll follow any 944 content you upload. I would love to see all sorts of mods, but don't ruin your baby, only do it if it's something you truly want done. I did the bumper tuck by drilling out the shocks on the bumpers, drastically changed the look, but I also deleted the rubber pads and emblems, and that might not be for you if you like those rubber pieces. I want to try making a new hatch, just for fun. Something along the lines of the strosek, but more modern. Or possibly an extremely short bed hatch truck conversion, but doubtful on that. I have an 96 NA, and an 87 turbo. The 944 is such a fun car to drive, speed means nothing when you're snow drifting and you can put the car anywhere you want.

    i had 944 II, 944 Turbo S and 968CS and i loved them all. 944 II got new wheels because i did not like the "telephone disk" style orig wheels. 16inch orig 911 wheel made it look much better. Also the 944 Turbo front nose was looking better...best however was my black 968CS, the engine was just amazing, 240HP with only 1350kg weight, what fun to drive....

    I have an 84 944, Guards red with a beige interior. I also love this dark red color, I guess I will have to get me another one some time. I disagree on the interior though, I like the original one much better. The 85.5 interior is okay as well and indeed much more 90s, but that just the thing: I like the 80s vibe of the old one.

    • @MotorMindsProductions
      @MotorMindsProductions  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Darryl Edwards I would absolutely reccomend this car if you know what you're in for. Maintenance can be a total P.I.T.A. If you do buy one, check and see when the timing belt and balance shaft belt have been replaced, they need to be done every 4 years/45k miles and will run you around $1500-$2000 to replace unless you do it yourself or know a guy. If you're handy, replacing a lot of maintenance items and updating some stuff is a lot of fun and a awesome way to learn more about the car you drive! I love my car because of that, it's been a great learning experience. I'd say stuff you'd want to fix up before driving it a lot are the spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, coolant lines, all belts, all filters, and the fuel lines that run over the exhaust manifold to the fuel rail. Best of luck!

    Great vid. Man if the 944 had a little more horsepower, like 200 or so, I would definitely consider buying one. I just think if I bought one for like 8 or 9 grand, things will just go wrong and I would have to put like 5 more grand into it, plus it being pretty slow... idk. I think ill just look for a base 986 boxster to fulfill my Porsche crave :)
    I really wish Porsche would have kept making 944 into the late 90s while consistently improving them.

      REALIN while an S2 definitely commands a price premium over the other NA cars, rising values will probably lead to a return on your investment! Either way they're fun cars, just depends on how much you value straightline speed. I believe the S2 cuts a second or two off the 0-60 of the other NA models like mine.

    What you say about the interior (or actually only the dash and steering wheel really changed) - you might as well say that it changed from looking like a race car (Ferrari/Lambo) to just an ordinary passenger car...

    Look at the s2. They're twice the price of a regular na but half that of a turbo and worth the extra dollars for the power over an na but reliability and delivery over the turbo. Turbo models are the queen of lag

    My dad had a brand new 87 944turbo. He had the bigger k27 turbo and a chip put in. The thing just flew when you hit 4k rpm. Nothing like that laggy 80s turbo when it starts to pull. He had a 944 non turbo before for 2 weeks then traded it in for the turbo. Im sorry i disagree with u. The turbo front end looks worlds better then the the na 944. I hate that rubber safety bumper on the front looks hideous and i always read that in the forums that most people find it so ugly. Bring up a pic side by side to compare with both turbo and non. Also driving both back to back the turbo was so much more bloody fun and not just in a straight line like you say but coming out of corners and letting it rip. Braking was better the koni shocks much better and by 88 with the turbo s having even the lsd added tgat turbo was awesome. I will say though you got a nice looking car there and I can see how enthused you are about it and thats awesome its just for me once u drive both they were almost like two completely different cars and only the turbo will do for me now. Presently looking for one . Hoping for an 89 that came with all the goodies. Cheers

    • @MotorMindsProductions
      @MotorMindsProductions  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah there is no denying the Turbo is a much faster car, but my car is completely changed since I made this video! New wheels, tires, koni suspension all around, and about 10million other things have made my NA an absolute riot to drive! I still don't like the turbo front end, doesn't have the classic look of the NA cars in my opinion and I personally love the rubber bumpers! Either way, you can't go wrong with any 944 they are just so much damn fun! Should have another update video coming soon.

    I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE SOME CORRECTIONS TO THIS NARRATORS MISSTATEMENTS . FIRST THE ORIGINAL 924 WAS INTRODUCED IN NOV OF 75 AS A 76 MODLE.BUT NON REACHT THE US UNTIL THE 77 MODEL YEAR. MOSTLY TO SO CALIFORNIA .THE ENGINE WAS A HYBRID NOT BY VW, BUT THE SHORT BLOCK WAS MADE BY AUDI AND THE HEAD WAS A PORSCHE DESIGNED SLANT 4 . THE FUEL INJECTION WAS GERMAN BOSCH. THE FIRST ITERATION HAD 95HP AND WAS SUCH A TERRIBLE PERFORMER THAT PORSCHE WHO OWNED THE DESIGN NOT VW HAD TO RUSH OUT A NEW VERSIONS.WHICH HIT THE SO CAL MARKET IN JUNE OF 77 AND THE HP WAS RAISED TO 110 HP. IT STILL WASN'T GOOD BUT DID HELP AS THE SO CAL TUNERS DID THEIR THING. IN 1978 THEY BUMPED THE COMPRESSION RATIO AND HELPED BALANCE THE ROUGH AND NOISY ENGINE. AND AS FOR THOSE RUBBER TIP BUMPERS THEY WERE NOT LIKED AND WERE HATED. .THERE WERE SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THE 924 S IN S0 THE SUB ATE UP THE VINYL DASH AND SEATS.AND GETTING PARTS WAS A NIGHT MARE MY 77.5 WAS IN THE SHOP FOR 3 MO WAITING PARTS. TH ENGINES RAN SO ROUGH THAT THE MANIFOLDS WOULD SHAKE LOSS. AND KIDS WOULD STEAL THE PLASTIC CENTER CAPS ON THE WHEELS THAT SAID PORSCHE FOR THEIR BIKES AND THE COST $125.00 EACH. AND THE 914 WAS ALSO ANOTHER PROBLEM IN SO CAL.
